Hi
I have a problem with my Golf GTI X reg, the temperture gauge is hitting the red everytime I drive so I have to keep pulling over, its telling me to add coolant but I have enough in there (I got it checked out)
What could the problem be?
Hollie

Thermostat, sensor in the coolant bottle
By the sounds of it though your water pump is knackered - DO NOT DRIVE IT!
How long has it been doing this?
-
started doing it last night, then it was doing it on the way to work! It's it expensive to fix?

Budget about £300 as you got to remove the cambelt to get at it. Its labour intensive
part itself is about £40 but seeing as its all being stripped down you just as well replace the cambelt if its near its replacement date
How far have you driven as you could have done further damage to the engine.
-
Ohhh gosh only had the car a month!!
I drove to work this morning and its about 15mins down the road, 10miles I would say, but then I have drive home tonight
-
Hopefully with you doing short runs you wont be damaging the engine but its hard to say.
The vw standard water pump can go at anytime due to it being made of plastic. The replacement part is a metal type pump.
If you are going to drive it home then dont let the temp go past 90 degrees to be safe. You may have to keep pulling over and let the engine cool down.
But its your own choice and risk.
-
Ok probably be better to go down back roads so easier for me to pull over? as I usually go dual carriageway
Thanks for your help

Running it that hot even on short runs may have caused damage.
-
Looks like the water pump!! Taking it in today to see if my warranty will cover it which it should. Fingers crossed I dont have to pay a penny
-
Drive a couple of miles from home, pull over and call the AA to recover you to the garage - that way they can't try to wriggle out of the warranty by blaming you for causing extra damage.
-
good idea but i'm not member of any break down companies, yes i know its stupid i need to get that sorted to
-
You could try ringing the garage and asking if they'd recover it F.O.C because you're not confident it'll get there in one piece? I assume hol is short for hollie.. throw on the girly charm they'll bend over backwards for you
-
yeah it is short for hollie! I got it there, they are working on it now, I hope to find out the verdict today
I will let you know how it turns out

Bloody hell that is good, either it was done under warranty or you had to resort to payment in kind that shouldn't be discussed on a family forum like this one
-
hahaa, yes it was under warranty and i'm glad it was too
