Golf mk8 / Re: Fitting an dashcam - warranty issue?

I bought my Garmin 57 about 3 yrs ago but I see that it is still on sale (£140 at Halfords, inc. 16 GB card). I got it because its is so tiny and unobtrusive and the image quality is very good. The way it attaches to the windscreen is also clever compared to the Nextbase I had previously, which would tend to fall off the screen when the weather got very hot! The Garmin has a small screen but I don't really refer to it (once it is set up). In fact I can't actually see it from the driving position. There is also a Garmin app which I don't use! If I have an issue and want to review any footage, I just pop out the microSD card and plug it into my PC.

I looked at that series of cameras, they look to be very good and I agree the magnetic mount is a great idea, especially if you wanted to swap between vehicles. I think I will end up just taking the microSD card out when I want to review any footage properly, but it is handy having the app there for viewing something quick or if away from home and no PC access. Not had a Garmin camera before but they seem well made and have good reviews.

Good summary exonian.

The problem as I see it is that with a combination of required safety equipment and emissions control you've increased the cost of any car. Then factor in the end of cheap finance and soaring inflation (impacting both your manufacturing costs and your customer's ability to have disposable income for a car) ... It basically means a car makers potential customer base is much smaller than for the last decade plus.

It's the perfect storm unfortunately and it's going to probably end mid price European manufactured cars.

High end of course will stay, the rich don't care but middle market with middle income customers...

What I think we will see at a minimum is this middle section reducing in model availability.

For vw specifically this is largely their place in the market. It's going to hit them the hardest of any marque IMHO

That is great to hear, which dashcam did you get? The Garmin I have is the mini2, really compact and hides well, just not used to having one with no screen so you need to rely on the app. The only draw back I find is having to disable Apple CarPlay to use the connection to the camera (both use WiFi).

Hi everyone,

Just joined the board, I’ve had several golfs in the past and lots of VWs but never a golf gti. The opportunity to get a 24 plate mk8 with low mileage has come up, I just wondered if there are any issues with the mk8 now? I know when it was first released there were quite a few, but were these rectified over time? Any other issues I should be aware of?

Appreciate any advice.

I bought an approved used 21 plate GTI had a couple of warnings pop up occasionally now they did latest software updates under warranty been fine ever since(rushes off to touch wood!)

I hav le had mk6 gti mk7.5 gti performance  and now this this is by far the best all round gti I have had so far love it!!

To many people listening to the problems on some of them buy it mate you will not regret it they are a great all round car !!

Hello, if you wish to take a look at my post on the "What have you done etc." from 11/11/23, you can see my Racing Line R360's in Gunmetal fitted to my Mk8.

Hello Tony, yes thanks that was really useful! If you’ve got any more please send them along, I am still undecided

I’ve recently fitted a Garmin dash cam with the parking mode / hardwire kit. Pretty straight forward, there are plenty of blank fuse positions to use for constant / switched power as well (no need to tap on top of an existing fuse). Everything can be hidden behind the glovebox and the cable run up the a piller into the headlining is also straight forward. Halfords should be able to handle this with no bother, providing they have a competent tech on it.

My previous car (VAG vehicle) was hardwired through the fuse box and went in for warranty work with no issues.

You are right. I eventually spoke to the salesman who sold me the car and he confirmed that there are no warranty issues provided the kit is installed properly. I got it done today at Halfords. The guy said to allow an hour but it actually only took him 35 mins. He accessed the fuse box behind the glove box. Needed a permanent live, switched live and an earth. They charge £55 to do the fitting. The new hardwire parking cable should have cost £20 but there is an offer on at the moment so that was free. All seems to be working fine so I am happy to have the security of a dashcam with all the crazy drivers about.

Good to hear! I don’t think I’ve ever managed to set it right on the first attempt myself. It was the same with my 8.5 a few weeks back.

The Scirocco being long dead now having morphed into an SUV (T-Roc) leaves VW with only the Arteon R if they still make it? The Passat CC never really made any headway this side of the Atlantic even when fitted with the VR6. The Yanks still get a decently styled Jetta GLi I think, but few in Europe would buy one.
I’d say an RS3 would likely be well north of £60k now once specced to how a typical RS3 owner would want one. And the humble Golf R is not far off £60k once specced up to the R brigade’s de facto level I’d imagine.
Mad world. VW are in the cart anyway, maybe they should switch production to tanks and drones to flog to their neighbour; only the Chinese do EV’s at the price point people can afford (at least in the UK where they don’t get hammered by import tariffs) so the Euro legacy marques are a bit stumped - can’t produce EV’s that people will buy in decent numbers and can’t sell too many ICE or they’ll get fined. Catch22.

I was chatting with a VW 'scene low rider' recently and always wondered why VW were so S**t at coupe/saloon options.

The Bora had potential in the MK4, it was interesting with the front end, with lots of practicality in 4 door and a big-ish boot.  Later in the ROW the Jetta was bland and uninspiring like the Passat, but BMW produced and made it work with the Coupe/2 series. Which is now an enthusiast dream.

VW had an opportunity to develop an R a GTi version in a saloon but missed the boat IMO, it would have been a cheaper milder M2 or M135I equivalent with boot space and 4 doors, they could have even used 4WD and not followed the very niche 2 door TT which I like but was only a 2nd car for most.

The RS3 starts at 60k now, so plenty of room underneath for another model that could be a coupe/saloon, but it seems VW have so little vision/money/interest in providing anything interesting.
