I've been trying to find the answer to this for a while now, so hopefully someone can shed some light.
Why does the mk5 Gt TDi 170 have a DPf but the 140 doesn't?

Some crazy EU law would be my guess? Because the 170 produces more carbon it now has to have one, something like that?

It is all to do with emmissions. 170 needed a DPF to comply. It was a bit of an afterthought which is why they can be problematical. The later CR engines were designed to work with DPFs, so problems are far less common.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
