Title: vag-com 3rd party cable
Post by: jonesltd on 25 May 2022, 09:56
Right, looked into things and I simply cannot afford vagcom legit prices so need a 3rd party cable.

What cable works 3rd party and what software do I need to download from ross-tech to work with 2016 golf R? Is it VCDS lite 1.2 (or is that pre 2005 cars) or will I have to pay to download vagcom/ross-tech software to work with the cable? Its going on a laptop/tablet that wont have access to the internet.

You don't have to pay for tokens. All you do is watch some adverts and you get 6 free tokens per day. If you have Android phone or tablet then just buy a first gen device to keep the costs down.

I have an iphone 12...i just want to scan and sort faults out at my leisure without having to go get it scanned if that makes any sense. the cheaper the better ideally.

I can buy a cheap samsung phone if needs be and then would i just simply buy the pro pack for subscription and then thats it?

If you buy a gen 2 device it works with iPhone. Then just watch the adverts and get your free tokens 👍.

If you do go down the OBD eleven route.

i recently bought one, I found the cheapest place to buy one, was from OBD themselves,

It came next day delivery too.

The problem with vcds rip offs is you can only use it with the software it comes with, you can’t download a newer version as it won’t see the fake dongle
Obdeleven doesn’t need pro just for scans and etc clearing, basic dongle is fine, not sure you get next day delivery from east Europe, they have Amazon delivery on checkout BUT a few people have selected that and got a returns one, where the password has been set so you have to go through the hassle of getting voltas to clear that for you, also you can download the app today and start collecting credits then when you choose which dongle you like you should have a few credits to start with (the app can be on both android or iOS as your account is stored in a server and if you buy gen1 and a cheap android tablet you can just download, log in and have all the credits you saved in the app on iOS)

If you was closer I’d let you borrow mine when needed (I have gen 1 and gen 2) but it’s a bit of a trek from Dudley

It’s not too hard to code, long or adaptions, plus there’s plenty of YouTube videos to help you along the way (I’ve even got one)

I live 4 miles from Dudley.  I have Carista which has let me change quite a lot of things (setting the headlight wash to not spray unless I pull the stalk for 2 seconds was the best) but also lock / unlock bleep, rear light son when hatch is open.  That's about it, does OBD 11 do more than that?

The OBD11 Gen2 is like a miniature VCDS cable, I now have both and the OBD11 is easier to use and can do all the adaptations and long coding the cable can do.  Did all the below with VCDS coding on the OBD11 a friend uses Carista and couldn't figure out 90% of them, not sure if it is the reader or him though.

all depends what switches you have in the modules of your car, but it gives you access to all the switches (even ones that are not used in the car) you can look at my YouTube page if you like, it shows the acoustic lock/unlock mod done via coding (not app) and see for yourself the difference, but I warn you I don’t play around with anything that would effect the driving of the car like engine, gearbox, lights

Ever since I had my Mk5 from new I was convinced it should have had the 'teardrop wipe on front' as standard but my Dealer said 'no', wish I could have it on my Mk7.5 but I suspect I'll never do any re-coding.

Ahh I know what's happened here with Carista.

I have pretty much all those options on my carista, but there are two versions of carista:

1) is the one out of the box with the normal downloaded app, a fair few options.

2) is if you register for the beta / development version, quite easy to do and free, when you get about 10 x as many options, including all the obd11 ones, and that's the version I have.

Thanks again all.

It would be useful, but I find it’s easy enough to push the wiper stalk down for a single flick wipe and achieve the same outcome as the teardrop wipe.

I’m sure that’s a option you can change, defo on the back
