My fab 3dr 16v is without any front speakers :'(
I've seen Mk2s with simple door pod speakers (where the pockets go I believe) and speakers somewhere behind the dash. However, without spending a fortune on custom door pods, what do people recommend? I noticed GPC sell what they describe as speaker grills for front door pockets, but would these enable easy mounting of speakers? Any thoughts? Thanks

I have the door Mounts and speakers on my golf from mac audio. www.caraudiodirect.com They costed ?95 at the time but not sure if they sell them any more. They came with separate Bass and Treble units to mount on the dash. Sounds pretty good too.
I'd just go for the infinity reference for the dash. It uses some +1 technogy for a larger speaker in the small raidius. Nicer quality and cheaper. ?40.

Oh I forgot to metion that they use 5" speakers and easy to fit. One screw for the door mount and 4 for the speaker. ;)

i have just bought a mk 2 golf gti 8v and i wanted front speakers so i went to the scrap yard and pick up the door pockets with the speaker enclosures allready built in all for 8 quid i now have some jbl speakers for 39.99 that sound pretty good

If you have the grille enclosures then all's well. I take it you don't then you can either: try VAG for the parts - Motolec in Reading advised me they were about ?10 each, try breakers - you'll need a bit of luck to find good ones, or as I did on my Jetta, locate some 4" speakers with square grilles, and carefully remove the door pockets (door card off the car), remove the back of the bin, with a jigsaw carefully cut out the hole, and self-tap the whole assembly back together. To keep the wiring sweet, if you're removing the old 3.5" dash-top speakers, cut off the plug on the speaker, and solder your new run (to the door) to that plug. Therefore if at any stage you find a set of 3.5 replacements (which are out there at around ?40 pair), simple plug-in job. I always try to keep the OE loom intact wherever possible. You can still use the dash-top grilles for tweeter mounting, as has kindly been done on my B/B GTi. Try ebay for speakers as there are some good deals on there.

Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated! Hopefully I'll be able to begin to sort something out this weekend aided by all your experience and good ideas... Now where should I put the 8 disc CD changer?!

on the back of the rear seats is where i have my disc changer

I fitted my disc changer on the side panel in front of the n/s rear light unit in the boot. I cut some MDF, put tippex on the 2 screws holding the side panel in and held the wood up to them to make marks, then drilled holes through the wood and fitted it in front of the panel, using the original holes in the bodywork, and slightly longer screws, then screwed the auto changer to the wood. Saves making lots of holes in the bodywork or accidentally drilling through the outside of the car! And you can still put the seats down without it getting in the way.

My MK2 has a bracket in that position - for the jack/wheelbrace etc, and the wife's MK3 has one too, look at a few if you can, they look big enough for a changer

R6Mart thanks very much for the cd changer idea. I looked at those two screws and though mmm that looks like a good place to put it, but I'd not gone on to think of the mdf idea... What a great site this is! As for the speakers, I think I'll just get some 3.5" dash top ones, any particular recomendations? Final problem I'm having is that I'm really struggling to get the old Alpine radio cassette out (no obvious holed for extraction tools or anything), I tried to remove the glovebox to get behind it but failed (this used to be so easy on old polos...!) Any thoughts???
