hi, What is best for trackdays, a mk4 2.0 or a mk4 1.8 turbo, not looking for a car with big power, just want to have fun and importantly be very reliable.

I'd say 1.8t
-
did i read that right? 2.0 8v mk4 ??
jesus.. that was the very worst GTI ever.. and that engine is nowt but trouble.. AVOID
-
If i go for the 1.8T, what are the best mods for good reliable power
steve
-
non tbh get a mk2 gti 16v
-
non tbh get a mk2 gti 16v
Or cheaper and probably more reliable - a Golf3 16V.
-
A better bet would be a mk2 or as DH said even a mk3, if it has to be a mk4 then a 1.8t
-
Mk2 gti with mk3 abf engine and wide track suspension
-
personaly wouldnt track a mk4.
2.slow would just be boreing. and 1.8T's can get very expensive in the matance department when been worked hard, they drop valves a bit to often for my likeing when run at high rpm lots and the turbos while fine on fast road cars are just not upto heavy track use

i track my mk 4, wouldnt say its that boring tbh. only had to give way to catehams and superpower cars on my last outing.
i have a 18t mk4 that ive done biased around track days. not fully stripped but done enough to it for a good track car. its not to bad tbh, heavy yes but its a golf. they are heavy. had problems with brakes overheating but ducting has sorted it. did 145 miles round combe on mon and it was fine. next track car wont be a 1.8t though or a golf, but spent to much for now so i'll enjoy it for a bit longer first.
next car needs to be n/a for me i think
that said you dont fancy buyin it steve?

Sorry o/t but any pics of your brake ducting I'm having similar problems, my mk4 1.8t is slowly becoming my dedicated track car I find it good fun on the track it'll be stripped out and caged later this year I wouldn't use a mk non turbo but the 20vt can be quite usable cheap to buy ,tune and maintain with no problems sourcing parts

The pics aren't the best of the ducts but they make a good difference.

excellent thanks shall be looking into this

1.8t followed by:
remap
descent disk pad combo
braided brake hoses
brake ducts
better suspension, stock suspension is rubbish
strip it
its a reliable car, there's many things you can bypass on the later models that give you a headache like n249 and n112, put things back to basic like on the AGU. Easy to work on and reliable providing you don't get a complete lemon. It's easy to work on aswell, plenty of tuning options.
I will be replacing the mk4 next year for the mk1 TT and swapping heads over from the golf and doing a full engine rebuild. Stock rod last around the 300mark, valves go at around 350, pistons at 400... so not a bad engine internally for tuning the 1.8T's.
