Han did the tappets become noisy when the buzzer went off, if so you have genuine low oil pressure if not it's probably a sensor.
If you do have low oil pressure ask the garage to whip the sump off and check the gauze on the oil pump pickup for blockages. The missus' mk2 developed a low oil pressure problem and the buzzer kept going off I cleaned all the carbon crap off the gauze and it was fine afterwards.
Defiantely worth trying if funds are running low.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Yes but do they work with golfs? You may go round and round in circles until you get a specialist to look at it.. who might sort the problem in 5 mins (as phils example).

No normal garage, no matter how much they big themselves up, can even come close to a genuine vw specialist when you have a fault to fix.

Completely agree with this, in fact I had an independent VW specialist correctly diagnose a fault over the phone, that the VW dealer couldn't fix !  and this was on a modernish dub too!

Take it to a garage who know what an engine looks like Han otherwise your just throwing money at some spanner monkey. VAG specialist is a hassle but well worth it there is one in Leeds with a good reputation I know of if you are stuck. :)
