I saw my first 8.5 on the roads today. A blue dealer demo car. It didn’t have the cool looking rear lights like the Dogman12 photo, just all red non IQ lights by the look of them.
Are the darkened ones standard IQ or darkened ‘black pack’ option items?

The front lights on the 8.5 looked very different to mk8 headlamps and the front bumper looked nice.
Looking forward to seeing the more sporty versions appear.

I saw exactly the same Wednesday evening, at the lights. Only saw the front of it quickly as I was driving in the opposite direction and as you said looked very different from the front, hadn't realised it was the new Golf until I got very close. The minor change to the lights give it a much better look imho.

Could buy it with standard wheels and get some aftermarket ones.   Lots of great wheels out there and you'd save more than the cost in "luxury car" tax

Agree, there are lots of very good aftermarket alloys, and many of them have an OEM+ appearance; not that surprising really, given that alloy wheel manufacturers such as Ronal, Borbet and BBS who make a wide range of aftermarket alloys also make OEM alloys for VW and other car manufacturers.

I have a set of aftermarket alloys with a powder coat finish on my car because I really dislike diamond cut alloys and there wasn’t a OEM non-diamond cut option when I ordered my car. I’ve kept the original diamond cut alloys and they’ll go back on the car when the time comes to sell it.

That would be exactly the direction I’d go in.
Avoids having to have DCC too which would be a bonus for me but the other 99.9% of normal people could spec DCC and still keep under the £40k then add their own choice of wheel.

I just ordered mine and was going to spec 19” black wheels, but put it £50 under the luxury car tax threshold. So no margin for error with price rises.
Gone with standard 18” Richmonds which will come off straight away. Not sure wether to go 19” or stick with 18” for comfort and cheaper tyres

That's what I did when I got my Mk8 3 years ago.  Took off Richmonds and went with Team Dynamics 18s and have never regretted it.  I don't have DCC but I don't know if that would make any difference.  I'm pleased with the handling and the comfort, especially with all the potholed roads.  Tyres for £100 a corner and no broken wheels are a big bonus.

Order placed for the 8.5 GTI. Completely standard in pure white. My local VW garage couldn't quite match online discounts but got close enough for me to go ahead with them. Have been quoted 6 months for delivery so around December time.

Was torn between Dolphin Grey and white. Leaning towards Dolphin Grey, however after asking the salesman if there will be price rises before I take delivery of mine, he said it is possible there could be in November, but won't find out until nearer the time, I decided to go with Pure White to simply stay well under the £40k tax bracket in December if there is a 2-3% rise before that.

Looking forward to getting back to 18" wheels too, especially on these roads. My MK7 had 18s and I found the ride comfort better on that than my 7.5 on 19s.

Be interesting to see when they start coming through. Ordered mine last Thursday, was told 3-4 months but they have put 30/11 as the expected date on the order form. I went Moonstone only, so long as the price doesn’t raise £1400 before delivery I’ll be fine. Not sure I’m keen on the GTI badges on the front doors, think they will be coming off straight away.
