Mk1 Golf Cab Leak
« on: 12 January 2013, 11:50 »
Hiya,

My car was leaking really bad a few months ago so we replaced the seals and had the roof refitted by a specialist as the roof is only one year old, the guy i took it to said he was certain it would stop the leak as the roof was fitted badly before and the roof had started to lift up at the front. This solved about 95% of the leak but it still leaks from the roof handles even though the seals have been replaced. Has anyone else got any suggestions? Starting to drive me crazy now!

Thank you
Natalie

i use some vasaline  and rub it along the seals where the seal meets the roof, put enough on to create a seal and pay particular attention to the front part of the seal where the top of the quarter glass meets the roof

Foam gasket seals at the front may need changing if they were not done at the time of the roof change.
Usual suspect is that the silicone wasn't re applied during the work.

You need silicone sealant under the front first screw hole on the side rubbers. Plus before you put the rubber seal back into the retainer further silicone around the screw holes etc.

Secondly the front header seal. Run a strip of masking tape where it meets the paint on the windscreen frame.
Put the nozzle in the edge of the seal where it meets the A pillar and apply, moving in by 6-7 inches.
Finally you may need to adjust the J hooks that pull the roof frame against the header seal.
