Title: Brake disc replacement options
Post by: Nino on 19 September 2023, 13:38
Hey all,

I would like to replace the brake discs and pads on my Edition 35 am looking for recommendations please?

I am not interested in drilled, grooved or the cheapest set on Euro car parts.

What is important for me is the best quality in both performance and anti corrosion.
I would ideally like to have coated discs - nothing worse than discs that rust on the edges and bell housing.

Thanks guys.

I've been using various versions of the Black Diamond discs on my cars for years now. The back coating is great in that I've never had issues with rust on the edges or bell housing areas.

I had great results when paired with EBC red stuff up front and green stuff on the back.

That sounds very promising, do you have a link to these discs?

Is it these?

If so, no good for me, I don't want any drilled or groved discs :(

Is there a particular reason why you don’t want drilled or grooved disks? Have you had a bad experience in the past?

I’ve been using grooved on cars since the 90s without any issues and have been running drilled/grooved on a Volvo C30 for several years without fault.

One of my friends had the MTEC drilled and grooved discs on his MK5 R32 and they were awful! you could really hear the extra scraping sounds from the brakes when he was braking and he went through brake pads like they were going out of fashion too.

Don't get me wrong, the performance was fantasic but that given with his wheels gettings absolutely covered in brake dust really quickly put me off ever using them for my own cars.

That’s why I’ve been sticking with EBC pads, they don’t seem to create too much mess and have a good lifespan. For heavier cars like the mk6 I’d always go red stuff up front as it’s a harder compound and can run a higher temp before fading.

I hate Redstuff installed on my MK4 R32 and I found they were awful until the brakes were hot

OEM pads then, keep it simple.

For people wondering incase you want to do it too.

I ended up purchasing Brembo UV painted discs.
More info on what this means Here (https://www.brembo.com/jp/ComunicatiStampa/2012/Brembo_UV_Coated_Discs_EN.pdf)

But in a nutshell;
When compared with discs with conventional corrosion protection , UV-coated discs ensure better resistance against corrosion, as confirmed by corrosion resistance testing in a salt spray chamber and moisture resistance tests. UV coating also clearly passes all tests with respect to resistance to high tempatures.

And will be using these pads.

Looks like a good option, so the coating they have is similar to that on the Black Diamond disks?

How much did it all cost, if you don’t mind me asking?

Exactly I did look up the APC Black diamond and felt that at the price point they are at, I could litreally upgrade to 6 pot :D

In terms of price, this is the crazy part. So, I looked in the normal places and they were coming in around £80-112 per disc for the fronts and £49-60 per disc for the rear. Honestly, I was happy to pay that but then I spotted them of all places in Halfords.... £180 all in (Not including pads)

Just to add as well, I don't Think Halfords realise that they have these incorrectly priced ether.

I just triple checked as I doubted myself, on the side of the boxes are the model numbers.
- Fronts are: 09.9772.11
- Rear are: 08.A202.11

As you will see from these links from the officail Brembo website, they are confirmed the UV painted ones :)
