Title: Drew's 8v RED ride....new car!
Post by: DrewGTI on 10 March 2009, 23:58
hello. . .  just thougth i'd give a little story behind my car and how i came about to owning it and anything i've done or have planned for it really. prob not as much as the other dub rides but would like to my own little thread.

Well. .  as far as it goes it was stuck in someones garage rotting away as the guy who owned it ran it out off MOT and tax and just left it to die. i could of took it off him for £500 but didin't feel i had the time to clen her up etc. . .  but my boss did!

So he brought the car for £500 (no pics of what state she was in, sorry) and went about getting her up to standard with refurd alloys, brand new headlights, full service, oil change, new ht leads, dizzy, rotor arm, side skirts, small dent removed out of drivers door. inside and out valated, MOT and taxed and she was ready to roll!

This to my boss was a project as back in the day he had one almost brand new and set him back almost £8k!

this was until he let me borrow it one night and i fell in love with it. . not so much the speed as it is nippy but driven and been in alot faster car but just seemed great to drive then checking out the net and reading on here loved the whole VW thing. . . so took the car off him for a grand as thats what it stood him at and would off stood me at if i got the car in the first place!

since then not really done much to it really. . . . couple simple things and things that needed to be done. simple things like i got some pressed plates made up and changed my dash to LED blue, also changed all the badges for brand new ones from VW, GTI grille badge, boot lid badge, rear golf GTI badge, side skirt GTI badges. Had stereo with usb and aux connection fitted, and parts of dash sorted out.

Things that needed to be done was middle box that i had sorted and back box postioned right... then ABS sorted and coolant flush. sensor changed and also a fan control switch. Heat shield around back box has been a pain and a constant rattle but fixed today!

Your down to 100mm? How is the ride? Any problems?

Anyone know what size of the stickers in the centre caps? 55mm?

had to raise it a little recently as i had to take it a little offroad but its now around 80mm lowerd, had no problems with it being v.low other than scraping the splitter a bit.. :undecided:

I was thinking around 40mm. . .was looking at the jamex kit as seems quite cheap!! read some thoughts on here and seems 50/50 so not sure what to go for?

don't want the ride to harsh and as my back box aint standard to pipe to the middle box already knocks on the axel when carring peeps in the back,  :undecided:

Post by: Adam on 11 March 2009, 01:21
I will prob stick it to 40mm then go lower when I get more bits like ARB,  adjustable drop links and such.

Hot Tunning on here are good at the price. I will take some pictures of me doing it. Show you what it looks like (As our cars are the same)

I don't believe you :P haha! Me and my friend went from Yeovil to Weymouth just for a KFC, when we got there, we shared a family bucket meal, just the two of us hahahahaha!

BTW, I expect to see this slammed some point soon, don't leave it a year like I did.

You obviously know the good and bad of what people say about the coilovers, I can't fault them, more than happy with them myself. And you can drop it as much or as little as you want :) on a budget too.

I couldn't honestly tell you that man lol! Front end is 3 inches off the ground. I'd imagine 80mm drop on the front and 70/65 on the rear? Might be 5mm give or take on both haha! I seriously love them, bouncy at time but solid ride, not uncomfortable once you are in the car for a few days. Make the car look sooooooo much better :)

Black would set it off a treat off the white paintwork, but gunmetal grey would match really well, (like what BB has got yeah?).

yeah.. i thought against the white would look awesome!!

like these maybe as black seems to be what most people do with right cars?

If you wanna keep the standard GTI ones then do so, don't think there's anything wrong with them myself but I would change them if it were my car. Knowing me I'd got for the Anni split rims lol!

Fitted the 40mm kit today

Car looks loads better for it, sorry it isn't a better picture. As soon as I finished it, I went out for a quick drive to see what it was like and I have to say that the ride is very similar to standard exept there is a lot less body roll when you get to the corners

Any way, here's a pic.

I will get some better shots when I'm next out in it (had a couple of celebratory beers so the car is going nowhere for the rest of the day).

Ha!! nice try mate

There is a guy on here sellimg some off his Mk4 though, think he's wanting around £300 for 'em. They're BSA livewires, got them for £400 delivered with tyres off the bay

Seen a few Mk3's up here but being quite new to the whole dub scene I know none of them  :embarassed: I do get a few nods though when passing. Seen a dragon green one in Buxton that is really low and a white 'L' plate with big gold wheels on.

I spoke to a friend of a friend the other day and the guy runs a website for a group of guys who are into their dubs etc. (Peak vag). They sometimes have a meet on a Thursday night at the Fallow Deer on the A6 just outside of Chapel-en-le-frith that I might have a run over to meet a few like minded people (most of my mates love the old fords)

8v8v . .looking good mate. . how much more you going at the rear?

Love the wheels Andy. . think black and the right design would look awesome!  more so with the white.

was looking for some Anni ones then to get sprayed up black. will have to see. you going to any shows this year? could convoy down.
Title: Re: Drew's 8v white ride
Post by: Andy-H on 18 April 2009, 08:01
Gonna try to mate. That would be

Just can't commit to anything at the moment cos I'm off to China in a couple of weeks on business and I'll have to make at least 4 more trips this year but not sure when

The anni wheels would look  Mate, just finding some at the right money though. The only reason I didn't go for them is that they are a bit high maintenance trying to keep the corrosion at bay. The GF has some on her Polo GTI and they're a real mess (guess who's job that's going to be to refurb  )

The one show I'll definitely be going to is the Tatton park show in cheshire......really enjoyed it there last year and there were some great cars (which made me spend loads of money on mine  )

Are you just looking for a BBS wheel then or are you just looking at all wheel types at the mo??

Title: Re: Drew's 8v white ride
Post by: DrewGTI on 19 April 2009, 22:48
yeah. . i'd only be going if the weather was right on the day anyway really.

Yeah. . BBS really as love the Anni wheels but not too sure, would just be what i thought looks best. would have to be black tho i think. just keeping my eye out at the mo. not sure if to commint to any mods just yet as playing with the idea of a mk2. was thinking a mk3 vr6 as its only a little more on the insurance but with the extra costs on parts and fuel gonna give it a miss.

do love the mk2's tho....
Title: Re: Drew's 8v white ride
Post by: Andy-H on 20 April 2009, 10:36
I agree with you on the Mk2 mate

Just finding one that's good and doesn't cost the earth is the problem.

There is an Oak green 3 door round here with a cage in it that looks mint.

My sister has a VR6 that she is having to sell because she has found out that she's pregnant......think she wants around £1500 for it.

I have some 15" VR6 BBS wheels that I use for winter that do look well when they're on. Could do you a deal for your long beach if you wanted a change

Title: Re: Drew's 8v white ride
Post by: DrewGTI on 22 April 2009, 18:46
yeah. . costing the earth is the problem if you want a mint one. was thinking of getting one that needs some work doing but then you will still end up with a mint one costing the earth!  but i guess the money goes over time and have fun working on it.

will have to see. . . would love to keep mine and get a white mk2.

got any pics of your VR6 BBS wheels mate?

Yeh, get the two on your drive Mate

I keep looking round at different motors myself, keeping with a dub but unsure what to do  :undecided: caddy??  :undecided:

This is a pic of mine the day I picked it up and brought it home,

It's the best shot that I have to hand at the mo.

one wheel has a little kurbing on it (not done by myself I might add ) but not bad and they have a few chips and scratches in the paint......ideal for a refurb to get them like the ones in the previous pic you posted

forgot to say . .your windows tinted? how much?
Title: Re: Drew's 8v white ride
Post by: Andy-H on 24 April 2009, 07:55
Hi Mate,

Yes, they are tinted. A mate has his own vinyl graphics business (bikes, rally cars etc.) and he wanted to get into the tinting business so he used my car and some others to practice on

Like I say though, he was practicing so it ain't the best job in the world but it only cost me £30 for the tint

He has been on a course now and is much better at it..........not sure on the price though now  :undecided:

I must say though that it does have it's advantages. When your car's out in the sun all day it doesn't feel like it's gas mark 5 in there when you get in and also when you are in traffic at night you don't get any glare from the cars behind

Anyway, the guy who did my tints works in Bakewell so if you are interested, I'll give you his number and you can call in and have a chat about some tints when you are on your way up to see the missus

aiming for dropped a little, black alloys, and slighty tinted windows. have smoked rear lights and going to sort smoked side repeaters tomorrow. . not sure about headlights tho.

i used a little bit of silacone to seal them back up as i had it lying around but tbh it would have been fine to reheat the silacone that was already there.. is a simple yet effective mod for those that like the standard headlight shape.

Absolutely fine ride, Wayne is just a man who likes comfort. If you don't care about a bounce here and there, and slamming hard on occasions then get them, also, if you got a gf who isn't wearing a bra in the car because she was in her jymjams, great fun watching them...ahem...bounce lol!

Seriously though, great for the money, if I get another MK3 after this, I'll be getting those straight away.
Title: Re: Drew's 8v white ride
Post by: Wayne on 27 April 2009, 16:08
I had other issues as well as comfort, the car was never level and no amount of measuring got it right, they were noisy when cold from the springs.

The ride was shocking, I have lowered many cars and yes the ride suffers but it was just stupid.

But having said all the above if your looking for a cheap set of coilovers then go for it but I would save a bit more and go for a complete spring / shock kit.

**Bouncy bouncy**

Drew, I really can't fault them, I do see where Wayne is coming from but he mentions of things I've not had with mine, for example the squeaking when cold, mine don't make a sound ever, not even on frosty morning back in Jan/Feb.

shep agrees, as does Adam, as do I. The majority of this forum have them, and let's face it, you don't want to pay stupid money for a set of coilovers for a car that is worth on average less than 1K surely. Keep it cheap, but you get a good deal on this one.

- Tire trim dressing, so the tires looks blacker and not a grey colour :)

how about buying it back from the insurers once your claim has gone through if you think it's repairable and unworthy of scrapping. You'll probably get it back for next to nothing and you'll have your insurance money to spend on it.

there's still a lot about that are good! also parts are really easy to get and dirt cheap most of the time only a few select things that are a tad expensive

Hey wayne. . you should see it in person as the pictures don't do it credit. . . inside and out is just amazing!

gonna keep it as it is and not touch a single thing!! be a shame to change such a perfect conditon standard mk3!

will get some much better pictures Sunday and if the weather stays nice.

price i payed will be very hard to believe even more so when you look around the net at what prices some people are asking for mk3's.

I got a pay out for £1200 for my white one and picked up this little minter for £1500

Shame about the wheels Mate, they looked well

Go for the 40mm mate,

Works for mine and still comfy enough, it made mine look as though it actually has an engine in it

My kid brother has just bought a similar car to mine with standard suspension and side by side it looks so much higher

i kinda like the mud flaps. . . agree with the drop tho.

got three things i need to sort. no buzzer if i leave lights on, changed whole unit over but nothing so swapped it back. head unit wont come on and off with ignition and passenger wing mirror only goes up and down but not side to side. you can hear the motor working but mirror wont move side to side, is it possible something just needs to be re attached?

My 1996 never had a lights on warning buzzer, if it did then it was not working, head unit, pull it out and swap red and yellow leads over, mirror could be the clip broke that hold the glass to the motor so may need a new glass.

wires from head unit i changed over when i first popped it in and nothing. . still wont work with ignition. . .

and wing mirror i've tried to get into to see if its a quick fix or a easy swap and it just sounds like i'm gonna snap something. . how do i get into them?

If those could be bought for, say £250 then I'd be tempted but then you have the price of the adaptors to suit your car which I'm sure are not cheap . All depends on your budget Mate.

However, seeing as it cost him £250 for his refurb then he's going to want a lot more

Title: Re: Drew's 8v white ride
Post by: DrewGTI on 09 April 2010, 22:43
well.... after much thought and if it would look good etc etc i went with a vento front end! a lot of people will hate and alot of people will love! really thought i was gonna regret it up until i picked her up today and love it! really got her how i wanted her and hope pictures do it justice!? you need to see it in the flesh tho as it looks awesome and the paint work is out of this world!!

started off as a mint standard 55k mk3 golf.... and thats ho i was gonna keep her until that is i started going to shows etc..! started off with just few simple things, black badges and fog lights. then managed to get hold of genuine anni smoked fogs, blanks and indicators. after that came FK coilovers with a 45mm drop all round, soooo much better!

After getting the camber sorted it was wheel search! man what a pain and after picking D90's it was two trips to Manchester, the TNT from Manchester, a trip to Nottingham and 2 VR6 splitters later i had a set of D90's sat in front of me! lots of phone calls later i was told refurb £55 + vat a wheel! but could increase!  so a mate of a mate said he could do it £30 a wheel job done! mint, i'll go for that.......

two months later and still not a great job i get them back and fitted to car with £185 spacers £100 centre caps and £252 195 45 r16 tyres for a tiny bit of stretch....

then the vento front end. . early spec grill redone in black. . meatal strip redone in flash red, dark blue bonnet with a few nasty dings redone in flash red! plus brand new headlights!! also scuff tanken out of front bumper. . perfect now!

enjoy!

I think they look better without arches but they suit your car.

Lose the mudflaps.
Title: Re: Drew's 8v RED ride....Recaro baby!
Post by: Shady Pioneer on 31 May 2010, 21:17
Keep the arches Drew, the black helps break up the red on MK3s, if you look at the red VRs I find they have too much red if that makes sense?

By the way, I love your MK3. :afro:
Title: Re: Drew's 8v RED ride....Recaro baby!
Post by: Mikester on 31 May 2010, 21:18
I think they look smoother and better without the arches and flaps.

BUT BUT BUT

This car looks so good with them, and DIFFERENT i think it would be a shame to remove them.

Sometimes you have to know when to stop when something is good.

mud flaps = going

arches = staying

i know what you mean shady about being too red!!
and Mike i know what you mean about stopping when something is good and taking it a step too far and over doing it!

The only thing I would do bar removing the mudflaps is the BMW rear wiper mod? Make it look smoother on the rear but retain a wiper (like mine?).

but mine might not be too bad as low miles and well looked after. arches to stay tho.

But less practical in the UK. I'd be cursing like when my rear wiper stopped working

This is a stunning looking car Drew. I don't really post on forums (just lurk) but I have to give you props for this.

I aint gonna say "You should do this" or "You should do that" as it looks good and perfectly balanced in every guise you have had it.

Personally I like it best with the white lights though, it looks more defined. Would love to see it with the flagless plate and the white lights.

It really is a beautiful looking car though mate

your know help!

interior is just a retrim so prob least important as they do look nice as they are being recaro.

decided not to get anymore spacers (inless i get 30mm adapters) and go for 8j rear alloys! alloys do need a proper A1 refurb so would make sense doing it that way. lower it a bit more and roll the arches.

Engine wise a 20vt

20vt is the only way to go for a mk3! I don't really see the point in going to the effort of throwing in a 16v or a vr6 when you could just go out and buy one already done!

That the NCP one opposite the Black House Grill restaurant?

If so I parked in there last time I was there, me + 4 others in the car with boot full of luggage. Even with standard suspension the car was fairly low and it was a bit of a b!tch getting out of the exit! Can't imagine what it would be like in something properly low

Chester is at it's worst when the races are on; rich, sleazy, 'playboys' flashing their cash while fighting with each other and making generally making tits out of themselves.....that's the only bit about the city I don't miss

Loving the White Mk2 (i am biased though ) and on a K reg too, can't be many reg'd that late.

Love the state of the engine bay, it's where i want to get my 8v and the white wheels look spot on.

Was thinking of painting some G60 steels white for mine.

Good luck with the sale, looks great in the ad. Although the text in it is annoying, like 3 words per line and a million lines, what's with that?
