Title: Edition 45 news.....
Post by: evo1986 on 27 April 2021, 20:57
Golf GTI Clubsport 45 opens for order on 29 April

The exclusive Golf GTI Clubsport 45 opens for order on Thursday 29 April to celebrate the birthday of a Volkswagen icon.

Product information
The Golf GTI has been on the market since the summer of 1976. Volkswagen is marking its 45th birthday occasion with a special anniversary model – the Golf GTI Clubsport 45.

This exclusive anniversary model is based on the 300 PS Clubsport. Both models offer a front-axle locking differential integrated with the driving dynamics manager.

Visual highlights of the Clubsport include larger air intakes (delivering more oxygen to the TSI), a specially designed open roof spoiler to allow improved airflow (greater downforce), and a separate sport exhaust system.

The Clubsport 45 is ready to take to the road with more individual customisation than ever. The exterior boasts a striking black roof complete with black roof spoiler, in homage to the black-framed rear window of the first Golf GTI.

The Race package is available as standard and exclusive to the Golf GTI Clubsport 45. Equipment includes:

19-inch Scottsdale alloy wheels in a high-gloss black finish, with a narrow accent pinstripe detail in Tornado Red
Titanium Akrapovic sport exhaust system and removal of the Vmax limiter (maximum speed is 166mph versus 155mph on GTI Clubsport)
Edition 45 styling, including exclusive lettering on the side sill panel which characterizes the special GTI model and underlines its dynamic appearance
Black painted roof, upper shell of the spoiler and door mirror covers

£39980 OTR

Now we have official details of the spec, with;
"The Race package is available as standard and exclusive to the Golf GTI Clubsport 45".

The additional cost for an Ed45 over a regular CS seems  to be the way to go, although discounts may be harder to find?

On the pricing front, if you order a basic car in white, I assume you limbo under the £40k additional tax hurdle?

I think you get the £555 first year VED as well over the price. I’m often wrong though.

Correct - the OTR price includes first year VED, the 40k limit is just the (list) price of the car itself.

That's the same price Coast2Coast was stating a few weeks ago, so they must have known back then. With their discount it was £36484 I seem to remember, which is still more than a vanilla R, but you do get the questionable 19's and the Akra as standard.

It seems the ED45 cost is all about that exhaust from what I can see, as we know its an expensive option.

I'd have gone for Black if I was getting one as think it looks best, even though you do loose the roof and mirror elements.

Bet it will be a rare model so will hold value nicely.

I was also amazed at that,,,,,,, with such promotion, they fear it isn't going to sell itself on merit? :)

Now on the Drive the Deal seems a decent discount
White with Rear camera and winter pack added keeps in in the cheaper tax bracket

I’ve got a few CS45 screenshot configurations saved already from DTD. Too much time in my hands? Good discounts definitely as I think a lot of dealers will tow the line of less discount on a limited model. Problem for me is that DCC, if picked as the only option, takes you about £150 over the threshold. Gutted.

That is annoying as it’s just over, but the fact you can get pretty much the same discounts via dtd as on a regular clubsport is pretty surprising.

I spent a couple of weeks umming and ahhing over which options to get to keeper that under £40k and in the end just decided I didn’t want to compromise even if it means an extra £6.25 a week for years.

On one of these - you’ll either love it so much you won’t care or be able to sell it for more with the option as it’s gonna hold its value.

Some good points there Kenis. Anniversary models are always harder to get discount on. I managed to get a decent one on my ed35 which surprised me and it did hold its value exceptionally well. In fact when it went after 2 years (massive error) I had £5k equity.

The CS is the logical choice but I love an edition.

Just be mindful that if it is very close to £40k after extras and the car takes months to arrive, any price changes to list price will apply to your car tax on delivery.
The price you order at is what you pay VW but the list price it’s delivered at is what the car tax is set at.

Spot on as always Andy. I just decided that if you want an Ed45 then you will have to pay the higher tax if you want any meaningful options. DCC takes you a smidge over.  It’s the only option I want but if you want it you have to pay. Frustrating to say the least.

My biggest dilemma at the minute is do I sell my CSS to buy one
I’ve a feeling that if I do I may well regret it
Title: Re: Edition 45 news.....
Post by: Exonian on 02 May 2021, 12:42
Spend a bit of time in one first Sean.
The Clubsport has a similarly good chassis but as an overall package it’s no CSS. I don’t think anything will be again any time soon.

I’ve owned it from new and done 14,500 miles it’s been properly looked after and maintained
Tbh I’m only changing for changing sake as I still really enjoy driving it and owning it
It’s still in amazing condition being ceramic coated from new and this has been maintained topped up and reapplied
The underside has ACF50 applied 3 times per year
The inside is like new the seats have tailored covers on from the 1st day
At the minute they are making silly money I can sell it for more than I paid but for how long will that be the case
I don’t think there is anything else at this price point that’s comes close to the CSS
I toyed with a Yaris GR but I know it wouldn’t  for me
Looked at various used stuff Caymans M2 competition cars. etc but I’d be buying used then and prefer to own a car from new at least then I know the full history
Difficult call to make but what you say is right I do need to drive a Clubsport before making the decision

It will be interesting to see how long this model runs for given that the Mk8 has just been released.  Unlike the Ed40 which ended up being time limited, the press release for the Ed45 does not mention a time, or number of units sold, cut off like the Ed40 press release did.  Maybe this model will run for some time which is why discounts are good?

For anyone that needs reminding, posted up by king monkey in the other thread, the exhaust sure sounds a beast!

I’d still not sell a CSS to get one!

Thanks for that Andy. It’s that video that will sway me to the 45.

The 45 is limited by time. Confirmed to only be in production in 2021.

Some interesting comments here, and I agree with some of the "it didn't feel special enough" sentiments as I too had the same, when I first drove the normal Gti (base spec in white) then a Clubsport (base spec in Dolphin) and then the R (Dealer demo spec in Lapiz, with Pano Roof and DCC) the R, regardless of its optionals, was the best of the bunch by far.

I really liked the Clubsport, but I did think it was a step down from my Edition 40, not by much however and that's why I was holding out for the Edition 45. However, after seeing real life pictures of the 45 and comparing the real dealer discounted prices it was less than £600 difference for the R I have orderded, spec for spec over the 45.

The other thing that swayed it for me, was that from week 48 (in Ireland at least) they will release a "Racing Pack" which has Scottsdale wheels, delimited top speed, and an Akra exhaust for the Clubsport, meaning all the Edition 45 will have as a special stand out will be the side stickers, the black roof and the 45 badge on the steering wheel and maybe, the GTi logo on the seats, assuming that does not become standard or part of the above package.

That said I am sure it will be great and I'd go for this if I was getting one.

I'd chosen the white as my option originally, but then my wife said it looked like a "Safari tour" with the stickers down the side and I could not get that image out of my head, then again does the above look like the original batmobile?

As I said before.... the 45 sticker.... people will say "why is your race number 45?"... unless you are Scott Redding of course.

The ED45 seems like a poor value choice tbh and I think I've been saying that for a long time before now.

Can you tell us what the dealer says in regard to expected timings please when you have the information? I'm potentially going to put an order in myself as I keep delaying and delaying and am going to pull the trigger but after a meeting with a dealer yesterday and an expected delivery time of 30 weeks I'm still thinking it over.

I've been told 20 weeks. I'm resigned to waiting longer so of it comes in 20 weeks then great. But I'm realistic know the the automobile industry is not a priority for semi conductor's right now

I've cancelled a normal CS which was supposed to be coming in July for this. My reasoning is what is an extra month or 2 when I'm 1 year of car ownership and kicking myself over the CS45.

I haven't actually got any paperwork yet. So when I do it might say something else. I'll keep you posted.

Many thanks. 20 weeks sounds much better. I've been going back and forth over an 8R 8CS and now 8CS45 and then the colour options think I've decided on a 45 in black in a good few options but that'll probably change. Thanks again.

The production run isn't scheduled until late this year and will run for only a few weeks... Production ends with Christmas...

Makes commercial sense that does Fred I guess. To get all the bits and bobs in for a limited run and bash 'em all out together. Then again VW and making sense don't go together to well.

Well, 52 weeks in a year... Basically December but it's a short month.

While it's not a strictly limited production, the short time window and available build slots will limit it quite a bit...

Ah ok so there weeks are in line with the calendar year.

Wowzas by the time that swings by I'll be buying it outright with all the savings. I hope its wrong but bet it isn't. Dealers are clueless is they are saying 20 weeks to me

Congrats on the order mate, what spec did you go for?

Regarding lead time, I've been quoted 16 weeks on my R but I have read a few places they have stopped production right now to get the infotainment issues sorted as they have a backlog of recalls and rejected cars to sort. Not sure how true this is, but the fact we know they have issues could be possible.

I'd be suprised if they make all ED45's in week 48 for the UK, the German market ones are out now and seems some coming in the next months, Irish books was open way before ours so if they get RHD cars in say August we can't be far behind. Plus you can get the "racing pack" from week 48 which would indicate the end of the ED45 run?
