Today I installed a gearshift linkage repair kit as detailed in this thread:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33100.0
Only problem I had was all those piddly little clips on the link bars snapping. 2 return trips to GSF sorted it though.
Although next time I'm gonna take the cylinder head off to do it. Then I'll be able to reach it without wishing I had an extra elbow on each f***ing arm!

modified air box even further.
Turned the holes into cut out sections, and also rather than direct the cold air intake to the original intake, I made another cut out for it, so now its got the original intake hole (without the trumpet) and its also got the cold air intake above it. Sounds much louder and throttle seems a bit more responsive.

thought this would be a good thread, basically what have you done to your golf today!?
ill start:
changed my thermostat as it was leaking (quite a common problem) and managed to get the bit from a scrappy for £10 bargain!
your turn.....
looked out the window after an hour of getting home and saw that both front windows on the car were right down and it was raining..... confused, as i definately didn't have them down when i parked up, so guessing it's goin to have to be a door card off and check all the wiring(possible switch aint workin right so will need to check that too). plus now the window doesn't go all the way up unless you stop it before it hits the top or it comes right back down again.....
keeping an eye on fan belt as its sounding a bit 'scratchy' down there :undecided:
made sure all drain holes in the sills were clear and had a good look underneath for any other problems, cleaned around inner cv trying to track down a possible gearbox leak, changed top radiator hose and bled system
mk1s need constant watching, soon as you turn your back summat will break or fall off

Cool good luck, meant to say reinforce with breeze blocks or the like, best to take a belt and braces approach as a golf in the face can ruin your day.been trying to put golf on some ramps, but with no luck (she's too low) need to try again tomorrow

Yeah, you may laugh, but when you've got an alarm going off and the doors are locked, and a simple "disarm" button doesn't do the job, you wonder what to do.
In the end I sat completely still, and then disarmed it. I think a good read of the manual would be a good idea.
And on that note, must ring the insurers to let them know I have a Cat 2 alarm with certificate.
Driven it and not broken down.........
Scrapped one!
Still not broken down

looked at them after you went offline this afternoon Rhyso, look nice and still dirty
Rhys does 4 miles a day commute to work so doesn't warrant a diesel. might use a bit more when going on holiday or to shows but will be more fun driving there and the mk5 170 is the same price as a private sale ED30. no brainer in my eyes. If I wasnt doing 30k+ a year I wouldnt be driving a diesel
And then booked a test drive for a MK5 GT TDI 170 for Saturday morning........ :undecided:

Is the 140 not a better bet than a 170 from what I have read.
Is the 140 not a better bet than a 170 from what I have read.
Yeah I've read that and dont get it. How can more power be worse? Im not quite understanding it. Plus you get a nice twin exhaust (like the GTI) with the 170.

Your just kidding yourself. Me and Nick and have both been there, you will see the light in its full brightness, its just a matter of time :D
But that still makes it a diesel . . . ?
Yesterday I used it to go looking for its replacement
Today I wasted 3.5 miles worth of fuel going to the local garage to check my tyre pressures ready for tomorrow to find the machine was out of order
I think we must have been washing at the same time  bloody rain  Only reason i washed it was i could not go to the detailing open day with a car with 2 weeks of dirt on it, just seemed wrong :undecided: :grin:good work  yep rains been a pain today the gf told me to go and get my grille fitted instead of going out this afternoon  got the old one off and set about re-adjusting the bonnet catch decided i would polish the opening where the old one had been and just got the polish on and yep it poured down  had to wait for it to stop and get out eventually and got my new carbon grille fitted  :afro:
I also fixed two rattles, one from the dash which was the fuse cover clips rattling off the heater pipe and the other was the rear seat catch. Now to try and fix the others!
Polished it, dried it, waxed it, dried it, dried it, dried it, dried it, dried it, dried it, dried it, dried it.

Decided not to sell the vr and just turbo it over the winter :)
Left it parked in a field all day.......................again

Hey everyone,
I bought a W reg 1.8t golf at long last, (I've always wanted one) knowing that the oil pressure light keeps coming on, this wasn't much of a worry as it's a common thing?
Anyway, down to the point, I drove the car 60miles home and the water temp guage appeared to be reading correctly, (just under 90) but I went out in the car the day after and it overheated....
I managed to get the car home by releasing pressure from the expansion tank every few miles.
The top radiator hose gets hot and the fans kick in when they should, the ?bottom? rad hose (the one to the thermostat housing) stays cool, if I continuously squeeze/pump the hose it starts to warm, there is no flow of water in the tank with the engine running, would I be right in thinking that the water pump has failed?
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Alex

How to you "half fit" a gear knob? it screws on.
Half fitted Polo GTi gear knob this morning,
How to you "half fit" a gear knob? it screws on.
It doesn't screw on mate, its fitted on a collar with a pressed steel clamp over it, that I've got to somehow wrench or cut off. I released all the trim and transferred the mounting plate to the Polo one ready to remove the old one from the lever stick. It'll be re-fitted with a small jubilee clip over the collar.
Bought some shiney round things... Thanks Dubster2!

Has anyone ever made up a white vinyl sticker of the cup holder logo?
So easy to do, just a little bit of effort required  I was wondering about the cup holder logo aswell! Would be very tough to do I'd imagine, perhaps something you would have to design on a computer and then get one of those CAD machines to cut it out...I'd pay for one if anyone could it!
Mended my alternator pulley in an A-team stylee
I have a contact on model car forum he makes all kinds of small decals from vinyl, will be cheap! I can make enquiries if you like?

:sad:Hmmmm had a diagnostic test carried out, only to be told car was 100% alligned, although I had to replace to date, 4 rear tyres on drivers in the last 14 months. Still do not know why the tyre(s) have all worn on the inside and why the garage where orginal repairs to accident will not take any responsiblty. Only found out about last tyre as I had to have a water pump fitted and garage picked up on another tyre worn, same place as the previous 3. Any suggestions

I got a brand new kit for 900 and fitted myself as I'm in the trade and fit LPG weekly it is easy to do but you can pick up the kits of eBay for like 100 all in and if you feel you can do it then do it I know most LPG fitters will finish a job if you get stuck mate so give it a go and if you get stuck take it to your local

Unlikely to be pet cats, unless your neighbours have panthers. More likely to be foxes, I have had fox paw prints and scratches on mine in the past.
Walked past it a couple of times and stared in awe at how clean it is after my 250mile journey on Sunday! Oh what a fresh layer of wax does to your car...and my smile

Instead waxoyled brake pipes and re-undersealed sills in preparation for mot end of month!! Then discovered Golf Gti Forum.

Your right brake is either working 21% more or less than your left..
How bad is that? Would that cause swerving under heavy braking right?

I had that done to my old car.. but i actually watched the little fecker do it so i gave chase caught him and roughed him up a little bit :lipsrsealed:
What did i do today? Came within 3" of being a victim of a 'crash for cash' scam. A38 in Birmingham on the Kingsbury island, 5:20pm. Saw an old grey Vauxhall Zafera swerve from lane 3 into the path of a old Nissan Primera in front of me before driving off at speed. The Primera driver looked at me in his mirror whilst jamming on his brakes to a complete stop (no brake lights). Luckily I stopped well in time (god bless the GTD ) - his response? Slammed the car into reverse and came back at me! I took avoiding action and he missed me by inches. The car - full of Eastern Europeans (just an observation) shot off round the roundabout and back the way we had come at Mach 3.
http://jjizzle.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/393199_10150390820664249_101228694248_8275774_15343550_n.jpgnto a carpark next to the scene to change my pants; 5 minutes later and what do I see? The grey Zafera do the exact same thing to the same Primera! They missed their new target again, by luck rather than judgement. My temperament went from trying to calmly collect what was left of my insides from the back seat to wanting to catch, abduct, torture and disembowel the lot of them with a rusty spoon. I felt sick with rage.
Be warned guys and girls. They are out there…
Detritus.

For some reason there doesn't seem to be enough tolerance between the ABS ring and sensors. I took it for a longish drive last night and it appears to have bedded in a bit and the rubbing noise is starting to go.

Taxed! About time the Govt did Tax exemption for cars over 20 yrs old, of which there are now very few left after the scrappage scheme. Or exemption for cars doing a minimum mileage.... Its not fair that someone can go and buy a brand new car, and pay zero duty! yet still rack up huge mileage
Thom
chuff'd it
Finally found out what was causing the squeeking noise I had been having from the front drivers side wheel. It has had new cv joint, new discs and pads, and endless amounts of time trying to find the source of the noise. Today I removed the pads, discs calipers and carriers. Then whilst turning the hub noticed the backing plate was ever so slightly bent and was catching on one small side. Straightened this out and put everything back together and now I can open the window without the noise doing my head in. This car has been into three garages trying to find this problem and finally it is ME that has sorted it
cleaned the windows inside out, got wife to vac the car, cleaned dash, then got some MER's and sorted the arches and spoiler (pretty crap and very watery, il stick with autoglym)didnt get round to the windows, they need doing mind. next weekend maybe

Tried to get the hub off to remove the bolt that was stuck in it after the ball joint bolt snapped, couldn't get the hub nut to undo so took the driveshaft off the gearbox and took it to a garage who struggled to undo it, then they hammered the driveshaft out and f**ked the thread, so now I need to replace it.This is a common problem, the recommended way to do it is with an impact gun, i also did it the hard way and will be buying an impact gun asap. :embarassed:
Tried to get the front suspension off, but can't get the top nut to undo, just keeps turning the strut, even put mole grips on the strut and a hex bit in the top but just broke the hex bit and the mole grips can't grip it tight enough, they just slip.
Getting pissed off with this thing now, everything I try to do is 10x harder than any other car I have ever worked on, wish I had never bothered with it now!

Good job there mate. Badge in post to u
well I started to attack some rust patches on the doors... so far they are de-rusted and have a small amount of primer on them, just need to think about how to paint them properly! (pay someone and get them done right first time or have a go myself?)The bottoms of the doors are easy to paint yourself as you have a nice big bit of trim to work up to, i did the nearside door bottom and lower quarter last spring and it still polishes up nice.

U281 readers are handy little things to keep in the boot, albeit very basic. I've had one for about 8yrs and has helped me out loads when i need to quickly diagnose a problem whilst on the road.I figured for the tenner or so they cost, it's better to have one than not :)
If you mean suspension then yes, the stock set up is sh!t straight out of the factory let alone once worn in.That would explain the mildly-scary cornering then :D
No that would be the missing rubber bits in the rear beam :grin:If you mean suspension then yes, the stock set up is sh!t straight out of the factory let alone once worn in.That would explain the mildly-scary cornering then :D
