Golf GTI 8.5 - Queenstown Wheels or basic 18inch
« on: 19 December 2024, 14:07 »
As a proud golf owner of a Golf 8 GTI with Adelaide Wheels and with many golf before...
I am just looking to buy a new 8.5 Golf GTI next year and are unsure whether to add the new 19inch Queenstown Alloys as it is pushing up the price of the new car over the £40k price bracket ; increase VED, increase cost etc.
Any advice would be appreciated.

My personal view is that the Queenstown wheels set the car off much more nicely than the standard wheels. I have the standard wheels on my current 7.5 and always wished I had specified better wheels when ordering it 6 years ago. I have a new 8.5 coming next month with several options including Queenstown and DCC (which is mandatory with those wheels) and as I will be keeping the car for a long time, feel it should be specified with everything I wanted. The tax is not ideal, but the first year is in the OTR price and I will then pay the additional £410 a year over standard tax monthly.
Current: Golf GTI 8.5. Pure white/black, pan roof, Queenstown, DCC, HK, Area view, spare wheel
Gone: 2018 Golf GTI 7.5 performance pack with standard spec
Gone: 2016 Golf GTE 7
Gone: 2013 Audi A3 S-Line
Gone: 2010 Golf GT TDI

Remember that you can save yourself a lot of money if you stay under the £40k threshold.

Buying a set of aftermarket 19" wheels is likely to be cheaper than Queenstowns and might stop you paying the extra raod tax each year.

A complicating factor is that any price increase before delivery will push you over anyway......so only you can decide whether to risk it.

Hi there, I was in the same boat as you, didn't want to push the price up over the 40k Mark. Decided to go with the standard 18s have decided to get some aftermarket 19s in the new year with the money I had to spend on them that way the car stays under 40k but get the wheels I want anyways. Also will try and sell the ones it comes with, while not ideal they still look good (not as good as others) and could potentially get a bit of £££ back on them

I’d recommend you don’t sell the standard factory 18” alloys - keep them and if you don’t have room to store them, then get a family member or friend who has got space to store them for you. When the time comes to sell, a car is easier to sell with genuine OEM alloys than a set of aftermarket alloys.

I’ve fitted aftermarket alloys to each of the last three VW’s I’ve owned. I’ve put the original alloys back on prior to selling those cars and then sold the aftermarket alloys. If you choose well, aftermarket alloys will sell, provided they’re in good condition and prepared well for sale. My tips for a successful sale of alloys are in reply #2 in the discussion topic at the link below;

Appreciate the advice. Very novice when it comes to this sort of car, always had a practical car that has just been a "work horse" now with the GTI it for me.

There may not be a massive difference in a xtra £spend whichever way you go.   Queenstown need DCC if bought as an option.  Extra car tax each year seems lots.
But
Option DCC. mind this doesn't breach £40k…..
Buy Queenstown (when available), Tyres, Bolts, Caps, fitting, balancing etc.
Store standard Alloys.
Mmmmm?

Your own number crunching might help you decide. Good luck.

Even metallic paint will now push a standard GTI over the 40k threshold. If you are planning to add other options then you might as well go for what you really want as will be paying the luxury tax anyway.

I got mine at the end of September with just metallic black paint and 18” wheels. The way I look at it is the money I saved on the alloy wheel option, I can spend on some aftermarket wheels and tyres. And will be saving £410+ each year in tax, although I’m sure I won’t keep it long term
