Would you change it?
« on: 20 March 2013, 23:46 »
Alright so my golf is curently on 143.216 miles. Acording to my service history book the last (and only) belt change was in 03/2006 at 74,952 miles.

So on the original interval recomendation of 80k its got 11.7k miles left even though its over-due time wise by a couple of years.

Its worth noting i paid £600 for the car in november and have had no isues touch wood. the cambelt change is around £320 so half the value of the car. its a 1999 agu turbo.

what would you do!?

Replace it asap, still cheaper than replacing the engine if it snaps, it is due every 4yrs or 40k.

40k seems crazy. My old mans 02 focus just had its first cambelt at.. 130k! and hes always booting it.

If it did snap the car would be broken. Wish i could do it myself

Your about 10k past when it should have been done mate.

Get it changed quick, cause as Wayne said, if it snaps your engine is FUBAR!

As already mentioned it should be changed every 60k or 4 years, which ever comes soonest. On that basis it should have been done in 2010 :lipsrsealed:

I'd get it changed asap to be honest, I'm doing mine this weekend...car has only done 68k but it'll be it's 3rd cambelt change (done in 2005, 2009 and now 2013).

You could run it to the ground and then shell out of another car to run into the ground but at £600 a time that'll be a false economy. In my opinion you're better spending on it now and running it for longer, happy in the knowledge that it's been done.

Yer ive decided to bite the bullet and book it in for next week..

James, much better compared to the quad cam V6 mg i had before, and tbh its one of the best petrol cars on fuel ive ever owned! But its standard, sure with some dumpvalve and turbo noises mpg would drop like a stone

Do it yourself. Get either a genuine kit or a Conti-Tech kit with the dampener. Brilliant kits.

Where abouts are you? I'm pretty quick at them now.
