Turbo intake leak - hear me out
« on: 02 July 2012, 18:41 »
As you are all probably aware and sick of hearing about my overboost I won't go into detail only that I've tried all the common shizz

And I can't get to Rtech for a while due to days off.

Anyway, I have a loud whistle noise, which should mean underboost if its a boost leak right? What if the pipe feeding air to the turbo (anywhere) had a leak, that would mean it can suck in unmetered air right? Meaning a possible overboost condition?

I think it would have to be quite a large hole to make much of a difference. But I guess that does make sense... :undecided:

Take it off for an inspection  :undecided:

Im not up to date on your prublem but Have you had any work done recently? I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a boost leak from a pipe not sealing propperly after it was all put back together after a cam belt change

Can that cause overboost ?! I have recently had Cambelt done but this problem has been going on for ages. Loud whistle must be a leak, just the overboost but also lack of pull... Hmm

IMO vnt and actuator work fine

Is it a constant loud whistle or just under acceleration?

You can hear it at idle, but it does increase as you accelerate, and you can hear the tone change with the actuator movement. So as it requests less boost the whistle isn't as loud.

So yes, constant but its tone and volume changes, getting loud as you accelerate until the VNT is relaxed, to which the whistle is inaudible.

Hey no problem mate, I've tried everything else I can think of/been told. All I can do now I think is check for loose pipes causing the whistling and then book into rtech

Could be worth taking it to your local garage for a smoke test where they will inject smoke into the system and the smoke will then escape through a leak if there is one..sorry if you've already been there and done it
