Rattle between 1700rpm and 2000rpm
« on: 03 October 2025, 09:37 »
There is a rattle that is annoying me and I cannot trace it. It sounds to me like it's coming from the front of the car rather than the rear (the attached video is right under the front subframe which is probably obvious). It is not present at idle, comes in around 1700rpm and fades above 2000rpm. It is much more noticeable outside the car (if you have the windows up, you can only really just about hear it).

https://packaged-media.redd.it/naupkame2qsf1/pb/m2-res_1080p.mp4?m=DASHPlaylist.mpd&v=1&e=1759496400&s=ca9812d7f39687b83a946eaa4dc2e067be3cc84e

I've had the car up on ramps to have a good look around and nothing is obviously loose. It is worse when the car is under load (e.g. pulling up a hill) but does do it even when stationary as per the video.

The car performs absolutely fine. The engine sounds sweet in every other regard, pulls great and doesn't give any errors.

Is this noise familiar to anyone? I am aware of the common wastegate rattle but it doesn't seem to quite match other recordings I have heard of that (but correct me if I am wrong).

Any lose heat shielding anywhere, mine has a rattle similar, but I’ve not got around to sorting it yet.

I've been under the car front to back and just cannot see a simple heat shield loose. I even removed and refitted the rear heat shield above the back box with new fixings as it seemed slightly loose. But no change to this noise, sadly.

Maybe fuel lines or brake lines rattling against the underside of the car? I can vaguely remember reading of this being a cause of underbody rattling noises on a golf forum in the past - maybe it was this forum?

Yeah, it's a good shout but I forgot to say I've also zip tied the fuel lines already as per other posts suggest. No dice though...

I cannot really tell from the video but is it the waste gate rattle they are renowned for is it? As that happens at those revs.
Plenty of videos out there of how to bend the rod and or fit the clip.

I've now actually fitted the wastegate clip as a just in case, but the noise sounds the same to me.

I might have to park the investigations for a bit - spent too long on it already  :undecided:

Thanks for the suggestions.

Quick question, I can hear a slight hiss in the video too.

Have you checked the PCV is ok? and odd question, was your Climate control set to Auto during this video?

Turn off your AC/Climate and try it again see if the noise goes.

No, the AC would not have been on when I recorded that video.

I took the car on my commute today and it could be a placebo but might have been the noise was less noticeable. Perhaps the wastegate clip did make a difference... Harder to tell at the moment as it's coming into "windows down" season. Will monitor over the next few outings!
