So out of the blue both of my key fobs have flashing red lights! VW customer service is shut, any ideas on what’s going on? Thanks.

So it turns that when I move near to the car the red LEDs on the fobs flash (the nearer I get the quicker they flash) then when I move away from the car they flash slower then stop when I’m about 20feet away. Told VW they have never heard of this and have booked the car in for a two day diagnostic. So it begins!

I've seen it flashing before, but no idea what it means.
Is your keyless turned off?
Was the car locked?

Has the battery in the car been unplugged at all? Sometimes the red light indicates it needs 're-syncing', but I'm assuming you can open the car and drive normally anyway, which might mean that's a useless path to look at...
Is it possible the car key batteries just need replacing? Although again, I'm guessing being a mk8, the car is only 6 or so months old, so that seems a bit odd, especially with both keys flashing.
Have a look on Audi/Skoda/Seat forums too, the key fobs are basically identical and someone might have other ideas across the range.

The VW each that I spoke too earlier thinks it must be related to a sensor on the car due to the fact that the frequency of the lights flashing on the fobs changes the closer I am to the car.

It does it on mine IF, I have the area around the car for auto unlocking turned on. Try turning that off and it will stop; it’s no glitch.

Just double checked on keyless system, everything is off. So it’s not that.

Car has been in today for the flashing key fob issue, according to “master technician” the key fobs are supposed to flash as you get near the car. Apparently they are communicating with the car.

Well, it will talk with UWB but if you look at my thread on keyless, it should be quite close before it does it.
I've never seen mine do it...

I did point out that it appears to be BS to the service guy but he insisted that the master tech had looked it up so it must be true. I asked if I get free replacement batteries when the fobs die? Of course sir was the answer. 🤷♂️

To confirm, my key fob has a small illuminating red light that flashes as I approach the vehicle.
It's clearly the key communicating with the car, irrespective of keyless entry being enabled or not.

I've worked out why it flashes even with keyless off.
It's to do with the convenience lighting. If you have it set to activate on approach the key light flashes. If you deactivate it, the light does not flash

Vehicle settings, exterior, comfort light.

I guess you only want it on if you are using keyless and without unlock on approach... Because pressing the remote lights it up as does approach unlock...

What is the setting in that menu? I don't have anything in there that does that... Suspect that's one of the bw48 things....

On mine it's at the bottom of the menu. You have to scroll the screen to get to it. Below the leaving delay time

I have this set to off and the fob continues to flash when within 10m of the car.

I definitely don't have that setting... Its a bw48 thing for sure.

Thanks joet. I don't have this option. It must be only for the newer units 816D/820D...
