Hi @jon87

Yes you are dead right. It gone down from about £39.500 to £38,900

Also I note on the press release it says heated front seats and rear camera are standard. (but then I fancy 360 camera now, so that would be £325, I think.

It gives a bit more room to play with to nip under £40,000 tax limit

I'm trying to think of all of the bits you could option on the Mk8:

HK
Coloured paint
Wheels
HUD
Winter pack 1 (heated front seats) or pack 2 (rear heated seats)
DCC
Some other extra safety thing (think I've got that)
Spare wheel
Reversing camera
NavPro (which gave you literally nothing in the UK!)

So for the 8.5 it will be (price guesses)

HK - 1k
Colour - 500-1k
Wheels - 500-1k
HUD - 300
Winter Pack 2 - 300
Extra safety thing - 300
Spare Wheel - 200
360 camera - 300

You've got 1099 to play with to sneak under 40k.... my guess is a lot of (cheap) colour choice + 360 camera cars going to be ordered!

BTW my mk8 with all of the extras was £37k RRP... so not too bad inflation really on the Mk8.5 ironically

Oh and also, what does this mean for clubby base price?
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

I played this game with the R that I ordered it failed as it took two years to get delivered and rose in price putting it well into the 40k bracket regardless. It’s the price the day before registration that counts not the ordered price.

Absolutely right ajmoir36, you’ve got to factor in at least a couple price increases with VW’s usual long build times.

It’s better than that, as I understand it, it’s £38900 OTR. Therefore you’d have about £2,200 to play with to take it up to £40k limit.

Trouble is, as @ajmoir36 and @Exonian have said, VW never built then very speedily and the price rises will then screw you over after all that minute planning.

It’s a nice idea but risky. Anyway, even £2200 might not be enough to get the spec you really want (or the one that is in my head)

And presumably you can expect price rises twice a year and each time it will be at least 5%....and 5% on 38k (just a rough figure) is £1900....

Definitely some scope here for a nasty shock.

Probably your best bet if you want one imminently would be to buy from the initial dealer stock which will arrive in September (my guess)

Obviously these are pre-built cars but there will be a range of specs to choose from (like I did!)

Of course it might not be exactly the spec you wanted but at least you could guarantee the sub 40k price!

On the flip side, you'd be buying (like me) the first production vehicles... with all of the fun VW have with that. Although maybe just a facelift might not be so risky (my 7.5 was literally first off the run too)

I am personally hoping the MK 8.5 will finally push down the prices for the performance MK 7.5 which are remaining stubbornly high and with some at top end even merging with early MK 8 GTI, R and Clubsport.

So hoping those in MK 7.5 who have been waiting on facelift will over the next 12 months start trading in and push down the used car prices, by a few thousand.

I will be looking for as late plate and lowest mileage MK 7.5 Performance in that timeframe, and expect to pay the top of the prices, but just be nice if that top price has another few thousand push down by the MK 8.5 release.

Quite like all that seen of the MK 8.5, Clubsport and R would interest, and will be watching its reliability closely over next 3 years, as imagine it will eventually replace one of our then 2 x MK 7.5 and agree fredgroves guidance, prices will definitely rise and so get your sub 40k car early!

You cannot imagine Labour raising that threshold, more likely to reduce it so if have hope the £40k should by logic go up at some point due to that baseline being in existence when these cars were starting out £10k less, forget that, car owners will still have target on back for easy money.

I, on the other hand, am personally hoping the Mk8.5 will NOT push down prices of the 7.5 for obvious reasons!
Reassuring to hear they remain stubbornly high
I’m joking of course, we will all have different circumstances and plans. My plan is to keep mine for at least another two years.

yes, get that! but actually think there is a difference between buying and selling privately.

I am really referring to VW Approved, where the prices remain quite high, £25k + for the best low mileage MK 7.5 R and GTI's but you do get the warranty, which for me is worth the extra outlay. I would like that to get down to the £22K mark in about 12 months.

Bought wife a MK 7.5 Golf R last September, well specced, low mileage, for just short of £25k VW Approved (Did actually get an above average figure on our exchange, so our cost for change made it a better deal overall than anywhere elsewhere)

I doubt could get more than £20k privately now, and likely £18-19K in exchange.

Think the private sale value will not be overly affected as its always more attractive than forecourt, if willing to take the risks, but imagine trade in and selling via Motorway and WBAC would take a hit if the MK 8.5 brought more MK 7.5 to market as exchanges (those who have held on the MK 8 and are more ready now)

But if you want to buy a decent, relatively low mileage Golf R or GTI on VW approved, you will still see an asking price we paid in September, and if you look on Autotrader, you can get early MK 8 R and Clubsport for same prices as late MK 7.5

Personally think its testament to how good a car the MK 7.5 is, I missed my GTI TCR so much, that went and bought that MK 7.5 Golf R just to have one back in the family again while see the company lease out on this BMW 128Ti, and when that ends in 15 months, will be getting a MK 7.5 of my own, as cannot trust getting a MK 8 lemon, and MK 8.5 will be out of my price band for at least 3 years.

Reason state out of my price band, is turning my back on lease and finance, its way too expensive now, now market has normalised, there too much depreciation on finance, and so it will be 3-5 year used for cash from herein for me.

Do buy cars expecting to lose money, but not prepared to take the biggest part of that curve from new.

Definitely see me in a MK 8.5 in 3-4 years time, probably a fully specced R or Clubsport to see me through next 3-4 years.

If you are buying VW Approved, why would a Mk 8 be potentially a lemon but not a late 7.5?
