HELP!! 16v in mk1
« on: 13 November 2003, 22:26 »
Just bought my latest project from a dubious lad. As far as i know i have a 2.0 16v from a mk3. Is there any way i can confirm this? (no engine no's, like i said, dubious) its got an ali sump and what looks like brackets for a p/s pump, if that points in any direction. Its got a ported head, cams, and twin 45's a mk2 dizzy and ecu. He mumbled something about the crank trigger as the reason for this dizzy. Does that sound right? Ive had it running, all be it very roughly, but want to get everythink straight in my head before i start pulling stuff apart. Its 10n years since i last put a valver in a mk1 and i left the injection on that time. Carbs are a bit new to me!! Help and advice greatly appreciated.

It may be a "ABF" engine out of a mk3 golf. Tall block, about 150hp on inj, more on well set up carbs. What g/box, 020 or 02a?. Dist out of a mk2 sounds right as it is a easy way of loosing the engine management from the mk3.
Interesting, ;). Steve.

Just interested in the box that you have in your car as I have a 16v mk1 also. The 020 box is the standard mk1 gti box, o2a is a cable shift box used in later VWs and is a lot stronger. I am still using a o2o box and don't know if it will stand up.

Its not a cable change box, just stock. A stock box will be okay if you dont go beserk with it. I used to give my first 16v mk1 a bit of a ragging years ago and it lasted quite a while. You could try a diesel box or put a 16v box in and use late cabriolet drive shafts, or change the flanges for your early ones which are smaller.

I know about the different sizes of the drive shaft flanges, 90mm or 100mm. Don't think that the shafts are the weak link, it's the diff that will go first. Diesel box uses the same internals as a 8v box, just different ratios. By the way, my 2000cc 16v has a turbo on it ;).
