Title: 1990 Golf GTI 16v
Post by: Mew on 17 October 2009, 00:46
I've ended up with another Golf, which probably isn't the wisest move seeing as i still have the project sat on my Mum's drive, but oh well, it made sense at the time! :lipsrsealed:

For those of you that aren't aware, this was Chuff's mk2 up untill 2 weeks ago, so the overall look of the car is down to him (at the moment ), not that that's a bad thing mind as it's a very nice car and a credit to the man  I don't really plan to do anything to it, apart from sorting out the "little things", so any changes that come about will most likely be a spur of the moment thing.

That said........

The first job was to get some sounds in there, so i fitted my headunit and a pair of JBL 6x4s in the rear. Nothing special, but better than the hole that was there when i got the car and potentially the best setup i've had in a Golf so far (i'm not a big ICE person).
Inside i have also added a warning buzzer to remind me when i have left my lights on (which has happened more than once in the last 2 weeks :lipsrsealed:) when the ignition is turned off. Simple but effective.

I went out for a "spirited" drive with a couple of mates the other day and nearly got chucked off the road several times as well as grounding out on a couple of ocassions, so i think the suspension setup will be changed in the near future.

The number plates have now been changed to proper legal items, mainly because i think they look better, but they also come with the added bonus of not risking a fine.

Next up for the exterior will be a set of original lamps up front. Currently fitted are a pair of crystal headlamps and smoked crystal spots, as well as some yellow fogs. The plan is to get all new Hella items if i can find them, or failing that at least some Hella headlamps from GSF. Having said that, when it comes to parting with the cash i'll probably end up with pattern parts for half the price!

There is also a small issue with the engine. Hopefully it is just the tappets that have gone, so in the not so distant future i will be ordering a set of tappets, a cam chain, a cam belt and tensioner and will be attacking the top end. If that doesn't fix it i'll either hit it or cry, or maybe both.

Oh, and it sounds like the osf wheel bearing is on it's way out.

It's good to be back in a mk2

it's fully working

That was a lie actually. The car tried to abandon me in Reading last weekend by not starting. It would turn over and then just as it started to run, it would cut out. Eventually got it going and the following day i gave all of the earths a clean and that seems to have sorted it (so far).

I also need a new front passenger window mechanism, as the current one has decided to jam. The driver's window switch has also died, but 2 new switches have been delivered today.

So, the to do list (in no particular order):

replace tappets, cam chain, cam belt, tensioner etc etc
replace osf wheel bearing
replace window mechanism
replace window switches
realign rear wiper (it moves to the left before it sweeps down to the right - annoys me)
replace headlamps, spots and fogs with standard items
replace rear seatbelt (frayeda bit)
keep an eye out for a 90spec driver's seat (current is pre 90)
replace suspension with higher setup (maybe a complete kit, maybe just springs)
Get the CO and idle properly set up
fit new headlining
adjust the way the sunroof sits when closed
make/fit uprated headlamp loom

I miss the Skoda

Today i have made and fitted an uprated headlamp loom. I was getting just shy of 10v before fitting, and although i haven't been able to measure the voltage after fitting the loom, the improvement is very noticeable.

I have never had a problem with the lights on any previous mk2s that i have had, but when driving home the other night down some country roads i was really struggling to see far enough, even with full beam and the spots on. The beam pattern seemed to fall on the road in the right place, it just wasn't bright enough, but that's all sorted now. Not the tidiest job mind, but it does the job

I should have a new window mech fitted by the end of the week, and while i'm at it i'll put the new switches in. I'll hopefully have a new set of front lights fitted too.

I now have some original headlights sorted, so that will be the front end back to standard spec very soon. I'm also picking up some new shocks tomorrow, which i'll combine with some 40mm springs to bring the ride height back to a level at which i can (attempt to) drive the thing properly :lipsrsealed: My only concern is that with the ride height raised the tyres are going to look a bit gash (45 profiles), but we'll see.

I've decided that the tappets are no longer a priority as such, and that they can wait until after Christmas, when i'll carry out a full service including valve stem seals, cam belt etc etc. They haven't got any worse since I've taken ownership and they don't cause me any isssues.

Depending on how Christmas and work go, i'm going to look into getting my RAs refurbed in the new year, and that'll be the exterior done to the spec that i want.

agree with you on the 45 profiles, that why you got them ( despite being as new  )  as they didnt suit the passat. should get some cash back for the rubber mind, i know nick was looking into getting rainsports  :undecided:

Tyres will be staying on the G60s i think, will have to see how it looks before i do anything. I don't have photoshop anymore, trying to get to grips with this GIMP, but it's not going well so far

Picked up some Boge Turbo shocks yesterday. Pretty much brand new, complete with standard 16v springs and top mounts for £20.

The guy was going to give them to me for free as it turned out that one of the rear spring top plate things had rusted through, but i would have felt guilty just taking them for nothing, so I gave him £20. Still a bargain though, and only a fiver for a new plate from GSF.

I'm on the hunt for some headlights again, as the ones that i thought i had sorted are now unsorted!

I've fixed the sunroof today. The front left has always sat slightly proud of the roof, and when on the motorway quite a lot of noise comes from up there, as well as a draft. Well it turned out that the sunroof panel was only attached to the rhs guide, and was actually sat on top of the lhs guide, so wasn't really secured at all on the left. I had a fiddle and put the runner back in the guide and adjusted the height. It's not perfect, but it's pretty much spot on and there is no noise from it at motorway speeds now

I also took apart the throttle mechanism to give it a clean up, as it wasn't returning fully and as a result the idle switch wasn't being activated. That is all done now and a hell of a lot better, but the action when flooring it still doesn't feel quite right. I also managed to lose the throttle cable clip on a gravel driveway, one is currently on order with VW.

I'm also starting to doubt whether or not the osf wheel bearing has gone. It hasn't got any worse since owning the car and earlier i noticed there is a sort of shield that seems to be bolted to the back of the block and covers about 4" or so of the os driveshaft, and there is a little bit of play in it. I'm yet to investigate that though, and i'm going to Doncaster and back this weekend so i'll leave it how it is for now.

I finally swapped the spot lamps back to the originals today and the front end looks much better now.

I have also found that the exhaust is leaking where the downpipe meets the manifold. I'm unsure if its the joint that's leaking or if there is a hole in the pipe so I'm going to go down to kwikfit in the morning and see if they'll put it up on the ramp. I really hope its something simple like the bolt is loose, but I doubt it.
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!
Post by: Mew on 03 February 2010, 00:03
It failed it's MOT test last Thursday.

The grumpy sod of a tester shook his head when i went in to pick it up, telling me "you've got a few problems with this one".

What he meant was:

Play in the os lower balljoint
Brake compensating valve seized
Leak in downpipe

A balljoint was ordered from Matt (Beavis) and promptly delivered for less £££ than anywhere else, a can of penetrating fluid has been bought for the brake valve and 2 new downpipes have been bought, as well as a decat pipe, for which i will explain below....

I have bought a standard 16v downpipe, but in order to fit it the subframe apparently needs to be dropped due to the resonator box. This could be a right b!tch of a job without the car on a lift (or costly if paying for labour), so i looked into a mk3 downpipe and a decat. In theory the mk3 downpipe can be slotted down from above, and then once bolted onto the manifold the decat can be bolted onto the downpipe from below. Much easier!

I've done a fair bit of research into this and i'm positive that the parts that i've bought should bolt straight up to the mk2 system with no problems. However, this is me, so the standard 16v downpipe will be the backup plan.

Hopefully the car will be on the road by a week this Thursday, as after that i'll have to pay for a retest.

You need a friend with a large garage, full air set-up, lots of tools and a 4 post lift!  It currently has 2 x mx5's (one various states of becoming full spec race machines), a TVR race car, a 996 and a GT40!  There was still space to get my 8v in and on the ramps.  Nice when I didn't know he was into cars until his wife was round our house dropping the little ones off and she mentioned that he had just sold her Lotus 21 and she was having to drive the GT40 on track days!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, just the hourly rate which i forget now, but approx £50ph.

He sounded reluctant to put a 16v downpipe back on though. If i didn't supply the parts then he was going to put an 8v downpipe on there and weld a section of my old downpipe to bring it back up to 16v bore, or at least that's the way i understood it. That was going to be in the region of £250

Quite! That was the norm though tbh, and for once Kwikfit were quite competitive at £270 all inclusive and they could do it within the hour. That was with the proper 16v downpipe too, or so he said......

Yeah CQ's hourly rate isn't cheap, but at least they know what they're doing. I'd rather pay them £40p/h than the blokes next door who probably haven't touched a Golf in years and also charge £40p/h.

90 miles with a leaking exhaust and no MOT, to sort out the leaking exhaust and get the MOT sorted?

Can't you make a sufficient case in your head that you can just go do it?

The force is weak in this one.

I actually did a couple of years ago (even got pulled over for going through a "red" light that was actually amber), but i'd say i'm a bit more sensible about these things now and realise that it was indeed quite a foolish thing to do :lipsrsealed:

Technically you're taking it to a place of repair, so as long as it's taxed and insured you should be able to give The Man two fingers - check the legislation yourself and make sure you book the retest before leaving to drive to it.

Well, as hard as I have tried, the downpipe to manifold nuts aren't budging. However, the manifold to cylinder head nuts are, so that's coming off tonight. Fun fun fun.....
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!

I'm well and truely f**ked off with this thing. The £9 gasket that goes between the cat and downpipe doesn't fit, the nut on the exhaust clamp (downpipe to front pipe) is rounded off and i'm yet to tackle the downpipe to manifold nuts. I've got to go to argos to get an angle grinder and there is effectively a snow blizzard outside.

There was no way i would have got that downpipe off the car on the driveway!

I've just had the downpipe changed, o/s ball joint replaced and both track rod ends, which were completely knackered so i'm not too sure why they weren't picked up on in the MOT.

All in all it's cost me £45 for the original MOT, £45 for parts (downpipe, ball joint, track rod ends), £60 labour and then it will cost me another £45 to get an MOT on it now that i'm past the 10 day retest period. So all in all, pretty much £200 to get an MOT. That's the biggest MOT bill for any car i've had

Only £100 or so is engine related, the main chunk is discs, pads and bearings
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!
Post by: Mew on 16 June 2010, 10:45
New rear discs, pads and bearings ordered.

I had a look at the rear bearings yesterday as they have been groaning slightly, but having jacked up the rear there was no play present in either side at all. After reading around I found that the nut should be finger tight only and there can be a tiny amount of play present.

Well mine were done up stupidly tight, so i'm guessing there has been play in the past and that they've been tightened up, or they were over tightened in the first place which has caused the bearing to fail. I backed them off a bit until they were finger tight which introduced a slight amount of play, but after a quick roadtest it appears that they're definitely gone, so they're being replaced asap.

For anyone that might be interested:

Quote
Hello Ben

Really sorry to mess you around, I feel terrible.

Basically there is no crack, it was just easier to write that rather then a long winded story that would probably sound like a complete load of bull....

Firstly, the wheels came on a car I scrapped over two years ago.
It was bought off a friend of a friend, who had originally wanted to keep the wheels, but would leave them on for the right price.

I didn't want them, as they wouldn't fit my or the Girlfriends car, but my mate did, he didn't have the money so I carried on with the deal and payed for the car complete with the wheels.

They sat in the corner of my lock up for well over 2 years, I fell out with the guy and he never payed me the £260 odd he owed me, even with visitsand promises he would collect this weekend or next.
In the end to be fair I just forgot about them.

Moving house so had to clear the lock up (and to be fair it is crammed to the roof with crap) I asked a few people locally If they wanted to buy them, then listed them on eBay, someone has obviously told the slimey twit and for some reason he now thinks he owns them, apparently did pay me and was funnily enough going to come and see me just the other day...

So I'm getting threats of Police action and 'mates paying me a visit' and all that, so would prefer to sort the matter out without involving a third party so to speak.

Again, I am sorry to mess you around.
I hate nothing more then this sort of thing, and fully understand If you feel pissed off about it, I know I would.

Kind regards
Andy

Today i found this:

It's the wiring and connector for the idle switch on the throttle body. Pretty knackered!
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!
Post by: Mew on 06 July 2010, 15:03
Throttle switch connector now repaired. I haven't done it with the original connector, but I've crimped on some connectors that will do the job until i get an original connector to put back on.

The idle has stayed the same, but sometimes there is a bit of a dip in revs when coming off the throttle, so a proper timing and idle/CO set-up is in order asap. The switch definitely works though, hold throttle open at around 2k rpm and press the throttle switch and the revs drop back down.

Post by: Mew on 12 July 2010, 22:47
Well, it all went a bit wrong the other day, the result of which was more oil on the a34 than in the engine.

Fault finding consisted of stripping down the top end and as a result i've narrowed it down to either a crank seal or (the one that i'm taking a gamble on being the cause) the cam seal. However, I have found a mystery inlet cam that is stamped "933" where the VW stamp of "027" normally is. I've measured it and it seems to have a lift of 8.9mm compared to the KR inlet's 9.6mm, so I'll be rebuilding it all tomorrow with a set of KR cams
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 13 July 2010, 10:27
possibly a 9a inlet?
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!
Post by: Mew on 13 July 2010, 10:38
I expect so. Cgti guide has the 9a down as having 8.8mm lift. I'm measuring 8.94 pretty consistently, but either way, its not what it should be!

Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!
Post by: Mew on 15 July 2010, 14:36
It's all been back together for a couple of days now with not a spot of oil dropped. KR cams are in and they don't feel any different, until you get to about 4k rpm when it pulls harder for longer. Still need to get the fuelling set up though.

They were in Oxford, I/the car wasn't. I was thinking about buying some, but I wanted to make sure I had cured the leak before chucking any more money at the engine.

Next up is going to be brakes, then wheel bearings, then suspension and then we'll see how the engine is after that lot :lipsrsealed:

Finally got round to sorting out the gear linkage bushes and adjusting the rods the other evening. I also replaced the ball thing (shift finger i think?) with a brand new one as the old one was down to the white plastic core. The result is it now takes less than 3 seconds to change gear and the linkages now have enough throw on them to select gears properly, as they were a bit short.

I took a fair few pics, but my phone says otherwise
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!

I've been doing a bit of "de-chuffing" lately.

The front end now has standard headlights and spotlamps, although the fog lights are still yellow.

Mk3 rear handles have been replaced with original mk2 handles.

Colour coded door mirrors have been replaced with standard black plastic mirrors.

Driver's seat has been replaced with a 90-spec 5 door seat, rather than the pre-90 3-door seat that was in there.

Next to go will be the smoked side repeaters, to be replaced with standard amber items.

In the next week or 2 I will also be replacing the suspension. It's looking like i'll go for some 40mm springs on a set of Boge Turbo dampers, so it should still look reasonably good, but be high enough to drive properly. After that will be some new wheels, most probably a set of RAs.
Title: Re: Mew: Got another one!
Post by: Mew on 27 September 2010, 17:29
Rear discs, pads and wheel bearings replaced. Both front wheel bearings have also been replaced as well as both ARB drop links.

I have also swapped the suspension for a set of nearly new Boge Turbo dampers with new rear spring top plates and some new Apex springs.

I'll take some pics after I have removed all the parts/crap from the boot and rear seat

Driving this more regularly again.

Failed it's MOT a couple of months ago on front wiper blades.

Has since had a full service and running much better after new plugs.

Today's fun and games involved a new backbox and front brake pads.
The remains of the old backbox were a bit of a b!tch to remove, but the new one went on easily enough and lined up nicely. Looks strange having chrome tailpipes now, having got used to the black ones that were on there for so long.
For anyone after a standard 16v backbox, I would recommend the mts item from GSF.

I'll bung some pics up tomorrow, if I remember.

Yeah, which made me a bit hesitant about purchasing these as I didn't think the ones you had suited it tbh. However, I don't know if it's due to the fact that these have grey centres rather than black or 195/50 tyres rather than 185/55 (iirc?), or maybe a combination of both, but I think this set work quite well

yep, i ended up with even more of 45s on the Cups  :lipsrsealed: i hate them, prefer the 50s.

Might treat the cups to some Uniroyals, really rate them :afro:

Drives far better on the 50 profile tyres than it did on the 45s

Work carried out this week was a new outer cv boot, oil and filter change, new cam cover gasket, new throttle cable and a throttle body clean and mechanism stripdown.

I've never been 100% satisfied with the feel of the accelerator on this golf. Upon inspection of the cable I found it to be slightly frayed, and at the pedal end the rubber bush was split and the cable secured with a metal plate on the end of the hook, which hadn't done the rubber bush any good. A new cable and bush were purchased, and with the old cable off I had a feel of the throttle body mechanism and it wasn't great. I removed the TB and gave it a good clean inside, although it was surprisingly clean anyway. I then went about removing the throttle mechanism and cleaned each component before reassembling. It really has transformed the feel of it, throttle action is now much smoother and lighter, probably one of the most satisfying jobs I've done!

Just remembered a fairly big change that I carried out a couple of weeks ago. The Apex lowering springs have now been replaced by standard height springs from VW Heritage

The car did look very high at first but I don't mind it now, although that's probably due to a combination of the springs settling and me getting used to it.

Pics to follow.....

The rims on this car are so sweet. They look just fantastic with the black arches and darkened rear lights. Amen to another man who gives a sh!t about maintenance.
