I had a similar problem on my GTTDi

Lots of play when in gear and sometimes felt like I was forcing it into 1st

Turned out it was the gear linkage on its way out
And I only found out when it had totally given out on me

Have a look under the bunnet and see if its rubbing against the engine bay
(It should have a few inches clearance)

Just thought I'd put my 10p in - I had a very similar problem with my Focus ST and that turned out to be the gear linkage assembly. Not a massive problem to fix but quite a big problem when using the car on a daily basis as it will progressively get worse and worse.

Hi

i bought my first golf last week, i ma experiencing the same problems in terms of my first gear and sometimes 2nd.  pain in the arse at traffic lights occassionally.

not too sure if my gear stick is wobbly?  will check tho.

im going to spray my gear linkages on friday when i get a day off with white grease.
