I recently sold my Mk3 Gti and acquired this for the price of 4 new tyres , the guy needed to get it out of where it was stored and had nowhere for it so for a few hundred quid it was mine, its an American spec, Canadian import to Ireland, 1987 1.8 16valve,
spotless shell, with no rust, the engine needs finishing and the wiring tidied up under the dash, its quirky and i think a keeper...
anyway c+c's welcome
thanks

American Mk2 GTIs weren't called golfs or rabbits, they were just GTIs.
Same with the MK5.

Welcome.

No just a mk2 Gti sold in America, exported to Canada, and imported to Ireland

Not great pics of the headcloth but it is textured black which was also pointed out was unusual, along with a few other things such as the high level 3rd brake light, rear beam, and there are points under the car which resemble towing eyes for jigging should it be involved in a bang,

Thanks lads, unfortunately i'm in Ireland, cant see myself getting to the uk this year, but maybe next year alright
-
Doh! Should have spotted that, nevermind pal its one for me to keep an eye on anyway.

I would imagine there would be a lot of interest in the uk, interesting car and a real find.

I managed to pick up a bonnet in the right colour, thanks to Tom(jetta gtd) on vagdrivers, i will line it up properly when i have someone to give me a hand as i fitted it on my own....It should come up ok with a bit of a polish and wax, the main thing is it's straight and undamaged....I also have to fit the grill mesh to the vents in the bonnet

At last I can update this thanks to jv, cheers for moving it and pm'ing me John.....
I was just out having a quick look around it and came across these numbers and stamps in the recess that the boot lid closes into, it seems it was manufactured in Mexico, and would i be right in thinking the other stamp is a production number ? it just gets more interesting the more i look around it :)

She doesnt scrub up too badly for a car that last saw the road in 1996 (looks good from a distance B) ), im hoping to get her running this week all going well, seeing as the silver 1 is gone i have a few quid to throw at her, and im sure like a typical woman she'll have no problem in spending it for me

Nice find... same thing when I was sourcing a grille, only paid a tenner for mine but it had a slight split in the plastic around the ring for a headlight, was covered when headlights in so bit of hot glue to make sure it didn't get any worse, job done.

It never rains but it pours, I got a text from a guy on my local forum to say he has 1 locally, so i will have 2 now, even better

Bonus!... Yeah I spend so much time not being able to find something and then finding loads after I buy one. I hate i when thigs come up dead cheap and you either miss them or not in a position to buy them.
Just missed out on a mk1 golf chopped for a trailer for £43!

Swapped a Bonnet Bra
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd254/miniireland/r.jpg)
Brought it home, removed the filler piece from another grille I had, stuck a flap wheel on my cordless and removed all of the paint to the bare metal, cleaned it down primed it and Aerosol painted it Tornado Red, stick it on and hey presto, "CORRECT GRILLE" B) Next thing to do is rub down and prime and paint the VW badge matte black ......

Looks odd to me only because it's US spec though. You've done well to keep it how it was made... A totally different OEM.
Have you not ever been tempted to put Euro gear on it?

Does this have air con?
Judging by the size of that rad, yes, it was standard on usa spec I believe, will need all the seals changing to cope with modern gas as well.

Well he's already said its the rad for cars with aircon, just wasn't sure if it actually the rest of the gear fr it. Nice thing to have in a mk2!
I found a mk1 with aircon once, albeit retrofitted.

still waiting on parts from BBT but this arrived yesterday
American plate, thanks to Trevor at Eireplates.com, just stuck on with double sided tape for photo, it was nice to see the boot lid hadnt been butchered when i took the original plate off :D

As are the huge pipes in the engine bay.
Like the project, don't like eighties VW US-style, especially the side stripes and the 14" wheels with balloon tyres!
Does it have a KR motor, or is it a lower compression engine than the KR and does the poor thing have a cat?
-
very clean. Interesting how that ended up in the UK :nerd:

the side stripes wheels and tyres all add to the 80's originality, and as for the engine it is indeed a KR with the strangulating cat, the wheels and suspension will be changed in time, but the stripe will stay as it adds to the quirkiness of it all....

Pedant. The question remains the same: how did a US spec Golf end up in Ireland?

Pedant. The question remains the same: how did a US spec Golf end up in Ireland?
it belonged to a member of the band Bagatelle who bought it while on tour there in 1996 and had it shipped over, but never did anything else with it, so 15 years later when he had to get it out of the storage it was in, he had nowhere for it, i bought it from him without even seeing it, all i knew was it had a 16v engine and aircon, i was going to use it for parts, but was pleasently surprised when i went to view it......

nothing much really done, im having trouble sourcing a 4th centre cap for the wheels sou I sourced a set of small centres for now, until i do eventually find 1....

But
I came out to a shattered rear window Sunday morning, no sign of any stones on the ground or grass around the car, so im a little baffled as to what happened, i dont need this expense at the moment but hey ho

Got a glass sorted local to me, anyway this is a job I dont want to have to do again in a hurry, ive done it before with mini rear windows, taking them out to cut holes in the rear shelf for speakers so I knew the principles of ropeing in glass, but of course when I went to look for my roll of builders twine it was nowhere to be found, so i had the tedious job of using 2 flat blade screwdrivers all the way around the rubber, but it went in without too much bother in the end,
excuse the bad photos they were taken on my phone , it was bright when I started and dark when I finished...... i have to get some proper rubber double sided tape for the high brake light, which i'll do at a later stage but atleast the car is secure and dry again....

Another little breakthrough, I was given some information today which lead me to the original family owners of this, It turns out I am only the 3rd owner, with 2 brothers before me, it was sold in Georgia in 1987, went to Canada from there, spent a few years there and was then shipped to and registered in the UK, and eventually ended up over here being registered and driven up until summer 1996 when there was some sort of engine trouble, i think the belt broke, anyway it was given to a mechanic to repair but he went out of business or something like that, the original owner took it back and sent it off to a breakers yard in Bray back in 1998, Luckily the book was never sent off and the car is still registered and the last known tax is July 1996, Anyway he has agreed to look for whatever paperwork he may have for the car, and also has a load of old photos of it, i've to call him Monday as he wants to see it again after all these years.....
This makes it a little bit more special for me now to be able to find out the full history of the car.
-
A little more,
The original owner came to see the car this evening, and to my surprise had the registration document with him (happy days), anyway, a couple of pics from March 1994 when it was in the uk for a while, (with the original front bumper :( )

JULY 2012
Lost my BBS split rim virginity (sounds painful lol) this evening, I've been quietly looking for a set for a while now but any that came up were either overpriced or damaged etc, anyway with a significant birthday approaching my missus and kids bought me these as part of my present, that made Hubby/Daddy very happy......
