Title: MOT Fail
Post by: Jordan_gti on 16 January 2018, 12:33
Hi people, my MK4 Golf GTI failed its MOT recently & this was the one reason:
•Offside Front Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.2.B.1f)

Is this the part that needs changing? (Link below)

That’s the part mate, although make sure it’s the correct part, you tried Euro Car Parts?

Chances are it is cheaper from a local motor factors and it is a common part so should get it that day.

Easy enough to DIY as well, just make sure you count the turns to take it off as you will need that many turns to put it back on. Always worth getting the tracking checked afterwards as well.

Soak current ones in ac90 or similar before your try loosening them.

Yes, count the turns and/or simply mark the rods with a paint pen. This is only good enough to get you moving and to closest  tracking centre.

May require heat and brute force to remove the old ones.

Job for this weekend?

Done now mate. What an absolute nightmare, the old ones were seized on, like more seized than Ive ever experienced. Had to get the old Nielsens out and clamp & turn the arm. Thank god its done!
