'That' video!

I wouldn't put too must pass on people that do mods for the sake of it or are being paid to show the company doing the mods.

BCS option is best at managing this with the addition of the Helmholtz resonator.

This is what I wanted to do - bit more noise but without the boy racer look.

I was pretty shot down on here as most owners are happy with their GTI and don't seem to want any extra noise!

Just seen this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKhiTav5XNI

Is it me or the does the new Polo GTI actually sound better than the Mk7.5 Golf GTI? Definitely making more exhaust pops and the engine noise sounds beefier.

Fitting a clubsport back box should do the trick...

Unfortunately I found out the hard way that the clubsport back box doesn't easily fit the GTI mk7.5. The tailpipes are slightly closer together on the mk7 and clubsport compared to the 7.5 so my original exhaust is now clamped back on

went into vw parts department
and they advised there is kit which they offer
its made by oettinger quad exhaust system
just need to buy rear diffuser total bill would be 1200 notes fitted
so currently thinking of this option

option number 2 is upgrade mine to 7.5 with performance pack
as that sounds very sweet

I've driven 2 of the pre facelift RS3's, one had sports exhaust and there other didn't. Normal car sounds great, especially in Dynamic. Sport exhaust just sounds amazing! Depends if you like that sort of thing though! Serious crackles on the overrun and down shifts.

You can an APR crackle tune with Stage 2 - I think this was inspired by the Audi software that does it.

Sounds good value for money...

Just idle musing, wondering if anyone would know...

It probably doesn't make any difference on the golf but I remember seeing on (I believe some sporty BMW) that the shape of the back box was modelled to improve the airflow under the car

By taking the backbox off, and just having these pipes, surely the resulting "hole" will disrupt the airflow under the car?

Yes Gary, anything you change like that will effect the aero - which is optimised for reducing drag (ie improving fuel economy - aka "CO2 emmissions")

A void will create a problem like this - but you don't care really. It won't effect real life performance - you might care if you are racing, but on the road, nothing different.
Title: Re: exhaust notes
Post by: Garynovis on 03 May 2018, 15:44
you would think, for the price of adding a sheet of metal to mimic the shape of the old box, the manufacturer of the delete pipes would put one on and advertise the fact there was no impact to performance (even though, as you say, on the road the difference wouldn't even be noticeable)

There are some short clips on Motech's YouTube and instagram accounts but they may be too short to draw conclusion

I did speak to Tom ( TGE from the Motech TGE special ) when I saw him last month and he said it's fine. His only regret is the air filter which he said is too noisy and makes him look like a teenager but the rear box it's self is good.

Motech has say the exhaust is louder without drone and this alone will bring the dsg farts back. Whether that's true I don't know.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve watched all the videos extensively and decided not to go for the back box delete. I think it will be too loud for me in person and I might now consider just a resonator delete.

I had the Remus back box delete done yesterday and first impressions are really positive. I think it looks great, I love the sound on cold start and under normal driving conditions it's just a bit louder which is what I was looking for. I crept out of my street last night and the neighbours weren't running out of their houses.

I then went for a drive round the block and shoved the DSG into sport for a motorway sliproad - then it was really loud on upshift, a huge DSG fart which is what you see on YouTube. It was comedy loud to be honest but I don't have DSG in sport very often.

I will report back after a week of commuting (a combination of motorway and country roads) so some bits with DSG in normal and some bits in manual with the paddles.

Looks really smart that does, nice and subtle. Will be interesting to see what it’s like commuting with, I’m very undecided on the back box delete or the resonater delete. I previously had a res delete on my mk7 fiesta ST, but that did tend to drone. Quite annoying when you want a nice & peaceful drive to work on a Sunday morning! Just want something to make the DSG farts more prounounced without the ASBO tagged on

Cheers Jim, loving it so far! Congrats on the upgrade too! I was constantly looking at Clubsport parts and then getting annoyed when they wouldn't fit our facelifts - not sure what I'm going to do with my evenings now . I do miss the tech a little bit though and I don't have sweeping indicators anymore.

To be honest, I had ordered the Remus for my 7.5 and delayed the install when I decided to go for the Clubsport. Thankfully it is adjustable so it fits all of the mk7/7.5s and when I decided the Clubsport still needed a bit of help I booked it in. The real test will be this week but I've kept my Clubsport back box if it needs to go back on.

How many miles have you done, as the sound does improve.

I went for the Remus resonated car back system, really please with the fit and finish.

After a week of commuting, here are my thoughts on the Remus backbox delete...

Cold start - a lovely sound that puts a smile on my face - no complaints from the neighbours or my wife. Looks great.

A roads to motorway - really like it. Not too loud but lets you know it's there.

Motorway - fine up until 3,000rpm but drone above that which gets a bit tiring. Sounds like it needs another gear - maybe they should do a 7 speed DSG ;-) Music is turned up to compensate.

Country roads - bit of extra noise nicely replacing the Soundaktor, which is now turned off. Upshifts with the paddles or in sport DSG mode gives really loud farts. Nice noise on downshifts, particularly when coming to a stop. Happy to drive without music so I can listen to the car.

A few comments at work saying how much better it sounds (although unfortunately one did say "more boy-racer").

Overall, I'm glad I've made the change for the cold starts and country roads but I could see me changing back (and maybe doing the res-delete like jaceyboy) if my commute changed to be more motorway based, as the drone above 3,000rpm is there as feared.

I had the resonator chopped out today and I am really impressed. I am surprised how much volume you gain, not only under load but DSG farts too. I was a bit skeptical before having it done because a lot of people online (mainly Americans) have said it made next to no difference but I am 100% happy with it and so glad I didn’t go through with my original plan and chop off the backbox.

I have just recorded a quick clip so once I’ve edited it I’ll get it up ASAP.

Sounds like a result! Thankfully nothing is irreversible... although if I do decide to put the backbox back on and then follow suit I might be more clamps than exhaust!

It’s really good quality, stainless steel and mandrel bent. I got it fitted by them and there was no issues at all, I would highly recommend.

Mines the 230PS Facelift. Yours will sound even better being the 245PS because they sound more meaty as standard. I got them to fit it, arrived at 9am and left before 10am.

I know this may be unpopular (esp in the context of this thread!), but is it possble to do the opposite? Reduce the noise & pops underneath (wihout affecting performance)?

Sounds nice! Assuming yours is a DSG?

Assumption correct, I have a GTI equipped with the superior transmission

pfffft

Wish my manual PP would pop and bang, my old Cooper S was great for doing it!

Golf has a few little pops on first start up but thats it, would this bring them out during driving?

Sounds good, been trying to decide on this for months now.  What's it like on the motorway? I figured I would find it too intrusive with a constant drone so it's put me off doing it so far.  I used to have a cherry bomb exhaust on my first car (Old mini) and it was so loud I got bored of it and went back to standard... don't want history to repeat itself!

It’s only when you’re on boost that you hear it so tootling at 70/80 in 6th/7th is as silent as standard.

Which one did you go for?

Resonator delete from here - https://progressiveparts.com/vagsport-vw-golf-mk7-gti-clubsport-s-resonator-delete-pipe-kit (https://progressiveparts.com/vagsport-vw-golf-mk7-gti-clubsport-s-resonator-delete-pipe-kit)

Sounds great hog, I'm very tempted for my cs .....might take a trip over the pennines!

I’ve just had the Milltek race catback (non-res) fitted and love it. Its exactly what i wanted. Only slightly louder than stock when driving normally but plenty of drama when pushing on. The system in itself is top quality, the welds and fitment speak for itself. Would recommend.

I'm tempted to go stage 2 with my CS which would mean intake, intercooler and full system. Just curious what you did with the old exhaust system, did you keep it or sell it or bin it?

Made a quick comparison of start up noise between my previous Mk7.5 230 (grey) and my new 245 Performance model.

New one definitely a deeper noise and more crackles on way down.

Fitted a VAG Sport res-delete a few weeks ago. Slightly louder, slightly ‘growlier’ no drone at any revs.
Fitted the Clubsport S backbox today. Slightly louder again without sounding at all obnoxious and ‘aftermarket.’ Lots of growl and burble. Much quicker to respond to throttle than GTI box.
Absolutely perfect, proper sound now for a GTI in my opinion.

Nice one! Was the backbox easy to fit? Where did you source it from? Cheers

Very easy. One cut to the pipe. Old box out and new one in using the same mounts.
I ordered from here: https://cars245.co.uk/item/audi-volkswagen-5G6253609DD-rear-silencer/
It’s a two week order from VW then a two week wait while it gets sent from Latvia.
Needs a 65mm clamp too. Think I lost the VAG part no but it’ll be an easy find on Google.
Btw the tips are bigger!

Thanks for that  Sorry, one more thing, does it fit okay with the standard diffusor even with the bigger tips? Cheers!

Might be! Been thinking about it for a while and Lump's description of the benefits has sold me in theory, but do I want to spend £400 on a bit more noise? Possibly...

Thanks for asking about the mirror caps, they arrived just before going on holiday so what with that and nights at the moment I haven't had a chance to fit them yet. They look great, just hope they fit okay

Anyone has or thought about one of thesehttps://belugaracing.com/product/vw-mk7-15-19-golf-gti-mkvii-2-0t-light-weight-catback-exhaust/ (https://belugaracing.com/product/vw-mk7-15-19-golf-gti-mkvii-2-0t-light-weight-catback-exhaust/). Lots of mk6 running them and "you tube" seem to give them a good review.
