In theory it works and helps, but I doibt it's nothing you will feel in the real world. Never hurts though especially when it can be done easily and cheaply.

Coating the gearbox in paint was a stupid idea.  It will retain heat more than the bare casing, which may well reduce the life of the 'box.

If there hadn't been endless wittering about this for about two years before anything happened it wouldn't have attracted such derision.
