Title: Android auto and spotify
Post by: Phuture on 15 June 2019, 11:07
Picked up the new car yesterday and spending time this weekend getting to know all the tech and controls.

I'm using spotify via USB and android auto.

I cant find a way to fast forward or rewind the track that's playing? Either via the steering wheel or the main screen. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, when playing a track from a playlist, is there a way to then go back and scroll through the playlist? Seems to always go back to the main spotify menu meaning you need to find the playlist again, then scroll all the way back down to the track u was last at. Bit of a ballache it seemed.

Cheers!

So after some reading and research it seems that as a safety feature, android auto will only allow you to see the next 10 tracks in a playlist, what!

Hi, I got mine last week. Still trying to suss out the android auto myself. I've an Xperia phone and vw cable, been a bit temperamental connecting it to th infotainment system each time I get in the car. I have been using my stock app on the phone rather than Spotify and it has been fine so far so can't really comment on Spotify sorry!  It seems easy enough to navigate the Artist's and playlists i have stored, only thing I couldn't see was a shuffle songs option on playlists. Further practice needed. I think there is a new android auto on its way so let's hope that's an improved version 👍😀

You might be able to see more if the car is stationary. AA knows if you're moving or not, and removes some limits such as the "focus on the road" message.

Not sure if FF/RW work at all, can't say I've ever tried it

There are all sorts of safety limits imposed by Google for AA apps.

Some types of app its not a problem, but the ones where it tries to display a large list of things can be really annoying. iPlayer is one that I encounter, as is TuneIn radio. My favourites lists are impossible to navigate while moving, you have to stop the vehicle or be moaned at.

I can't see any newer versions of AA offering much different...

Yeah I fear even the new version of AA coming this summer will still have the issues. Totally unusable for me with spotify.

Can anyone confirm if you can do it with CarPlay, and whether you can FF tracks using the steering wheel or even on the main screen?

Thanks Fred, will take a look at that.

Mad tho, at the very least id expect to have like a slider on screen to move the track along, or be able to do it by holding the prev/next button on the steering wheel. Seems like a crazy UX decision.

Another annoyance is not having time elapsed/remaining... it's there on bluetooth!

I tend to use Android Auto but I will have a look at Carplay for ffwd etc on my way home.

On mine with android auto running, I can skip the tracks and FF/RW using the steering wheel controls

Really? Interesting...

Are you opening any app on your phone before connecting? I can skip tracks, but cant fast forward. The whole not being able to scroll through all tracks in a playlist is silly, even when stationary.

I'm not opening the app. My Bluetooth is on and the android auto app on phone seems to open automatically  once the car is connected to Bluetooth.

I then plug in the usb cable to the phone and click the app button on infotainment system and I'm on my way!

I tried Apple Carplay on my way home and the interface isn't as nice looking but it does have the time elapsed/remaining and you can ffwd using the screen and steering wheel controls.

However, I couldn't see what track was coming next (will try again though) so not sure it would work for your playlists.

Cheers for looking andy! When your looking at a playlist, say in spotify or something, does it list all the songs and let u scroll through them?

I've just checked whilst parked on the drive and it works as you say - I could look at all 33 tracks in the playlist by pressing back from the first image. Will need to check when driving to make sure it is the same...

I thought that might be the case, I think the list restriction only applies to android auto, it's a google security thing... I'm gonna try CarPlay on an old iPhone 5 I've got. Just updating iOS now. It's a pain because using spotify and listening to music in the car is a big deal for me and having an android phone is going to make that experience an annoying one  :undecided:

No issues on the move either - in fact there's no "focus on the road messages" so think you're right that it's a google thing.

The only issue with using your old iphone for music (unless you're transferring your sim) is that you won't be able to make and receive calls, as Carplay and Android Auto overule bluetooth.

Yeah I did think that, although was thinking I could maybe connect the old iphone via cable and just leave in the car with all spotify playlists downloaded. Then connect my daily phone via bluetooth for calls etc... who knows if that would work. Just about to try it. Either that or change to an new iphone for my daily... such a pain, damn u google

Yup cant connect bluetooth of daily phone and have iphone connected via cable.

But, the whole spotify experience is much better, might have to look at getting an iphone as a daily

... and then you'll start playing with Apple Music, realise it's VERY good and immediately bin off Spotify, just like I did...

Apple Music for me has totally replaced Spotify and Amazon Music. Primarily because the app ALWAYS works, 3rd party apps can be quite buggy on CarPlay (Amazon Music is a nightmare!).

Hahaha, im in deep with spotify though mate, so much music added to playlists, dunno if i could be assed to start again!

I actually love android, have had iphones in the past, but these restrictions in regards to navigating bigger playlists and ff/rw is just a deal breaker, and very annoying!

Given the grief you went through to get Dynaudio, it would be a shame if you couldn't take full advantage of that though...

Haha, to be fair ive been impressed with the audio quality! Love the dynaudio, was defo worth waiting for (just need to get the settings right, it can be almost too bass heavy at times).

I think bottom line is, im gonna need to get an iphone for my daily so that i have internet, phone etc as well as music. For now ive just got an old iphone 5 that im gonna leave connected for carplay, just means i cant use any data/phone stuff for the moment.

iPhone hunting now... the expense continues lol

Getting a dual dashcam fitted in a couple of weeks so will let u know how that goes :)

Not sure but power your phone by cigarette lighter and use bluetooth for Spotify. I think info comes up on the dash.
