Title: When to service
Post by: 2007GTI on 13 June 2019, 12:45
I used to be meticulous with getting services done on time, but recently as I haven't done so many miles I'm wondering if I can push it a bit. It is out of warranty and 5 years old.

Last serviced in June last year at 22k, the car now has 27k, which is obviously low mileage for 1 year, I was thinking of pushing it to 30k for a service which will be sometime towards the end of the year.

I'm not interested in the long term servicing debate, this is not about money, it is about serving a car that's done such low mileage seems like a waste.

Thoughts?

For the sake of an oil change, why wouldn't you? The fact it's out of warranty is more of a reason to service it than not!

I also drive a low annual mileage - 6-7k miles per year - and my car’s also out of warranty. I’m a firm believer of getting it serviced when it’s due. Irrespective of annual mileage I’ve driven, components and consumables can degrade over time, and it’s an opportunity for the car to be checked over to ensure everything’s OK.

I would do it, as you say it's not about the money, oil degrades over time also it's good to have the underside inspected incase something needs attending to like a split cv boot. My OH's Lupo is 16 years old now and has less than 50k on it but still gets serviced every year. I also think that come resale time a buyer will be impressed that a car has been looked after properly regardless of low annual mileage.

In almost exactly the same boat (well, car) as my GTI is 5 yeays old and had 22k on last service, just about getting on to 28k miles now and I've just booked it in. The 5th year is a minor service anyway so she's getting a treat - brake fluid done at the same time lol.

It's worth doing it when it's expected to be done - even with our low mileages.

Find a decent independent garage and get them to do it.... probably half the price of VW stealers!

I've always worked on the basis of an oil & filter change every year or 10k whichever comes first, regardless of what manufacturers say. Got 180k out of last car.

I use the dealers 3yo+ cheap servicing not much more than an Indy charges.

Car is probably over serviced having had 5 done in 25k.

Mine had done 6k at its second service.
Low mileage is no excuse to skimp on servicing.
And that’s coming from someone who hates spending money on cars if it can be avoided. (Unless it’s mods)

mines a 2016 car , done 800 miles but had 3 oil changes , a quality oil change costs around £70 and is so easy to do on the tsi , worth doing yourself
