Mileage Blocker - I didn't know it was a 'thing'
« on: 23 January 2025, 15:28 »
Watched this MK8 today with 500hp at the Ring

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zXltC6ghhQ

Then looked at the first comment, and quickly went back to watch the video.

Time check if it helps
2:50 sec
9:48 sec

track is approx 20.8km or 13miles.

Clearly I'm a bit naive, as I never would have thought it was still possible/desirable anymore.

yeah its mad, I just searched and a company will come and fit it too!

Apparently (according to pistonheads) people use it for lease cars that are on low mileage deals.

crazy, i feel like i have been living under a rock

I thought clocking went out with the Ark, long gone of the days of swapping speedos or getting the electric drill out.

I believe the mileage is stored in several locations or modules in the car. The ECU, gearbox, body control module maybe. Whether a mileage blocker covers all these who knows, but probably not. A dealer I’m sure can tell with their diagnostics. I also think consumer tools like Carly can identify this. Not really fair for future owners either.

How is it legal to have an inaccurate reading on the MOT cert for the mileage, if you were complicit in the knowledge of that mileage inaccuracy?

I think one company (first hit on google) claims to be 100% intraceable. Madness

Very common, most common use is on lease vehicles - lease for 5k miles a year for cheap and drive the sh1t out of it.

If anyone cares to actually look, the ECU has a recorded "running time" counter. Which won't be blocked. See if that makes any sense vs the mileage display.

I mean the owner COULD have just loved running the engine on his/her drive and burning petrol but....

Biggest problem of course with having a car that reports 20k miles in 3 years but actually has 100k is that its probably not had the correct servicing...
