clean your tires properly first.

I use this product and it works fine.

I reckon 2 thin coats are better than one thick one.

As already stated, tyres need to be properly clean (and dry) before you use it.

Are you applying it with the foam pad thing?

try using a pad or do what i do and you the spong side of a washing scrubber - that seems to work a treat as previously i'd been very dissapointed with the performance of the Megs Gel

Make sure the tyre has had a good clean prior to applying the dressing. A microfibre should be ok for applying, but I always use the Meg's Tyre Applicator:

the trick with tyre gel is to put a thin layer on, let it dry, buff it off, then repeat 2 or 3 times.  I've used the megs stuff in the past and found it to last up to a month.

I highly recommend Blackfire Long Lasting Tyre Gel, it is amazing.
