Going slightly off topic…and I hope Mk8 forum members will forgive this cheeky interloper, like many of our forum pals I still idly speculate what I would buy next.
So after 4 GTIs, two of them from new, I would buy “used approved” next time. And to ring the changes it would be a 1 owner, low mileage late 7.5 R or a similar 135M.
Why? I’ve never owned awd and 250 plus so that would be sufficient difference to justify a change.
But I’m bloody determined to stay under the 40k VED cliff- edge as a matter of principal.
And, I’ve just turned 73. What’s that about your only as old as the car you’re with? 😂😂😂

If you are buying VW Approved, why would a Mk 8 be potentially a lemon but not a late 7.5?

Because have had GTD (63 plate) Golf R (66 plate) GTI TCR (69 Plate) and presently have Golf R (19 Plate) and not one of them has had a problem, only visit to VW was for servicing. Completely understand the MK 7.5 have and planning to buy can still have issues but it’s a proven model on reliability, especially based on own experience.

The MK8 however has well recorded software/hardware issues and even though a MK 8 would be protected under approved, if it was a software lemon 🍋 with multiple warning errors, some requiring interventions, I still do not want to spend my time going back and forth to VW as many have done in their ownership, and have driving experience tainted by having to do such things.

Of course, I could pick up a perfectly stable and reliable MK 8 but it’s not risk willing to take.

So going to go with what know and love and come back to the MK 8.5 after seeing if all issues have been eradicated and when in my budget 3-4 years from now. Really like the look of MK 8 series, and can see a 8.5 ClubSport or the R in ownership it’s simply the software issues that have me passing.

Ok, I figured you were referring to the software though as you say would (should?) be covered by the warranty. But I can understand you not wanting to do the hokey cokey with your dealer 😁.

But would software issues be covered under VW’s Approved Used warranty? The warranty essentially covers replacement of parts / components that have suffered sudden electrical or mechanical failure, and there’s the usual exclusions and conditions that you get in an insurance based car warranty product. A quick scan read through the warranty booklet and I can’t see that software issues are covered, although it’s quite possible there’s something in the small print that I missed.

Exactly that, know many play it down as they are in it and have no choice, but they were not prewarned, they have had to adjust to the multiple notifications and subsequent VW visits for hardware replacements and awaiting of SW updates.

I am prewarned, and definitely do not want to walk into the same experience.

Just configured the new MK 8.5 GTI, really like its BHP increase, my 128ti has 265BHP and its more than quick enough, and really like its paint and wheel options, going to be some nice looking and well specced used GTI out there in 3-4 years times.

Just configured it. I would be happy with the base spec which comes with a lot of standard equipment + Dolphin Grey paint. That also keeps it below the £40k mark.

Whilst I'm really enjoying the 7.5 GTI I purchased a couple of months ago, I'm actually regretting it now as the 8.5 seems a great deal and the 7.5 prices were pretty high! I'll have to wait a couple of years now as don't want to take a hit on the 7.5 already.
