I've just run a tank full of the new BP fuel through the car.
I've been using only optimax for 3 or 4 months now, and thought it was the mutts, but this BP fuel seems pretty good.
It was a bit more expensive to fill up, and didn't seem to give quite the mpg I was used to - however I s'pose I was giving it a bit more right foot to see if it was any good. And the initial feeling is whayhey!!!.
It seemed a bit quicker on acceleration, and felt a bit faster all round.
This is first impressions, so I may be a little bit influenced in wanting it to be good. But, I'll keep you informed as to how it goes after a couple more fill ups
-
I work for BP and we haven't got the new fuels in yet in our garage, but my boss told me about it. What's the octane rating in it? Optimax was 1 more than the previous Super Unleaded we sold.
-
I'm not too sure, it never said on the pump, or in the garage. But I've heard anything from 97 to 100 RON.
Let me know if you find out
-
BP ultimate id meant to be 100RON, but ive heard talk that the UK version is only 98RON and the 100RON is for the continent
optimax was 98RON
i guess you can always check the RON rating at the pump when you go to fill up
-
Its 97 octane (see here http://www.bp.com/ultimate/uk/default.asp ), same as old super...stick to optimax.
-
just filled up again today with opimax ;D
-
Yeah stick with Optimax.
Better still come to Germany and fill up with V-Power 100RON!
-
I've nearly finished my first tank of Ultimate (in Hazels Audi) and to be honest I think I'll be sticking with Optimax. The car 'appears' to run better on the Optimax.
I've done quite a lot of tinkering with her car, trying to get it running at its best. To get it running well on 95RON it pinks like hell, however, if I retard the ignition timing until the pinking stops, it runs like sh!t. The best way round it was to use the higher octane Optimax and adjust the ignition timing until it stopped pinking (which was a little more advanced than on the 95RON)........and its been running great like that for a few months now.
Using BP's Ultimate, I noticed its starting to pink again, not as bad as 95RON.........but its definitely worse than using the Optimax.
Wish we could get the V-Power 100RON that Herr_Doktor mentions. :(

If only!

P.S. Depending on your ignition system (I'm no Golf mechanic) you may well need to adjust it to get the benifit of good fuel so just changing fuel for a tank isn't a good way of judging...
-
I'm going back to optimax, BP was ok for a substitue, but it's not going to be my first choice now
-
Rich,
I thought on the 7A engine on the Audi , the ignition timing is non-adjustable?
-
At some garages wher super or optimax is sold, the fuel can often be left in the tank for a while as it is not used as widely as normal unleaded. Old fuel can "go off" and lose its octane rating and is therefore in some cases no better than normal unleaded. Best to get the stuff where there is a high density of petrol heads.

Yep, you're right. We have 2 Audi's, mine is the Coupe with the 7A engine, Hazels is an Audi 80 1.8S.........the latter is the one I was talking about. 2 Audi's and 2 Golf GTI's.........I'm just being greedy. ;D

Your a lucky man, your wife lets you have all those cars? :o

Apparently Ultimate is only 97RON in the UK but Optimax is 98RON. Stick with Optimax. ;)

Filled my 1993 Golf 1.8 mono-motronic (AAM) engine with BP ultimate, and after about 10 miles the car started to run really badly!! When I take my foot off the accelerator, just as it settles back at idle speed, it starts to shudder and vibrate quite badly, same when accelerating back up again.
When driving though its drives like normal, no improvment. I'm worried though about the shuddering, as its worse when cold. On my model theres no 'check engine' light, so i dont know if theres a fault being registered, and I dont want to pay 60 quid to have vw 'just check' it!!
Once this tank has finished, I'm straight back to normal unleaded!!
-
How much do you people normally pay for Optimax?
I usually fill up at Tesco and pay about 75.9p per litre. Went to my local Shell garage and Optimax was 86.9p per litre :o :o :o
Dont care how good it is, Im not buying it til I win the lottery :P
-
I usually pay 82 or 83p/litre.....
-
What fuel should i be putting in my car...
I was using Unleaded, then i swiched to Super.?
-
optimax is much better, I find it cheaper to use over a tank full. But it depends on how your car is tuned - just try and experiment

I had the exact same problem whilst using optimax but after a while of using normal fuel the car start shuddering again. I've had my fuel pump changed and the car is better but I'm far too scared to try optimax as that shuddering is REALLY scary
