Title: Rear Indicator Sequence
Post by: Markee on 05 August 2022, 15:43
Back in December last year i bought the missus a 16 plate GTD, i did my usual checks before buying a car and it had an advisory on the MOT for an irregular indicator sequence. Went to look at the GTD and tested the indicators and it looks like it should sweep but it was alternating boot to panel, like it had 4 rear indicators. Obviously i mentioned this to the VW salesman and he looked as confused as me but said he would get the technicians to look at it. They said there was nothing untoward and we bought the car. Since i don't drive it i'd forgotten all about but today the missus gave me a lift as my TCR is in for a front end respray and it jogged the old grey matter. The MOT will be coming up in a few months and i'd like to avoid another advisory, plus personally i think it looks a bit daft. I can't find anything in the infotainment so i'm thinking the previous owner has had a play around using an OBD reader? I tried to upload a video but the Postingimages site is only for pics so you'll have to use your imagination a little lol

You're spot on. Someone has changed a setting via vcds or OBD2. I think that's the closest you can get the pre-facelift rear indicators to scroll dynamically like the facelift. Personally I think it looks terrible 🤣

Thats what i think are called "pace car indicators" and is a coding change.

Thank you both for confirming, and yes i agree it looks pants! However it has confirmed that VW didn't actually look at it otherwise they'd have spotted the change?
So i'm guessing i have two options:
1. Take it back to VW and get them to change it (i won't be going to Newbury where i bought the car!).
2. Purchase a OBD reader and change it myself. Never had one before so some idiot proof recommendations would be greatly appreciated

An OBD reader will not change the Pace Car Indicators, you need Carly, OBDEleven or a VCDS cable (or know someone local that has one) and also need it long coding out and not the App as you do not know how it has been done.

I think you can also buy a plug in adaptor that does it too. Might be worth having a quick look at the back of the light units to see if something has obviously been added.

Having never seen or used any of what you've just mentioned it's like a whole new language to me, i have heard them mentioned but stupidly thought it was just a case of plugging in said device and looking at indicator options

I'll have a rummage around and see if i can see anything the looks out of the ordinary.

I've just watched a couple of videos where people have done it on OBDEleven and VCDS, i don't know the cost of either of them but i don't see the point in me buying something that i'll only use once as i have no desire to tinker around with the software. I'm more pissed at VW for blatantly selling me a car that had an MOT advisory for a software modification that they should be able to quickly rectify, so i will be paying them a visit!

This was what I was referring to:

Will be obvious if they are fitted and getting to the back of the lights takes moments.

I think if the sequence was like those the missus wouldn't mind so much, however hers do this (skip the vid to 3 mins to see the sequence)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I4RwUvd0QA

I had a look in the boot and the carpet flap bit on each side to access the plastic retaining screw is joined, by about 1cm, to the main lining (can get my fingers in the top and bottom) which would indicate that the lights have never been accessed before as the sealed bit would need to be cut to get to the retaining screw and remove the cluster.

There's a couple of garages around me, with one offering electrical services, so i'll give them a shout before going to VW.

On obdeleven or vcds you need to go
09-central electronics
Adaptions
Leuchte16BLK SLB35BLK SL KC9
Lichtfunktion A16
Change back to blinken links hellphase (yours will be on dunkelphase)
Then go to
Leuchte17TFL R BLK SRB3TFL R BLK SR KC3
Lichtfunktion A17
Chang Back To Blinken rechts Hellphase

Security code is 31347

VW won't do it, they wont know how, they just plug things in Diagnose it and swap parts. They will most likely charge you a fortune to flash the Module back to stock.

If you put what area you are in then someone may be close that can do it for you for some Beer/Fuel/Heating money.

#Ebay Link#

That would be a total waste of £80 for something that's just been switched in the software and can be changed back. By far one of the cheapest options is the Carista device.

Sequential can not be done with Carista or VCDS, it needs the loom adapter (like Below) to add a delay to make it work.

Thats not what was asked, watts thought that maybe it was a harness fitted making the lights flash at different times, op said lights hadn’t been played with and it looks like coding (as in pace car indicators) so it looks like the guy needs charista obdeleven or vcds to put it back to stock

Tagging on to this, I have enabled the pace car indicators on my car, but the halves of the light still do their little bit sequentially, if that makes sense? At first I thought this was a side effect of it being a 7.5, and that the modules just were sequential and that's the best I could get.

However, I recently noticed that when I unlock the car, the first flash of the inner half, the whole light comes on together rather than sequentially. Is there further coding to get them to do this all the time?

Thanks for all the input, comments & offers. I had a mooch around some of the local garages & they were asking for £50+ just to plug in without any guarantees they could revert them back. With Carista being £24.99 plus £9.99 for a months subscription i went with that. I have to say with me being a technophobe it was easy to set up & customise. The indicators are now back to normal, plus made a couple of other changes at the doris's request! I may plug it into my TCR a some point for a nosy but i'm in no rush.

Glad to hear it's sorted and was simple enough . One of my favourite simple changes with an OBD11/Carista is the change the lane change indicator so it flashes 4 times instead of 3. Always found 3 was far too short!

Carista was used on my car to disable the stop/start.

You can enable an option on the screen to turn the DRL's on and off too.

Yo need Carista, the dongle is about £20-30 and you get a month free with the app.  You might need to register for the beta version with 10 x as many options... and you then turn 'pace car indicators' off.

There's useful things you can do, such as setting headlight wash to not happen unless you pull the stalk for 2 seconds, a bleep when you lock the car, tail lights on when the boot is open, and a range of other things.

I turned pace car indicators on briefly on my Mk7 (which doesn't have the sweeping indicators) but then turned them off again,
