No experience of aftermarket alloys yet so talk of spigot rings and corrosion spooks me badly.

If spigot rings corrode and fuse to the alloy :

1) are they supposed to? and
2) what difference do fused spigots make to getting the wheels on and off?

Lower cost alloys like CM Prets don’t need spigot rings, should I just go for them instead and save myself £1,000?????

Sorry, that probably came across as overly dramatic. Spigot rings fusing to the alloy is no big deal and will easily fall out when removing the wheel but if you’re nitpicky like me you’ll want to replace them. Also, like others said here you can go with plastic items as long as you don’t plan on tracking the car.

Cheap pret copies are not in the same league - weight or quality wise - but they don’t need spigots (a minor issue common to most after market alloys). I looked at the cheap prets and couldn’t do it. Each to their own. Lots of happy customers on here.

You can get plastic spigot rings if you’re worried about metal spigot rings corroding and fusing to the alloys.

I would certainly believe they are linked. How on earth did you manage to snag it?

If it was a simple cheap fault, don't you think the seller would just get it fixed and either keep or sell on at the higher price? I very much doubt there is any money to be made.

Has anyone placed a ‘join the queue’ deposit of £500 with their local dealer?

VW are clearly expecting a high demand or are they trying to gauge interest??

Golf mk7 / Error in the emergency SOS system?
« Last post by nuoptik on 11 July 2025, 17:55 »
Hi Peeps, I have a 2019 7.5 <cough> R  Estate/Wagon that's recently started throwing errors in the emergency alert system - something i've never used or thought could be used without paying for the VW connect service (that i no longer do).

The car says this through the speakers, quite loudly, and the light next to the SOS button turns red. It does it seemingly randomly, and then goes back to functioning, and green light, and then does it again. Its loud and kinda off-putting when it happens.

The only thing that it may or may not be related to was using a roof rack for the first time last weekend and a cable getting snagged on the antenna on the roof while loading or unloading from the roof rack. It's not been visibly damaged, moved, or loosened, but it's the only thing that coincided with this alert starting.

Do we think it's related, or just a red herring? I've found some posts from a few years back of the system being replaced under warranty when other R's similarly threw SOS errors, but my car is alas no longer under warranty, and i don't want this to cost me a ton from VW, for something I don't even use.

I have an OBD11 dongle, could i use this to silence or turn off the SOS system potentially?

I thought about pulling down the headliner to look at the gps antenna to see if something had been knocked loose, but i don't even know if this has anything to do with the SOS alert system, and I'm not super brave about messing with the headliner. Don't want to make anything worse.

Any confirmations or help would be appreciated.

"dsg fault" could mean anything...

It could be a few hundred quid of parts and a bit of amateur level spannering or it could be thousands and super complex...

Do you know your way around a VW DSG gearbox? If not I'd give it a firm pass...

Sorry meant to add, re tyres: I know the SC7s so chose them. Plus I couldn't find the Pirelli in 235/40/18.
