Title: Insurance
Post by: Foxy367 on 10 December 2021, 13:08
My Clubsport renewal is due at the end of the month, I'm with Hastings and looking like Admiral will be cheapest for next year, before I hit the go button are there any specialists I should try?

I've always found Adrian Flux expensive relative to the comparison sites but just wondering if there are any others

TIA

Assuming you’ve already used one of the comparison websites to get a range of prices, you could try some of the insurers who don’t feature on these sites - e.g. Direct Line, Aviva (I think Aviva may now be on some comparison sites though). Don’t necessarily go with the cheapest price - an insurer with a top notch claims service but who’s not the cheapest is IMHO a better bet than an insurer with the cheapest premium and a rubbish claims service.

You could also do a Google search on ‘insurers of performance cars’, which will probably give you the names of some specialist insurance brokers who have agreed a special scheme arrangement / discounted rates with some insurance companies. Additionally, you could try the traditional route of using a high street broker who can search the market for you - they may also have preferential rates / premiums with some insurance companies, so may be surprisingly competitive compared to some of the big names on comparison sites. Specialists are also likely to have more knowledgeable staff if your car is modified / non standard, so they’ll have a better understanding of the insurance risks associated with modified / non standard cars than some of the large insurance companies.

I seem to remember that Sky Insurance used to get quite a few mentions on this forum - they may have been a forum sponsor then. They still exist but are now Safely Insured, so you could always give them a try too. They specialise is performance cars, modified cars and young drivers.

Be aware that most insurance companies increase their prices the closer you get to your renewal date, so drivers who leave sorting out their insurance until the last minute will usually be quoted a higher premium than someone who gets things sorted a few weeks in advance.

SR thanks for the feedback, I saw the Martin Lewis thing about the insurance increase as you get closer to renewal

Age will be one factor that influences the price. However, insurers premium calculation algorithms are so complex these days and use multiple risk factors, there could be other risk factors that have a more significant impact on the price than a policyholder’s / driver’s age. A mature driver could also have a relatively high premium - e.g. if they;
The good news is that from next year (I think), insurance companies won’t be able to charge a higher renewal price for existing customers than the price they would charge an identical new customer. Although price levelling is good in my opinion, it’ll probably mean that new customers will pay considerable more, rather than an existing renewing customer being charged less .

With insurance it will also be that the policy is targeted at a particular risk profile. The more you deviate from that particular profile, the more you will pay....

And of course they never spell that out to the applicant...

  • live in a high risk area
  • have an occupation where they’re driving a high annual mileage
  • have additional drivers on their policy who are young and / or have a poor claims history
  • have motoring convictions or have made claims under their motor insurance policy
  • have modified their car
  • pay their premium monthly and have low-ish credit score

to be fair i appreciate everything you've said there which was why i didn't ask what people were paying as there are so many variables. i have ended up renewing with Hastings, Admiral got a really bad write up on Trust pilot when it comes to customer service compared to Hastings. This is the 4th year I've stuck with them as every time I've rang they have price matched the cheapest quote

I was with Hastings for years. I picked my clubsport up 4th Jan, and they weren’t able to insure as their systems hadn’t been updated, and didn’t have the vehicle. The customer service agent said they could just add it as the closest match on the system, which I was less than enthusiastic with 😂

I got the cheapest quote with VW themselves last year. It’s not quite as competitive on the renewal, but I’m probably going to stay with them
