7.5 GTI Performance - Regular servicing and oils
« on: 19 September 2023, 10:39 »
Hi all,

So I’ve had my GTI for a month now and loving every moment. I’m starting to think about what oils to use as I’ll be changing it every 5000 miles. Checking on TPS, it recommends Quantum 5w-30. I’ve personally never heard of that brand and wanted to check with people here what oil they use to have their engine run sweet. Seems to be multiple Quantum 5w-30s available (platinum/long life), although I’ve never really trusted long life oil and prefer to do frequent changes.

Have people actually used Quantum or is the consensus that other brands such as Mobil1 or Castrol are better at reducing wear inside the PU?

Also would be grateful for advice on when the spark plugs and gearbox oils are changed! (Mine is a manual)

Thank you!

Quite a few choices - I personally use Millers Nanodrive 5W-40 (based on a couple of recommendations) every 6 months, which is about 2k. Probably a bit overkill but hey ho, like you, I don’t like extended 12 month+ Servicing on a car I intend to keep for a long period.
It’s also important that the DSG and Haldex (if fitted) need a 3 year service with the latter getting a filter flush.

Nothing wrong with Quantum oil, manufactured for VW by Fuchs Oils.

Put it in my CS and change it every year regardless of miles.

Essential to get the front VAQ diff serviced at 3yrs/30000 miles, and make sure they clean the gauze filter.

Currently running Quantum myself changed every 6k, I'd ideally prefer Millers for the extra sulphur like Adam but can't be arsed with the faff anymore.

Never heard of that oil either so did some research. It’s actually a motorsport spec oil, which I’m assuming is held and manufactured to a higher standard. I’m not an oil genius but is there a difference between 5W-30 and 40? Assuming the 40 is thinner? Do you use a different brand oil filter too or the standard VW ones?

The maintenance guide is super helpful thank you!

Sorry what do you mean by extra sulphur?

5W40 is thicker use with standard filter.

In Millers there's extra sulphur in it, it adds more lubrication so there's less wear on engine components.

Will TPS sell to the public?

And anyone know current/recent prices for Quantum Long Life III?

I tried TPS a couple of months ago looking for disks and pads, they would not sell to me.
It might have just been my local one near Preston tho, your local one might.
