Winter grip - Clubsport
« on: 20 December 2021, 11:35 »
As the temperatures have dropped I've really noticed the grip reduction on the Bridgestones. Trying to put any sort of power down from a standing start is interesting!!! Not so bad once its up and running.

How do the Goodyears compare?

I was just thinking the same this morning. Bridgestones were really slippy and that’s on a standard GTI.

On my MK7.5 PP I’ve been through a lot of different sets of tyres and the best wet handling and braking ones I’ve experienced were the Hankook Ventus S1 evo3’s.

The best all round tyres though are definitely the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S’s and I use them exclusively now.

Bridgestones seem to be made from a ‘hard as nails’ rubber compound which might be good for mileage, but isn’t good for optimum levels of grip, especially when the weather turns colder.

I swapped the Bridgestones on my Polo GTI+ for a set of Michelin PS4 after three months of ownership.

I've never had Bridgestones before General Conti's supplied with cars I've bought I've tried the Hankooks on a BM I had once I quite liked them, Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 3's I had on a Leon FR (TDI with a decent slug of low end torque) which were pretty good.

Its interesting hearing everyone's thoughts and my own conclusion about the Bridgestones seemingly being too hard for winter roads.  :undecided:

PS4's are surprisingly good in the wet and in the cold. It's when it's cold enough for them to harden up (like sub 8 degrees) and it's wet they start to struggle.

Even so, if you roll into the throttle they are very good for a summer tyre.

I'm running dedicated winters Goodyear Ultragrips and as we're still around the 4-8 degree range it's not cold enough to fully benefit from them, that being said they're still pretty good but they are definitely far better in the sub 3 degree range.

Last year I was still running Pirelli P-Zero's and it was like an ice rink on them.

Think this guy agrees

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cNgNCu0gsHE

Just watched that and I'm now infuriated by his review!

Why do they not know about the lane assist being on the end of the stalk and the ESC being configurable on the faourites!!! and still banging on about the interior like he did on the R!!!! Also

"I Promise you you will keep touching the steering wheel buttons"

I've never done it in six months of driving mine!!!

Anyway onto the tyres perhaps I'm a bit more mechanically sympathetic but haven't had the issues with mine in the summer even on damp days until the temps have dropped and the tread blocks aren't as good at getting the power down.

I wonder if they have this much of a fuss when they moved from the sliding heater dials in the 90's to the twist dials
