The Type R that you can’t buy
« on: 12 January 2023, 12:49 »
Honda make me laugh, loads of marketing and promotion of the new 2023 Type R (FL5)

Basically it’s impossible to get.

Honda only sent 194 to the UK and plan to send a few more in March and that’s our lot until 2024…

They sent 2000 to America and Japan had 2000. Seems like they only really care about the US and Japanese markets, in the UK dealers have back logs of people with deposits down, my local dealer has 15 people. They were sent… one! In America dealers have cars available to buy and in some cases have marked up prices by $20k

That is probably the reason Honda didn’t send very many to the UK.
The price is eye watering especially considering the relative good value the previous Type R’s were so Honda probably thought demand would be low.
The thing is a lot of car enthusiasts seem to have a hell of a lot of disposable income and there are a lot of people that love fast Hondas. Maybe Honda UK misjudged it or maybe the factory called the shots.

Not a million miles away from me is an importer of JDM cars bought directly from auction in Japan and shipped to the UK.
The prices of some of these cars are very high but they don’t struggle to sell them.
As a VW person it all goes over my head but there’s definitely money in it and people are happy to pay the high prices for what I’d consider an inferior product in many cases.
A colleague of mine is very in to JDM stuff and the cars are certainly not ultra reliable, he’s had a number of issues with cars he’s bought from the importer (torqueGT), the worst being head gasket failure on a Subaru which wasn’t a straight forward fix due to the JDM engine being lower cubic capacity than the Euro spec engine which meant specialist parts needed sourcing (big £££)

Anyway, my point being people will pay the money if there’s enthusiast demand and car enthusiasts are weird.

Tbh I love Hondas . I would have one and replace my CUPRA even at £47k but I can’t get one. My name has been down with a deposit for a while but I’m told there is no chance.

Talking of what people will pay … look what these guys are doing!   https://www.prestigecarskent.co.uk/used-cars/15530077-honda-civic-2.0%20vtec%20turbo%20type%20r%205dr/?finances%5Bdeposit%5D=1000&finances%5BproductName%5D=Personal%20Contract%20Purchase&finances%5Bterm%5D=36&finances%5BproductType%5D=Personal%20Contract%20Purchase&finances%5BannualMileage%5D=10000&finances%5BpercentageDeposit%5D=

That is why I finally decided to get 2014 Toyota Camry on https://abetter.bid/en/car-finder/type-automobiles for some 4000 dollars.
Honda has always been prioritizing the American and Japanese markets unfortunately. But the new Type R is definitely worth all the pain related to its purchase.

I just wonder what my parents Toyota Supra Twin Turbo UK is worth now, 52,000 miles, if a Civic costs £55k :undecided:

Just to put the price of the FL5 into perspective, here’s what a VW milk float costs nowadays

Probably quite a bit a they have a good following. A Guy I work with has two modified Supras which he’s owned for years and years, people spend decent money on them.

the new Type R is definitely worth all the pain related to its purchase.
Do you have personal experience of the FL5 CTR?
I’m genuinely interested.
Wondering what makes you say that.
I’ve never been slightly interested in CTR’s until the previous generation which I have huge respect for and I even love the video game styling.
High revving NA was never my thing (best left for bikes which aren’t towing 1 tonne plus of weight) but a 315PS Turbo mated to a lithe chassis, slick manual ‘box and buckets pricks my ears up a bit.

A mate of mine has a JDM Civic which I’ve been out in before so I’m not totally unfamiliar with them.
