Title: The Blue Wagon has left the Building.
Post by: JC on 03 July 2009, 18:42
Well it took less than 24 hours since the polo was sold.

New wheels are on the drive in the form of a  WAGON

J Reg,  61k mile FSH verified 2.0 CL

returned 37.6 mpg on the journey home today,( on the fully functioning MFA)

like driving in an armchair on a canalboat ( its as long as one. )

with the wind in what hair i have thru the operational electric tilt n slide roof.

just dumped it on the drive for now - the call of the club is strong and BEER.

So, piccies from the seller ( camera phone ) with the only real bodywork issue that i can find

and from the camera when i got home including a WEDGE of history all a a dealer - its an Ex doctors car , one year it only did 1500 miles

First mods already planned, Plates once i have swapped my private reg on and yellow head lite film

then rims.

then DIVORCE

I nearly got a B3 Passat 2.0 8v but the interior was in terrible condition, bits were falling off all over the place! Outside is was alright, needed a few bits seen to but overall ok. Was fantastic to drive though  Looking forward to seeing this develop!

I think fitting them to your Passat is a dumb-f*ck idea.

£10 says they must weigh 10-15kg, so they'll junk the any handling that might still be lying about.  You'll split the sidewalls on the cr@p tyres on any corrugation you find in the road and the limp-wristed 115bhp lump in the front will have trouble rotating them in the first place, as they look like they'll have a higher rolling radius than the current wheels.

Have you bought them yet then?

They are not that heavy, I had a set, very high quality wheel.

rolling radius would be the same the standard fitment, unlike the bbs fitted at the mo.

115, is it meant to have that many  :lipsrsealed:

No, just viewing  :lipsrsealed:

[Harry Enfield 'considerably richer than you bloke'] I think you'll find your 'box is a cable-changer.  Unless you're proposing to get a 16V 'box fitted (which is quite leggy), you'll be making a 'rod' for your own back with that idea [/Harry Enfield 'considerably richer than you bloke']

I hope you applied the right brummie accent in your head.

Wot you need is some sort of ETKA monkey to tell you whether there are any shorter final drive cable changers out there which might suit.

Thing is, if you're taking the gearbox out anyway......

Well, had a day off, so decided that i would treat the old girl,

Job 1. Oil and Filter change, - Easily sorted.

Job 2. New Discs n pads on the front - Nice shiney Brembo's

Everything came apart easily, even the discs retaining screws came out

Then i thought, may aswell drop the old girl a tad . - HOW i wish i hadnt

Both fronts were fine, crub screw undone and they turned by hand after a quick soak with lube

OSR was a bit more of an issue, but after a bit of APPLIED PRESSURE it soon freed off,

THEN THE NIGHTMARE - the NSR was seized SOLID

C spanner was useless, ALL the variations of C spanner and Union connection spanners from work, chain wrench & strap wrench ALL FAILED

So it was time to take the tripod for a drive   :lipsrsealed:

It eventually gave way using a somewhat unusual tool for the job, but thank fook for late night opening halfrauds.

down abbout 20 mill front and 40 mill going by the pre and post measurements, with at least 50% of the coilies to go

but i RUB badly going over the speed humps and on and off the driveway

oh and I painted the VW badge black

Well what a day,

MOT - Passed - result  - well of sorts,  what it didnt find is the cause of a knock i have from the NSF strut / leg but hey, a pass with no advisories all the same .

then it was home to play musical bumpers

front done no bother, looking good even if i couldnt get the in bumper lights to work .  Summat to address later.

Rear came off easily enough apart from getting covered in 19 years worth of crud .   Got the replacement with the VERY HEAVY towbar in place and lined up and the bolts just in loose.  Then it started to go wrong.  :lipsrsealed:

For those that dont know, the bolts that hold the assembly on go horizontal from in the boot wells into fully enclosed chambers into captive nutz on the assembly itself . ( yes - you can see where its going )  2 bolts per side, just using a rachet ring spanner and i get a feeling that we dont seem to be getting anywhere.  I know i will try one on the other side . AT NO POINT was excessive force required.  But yes, the Bolts were just spinning, the nutz had made a break for freedom, and I know had a bolt either side with NO WAY  whatsoever to get at the Nutz.

And yes, the bumper was flopping about like a big floppy thing .

Thankfully, after some Chuffmeistering, the bolts and now removed, the old bumpers removed and the old girl is back to her original glory . 4 hours wasted - but hey ho, she's got 12 months ticket

yeah  my mate was the same to rob .

then he stood and watched the engineering bodging skills go to work

amazing what wedging spanners under the head of a bolt and an impact gun can achieve

just been out and swapped the vr6 passat top mounts over, checked the seating of the springs etc and the knocking seems to have gone.

Fingers crossed

Hairy muff :)

I've noticed the centre of your wheels is different to mine.. the bit that goes in from the spokes towards the wheel bolts.. on your wheels it's more obvious whereas mine curves in gradually.. if you get me?

well after a bit of a disaster when fitting the rear wheels cos the rear hub nut cover came thru the hole too far to allow the badge / centre cap to be fitted,

and a call to CADES direct with a far from helpful reply of SPACE the wheels out

me and a lad at work got our heads together - then " sourced a very handily sized round object and Ta Da.

so the fronts now look like

and the rears

FAR from ideal I know, but i wasnt going to be running round with the hub nut cover sticking thru on the rears.

id be a arse kisser if i said otherwise re the rims, i just think they just look way out of place, too small, too much rubber, Gold against the blue, its all wrong, dare i say they even look a bit halfords.. i know they are the same as joes but his jsut dont look like yours at all

a set of 928's would have been champion on your car, as u say each to their own, was just my 2p, i didnt post when i first saw then as i thought id give them a chance..  cannot be no more fair than that and i certainly didnt post to cause a argument with any of the goon squad

I am 99% sure that someone on either VWVortex or E38 did a coilover service, pretty sure it was E38. I'll ask around for you.

not really, but i had a VERY god photo guide from someone who had done it before.

the fabric could be better but i did it alone and its a LARGE roof lining

thankfully the camo effect hides the few wrinkles i couldnt get oiut before the glue dried VERY well

all in, removal, glueing etc refitting took about 4 hours

My dad hated it when I got a car.. he would have much preferred me to continue the family tradition of bikes!

I didn't because I like the sports bikes or trial bikes, so not really practical and would cost enough to mean that I couldn't have a car as well :(

What engine has yours got.  This one on autotrader is a gutless 2.0 petrol.

Well after much soul searching, a LOT of advice from people & then getting  3 yes 3 signs from the car  . . . .

i have had to remove it from sale

&

Take it off the road for the foreseeable future   :embarassed:

the signs

1, an oil leak - still to be investigated - but the 500+ miles i did in it at the weekend and the oil has dropped from max to just above minimum - and i can't sell summat like that

B, Rear wheel bearing (s) - to say i had to have the stereo on LOUD to cover up the noise on the way home is an understatement

iii, the alternator light now won't go out - again summat to investigate

added to the tax expiring in 2 weeks & the insurance the month after I have conceeded defeat and am mothballing it

the plan - dont know - will need to look into the problems and go from there to be fair

It will get robbed of its stereo, maybe even the Reg Plate but the money i will save from Tax and reducing the insurance to garage cover only will at least free up the cash to fix the easier of the 3 problems.

Prepare for a sad lookin 'ssat tucked away on some ropey old wheels very soon

NO!

well heres the thing - no one wants to buy it in the SPEC i wanna sell it .
now its started playing me up
so even if i fix it all up - i still wont be able to sell it

so, i can rob key bits for the saloon,
sell the rest - as a lot of parts are becoming hard to source.
end up with a nice saloon once finished and no hassle of having to sell the repaired motor.

If not bring it down here - I'm off all week and haz plans that can include rear wheel bearings and diagnosis.

Mr P's probably coming down to assist with cutting down and planking up some big trees, too.

well we all like a shiney bitz shot - so

then it was a quick road test and the whining noise has gone :afro:

then is was time to make a decision , and a few quid as needs must at the moment so

and back to standard lights

then the balancing act commenced

but she is up, and SOLID on the ramps

next up, oil loss  and battery light illumination investigation  :undecided:

and is officially SORN now too - Roll on 2011  :lipsrsealed:

I'd say keep it since it's such a tidy example of a well modded B3. Even if you must sell then sell it complete and original rather than breaking.

Slightly off topic, in the pic below how did you get the car on the ramps like that?? They're facing different directions :undecided:
