MK7 with Mega Mileage?!
« on: 19 November 2024, 11:30 »
hey everyone,

i am in the market for a mk7, but with a pretty tight budget. Ideally i dont want to spend more than 8k.

One mk7 has come up for sale and it has 146k on the clock. Dealer says its in great condition for the year and mileage and i am not expecting a showroom condition car. But having never owned anything even remotely close to that mileage, am i opening myself up to a life of repair bills and disappointment?

Or if all looks and drives well, i should be ok?

I am prepared to spend some money on maintanence and replacing things as they wear out, so i am not going into this totally blind.

failing that, does anyone have mk7, DSG, 5 door, they want to sell me!

Anything with high mileage/age is going to be something you need to keep spending money on in random intervals with failures at inconvenient times....

You seem to have had a 2017 R back in 2023, what was that like for problems? How many miles did that have on it?

Might save a lot of time if you stated your budget.

Personally I wouldn't go for it but, condition is everything. If it has been doing lots of relaxed motorway miles then it might be better than a sub 100k car that's been thrashed on lots of short journeys. I'd want to see a humongous pile of history showing lots of oil changes and maintenance. If that all checked out then a good long test drive and a thorough inspection. Check out the dealer too. And it would need to be very competitively priced. Also look out for any missed maintenence and any due as the joy of purchase may be quickly lost if soon after you have to do a DSG service, diff service (if applicable), tyres etc.

@fredgroves - i did have a R for a couple of years. It had the water thermostat that always fails done under warranty, otherwise it was faultless. it did only have 13k on the clock when i got it and did about 12k in it.

@watts - i stated a budget of 8k in my first sentence. Which i appreciate is rock bottom for one of these cars. I could spend more, i just rather not.

this is the car in question:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202410145180055?sort=price-desc&advertising-location=at_cars&aggregatedTrim=GTI&body-type=Hatchback&fuel-type=Petrol&make=Volkswagen&model=Golf&postcode=bn13%203ga&price-from=4000&price-to=8000&quantity-of-doors=5&transmission=Automatic&zero-to-60=6_TO_8&fromsra

any opinions and feedback welcome.

The other alternative is spending similar money on a mk5 GTi, which looks like it would yield an older car, but one with less miles.

Having had a look at the ad (not necessarily any more closely than I read your first post , sorry about that!) I can certainly see why you are interested. It looks very good for the age and mileage. Assuming you've done a history check and there are no issues, I would go and have a look. Scrutinise the history and make sure as I mentioned before that you take into account any maintenance costs that are due soon. As a non-PP car, no extra diff maintenance required but check the gearbox. Would be worth seeing if it has DCC as the shocks are expensive to replace.

Something I always look at is number of owners.
This car has had one owner from new. That’s quite something and a very positive aspect in my view.
There won’t be that many of them around.
Go look.

and…….even if you pick up the cost of some “renewals”, at that price you are buying a brilliantly designed car
which will still look as contemporary now as the day it was first registered.
If you buy it, get a personal plate from DVLA and no one will realise the age of the GTI.
The number doesn’t have to stand for anything.
I got my reg which is T? Xxx (five digits) for £180 plus the transfer fee. After nearly 6 years, friends and relatives still keep asking me if I have got a new car recently.
