Hi guys,
Purchased a 1999 Golf TDI SE 90BHP this month, from a lady owner, with full VW service history, mileage just hit 66k however, I am facing quite an issue with the acceleration from 70mph onwards at "level ground". The car accelerates fine up to 70 but then it become VERY sluggish! It takes over 30 seconds for it to accelerate from 70 to 75mph. I have even tried dropping the gear to fourth at around 70mph but the results are the same. When the motorway is a bit down hill, its ok oviously, I've managed to hit around 98mph max then. (Please note, speed tests done on the M6 after 12am from J10 to J6 and back lol!)
Would be grateful if you could shed some light on this problem.
Many thanks.
Naz

Sounds to me more than likely to be the usual problem with the air mass meter* being knackered .
*the unit is situated between the airbox and the induction pipe
And it looks like this : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-0280-218-132-air-flow-mass-meter-sensor-06B-906-461_W0QQitemZ4621673566QQcategoryZ9889QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
PS it would be best to get it checked out first or if you know someone with the same model / engine code they may be kind enough for you to try theirs before you get a new one.

Hi thanks for the reply,
How can we tell if this part is at fault..? Can this fault be picked up on the he VW computers at te garage? And how much is this likely to cost to be replaced at VW garages and at independant garages?
Sorry guys, I'm a newbie :)
Cheers!
-
Should cost you about £60-£70 at the dealers mate  and thier computers should pick the fault up

Hi guys
Do I need to buy the Air Mass Meter or the Air Mass Meter Sensor or both???
And is it an easy installation? What does it involve?
Cheers!
-
Unfortunately you cant buy them separately, and you will need to exchange your old one.
-
Oh so the meter and sensor are all in one???
Whats the difference between these two:

Yep the maf consists of air flow sensor and housing.
To be honest i would go to your dealer to get one as the portland group dont use genuine bosh parts so i am not sure how reliable they would be.

real easy to change m8y, just 2 or 3 screws hold it all together with the air box piping..
careful with the new unit when installing it tho', dont wanna break that one too do we!!
-
Sounds just like the air mass thingy.
We had two 'lack of power' problems with our 110 TDI AUdi, first was the air mass (similar symptoms to yours) second was the CAT, where performance is even worse and 45mph becomes your new max.
-
how strange, the tdi seems to be fine now and I haven't even done nothing to it...!
it now accelerates above 70mph witout problems but acceleration isnt rapid above 70.. takes about 5 secs to move from 70 to 75 better than before i supose (seems to be an intermittent problem???)
however, will it improve performace if i go ahead and change the MAF anyway??? Will it make the car perform better with a new one??
-
mine was very intermittent when it went, sounds like the mfa for sure..... you'll definately feel the difference if/when you change it.....that is if it is the problem :undecided:
-
Sounds like the MAF to me. I have just tested mine with VAGCOM. Not conclusive but could well be playing up, however, might also be an intake blockage problem.

dam i just won an item on ebay which is a genuine VW MAF (037906461CX) for golf engine code: AGU as stated in the listing!!!
BUT MY Golf 1.9 TDI 90BHP has the engine code AGR - I just checked on the label by the spare wheel!!!!
Will it fit???
-
Dunno the differences mate but I'm sure that an AGU is a petrol engine
-
dam petrol engine so theres no chance of compatibility?????
-
Just looked on ETOS and the part number for the AGR engine is 074 906 461
-
oh rite... but hey i got it for cheap lol he may not even post it to me lol £9.99 for a MAF wat a bargain but what a shame it wont fit mine!!!!!
