Wheel warranty replacement
« on: 12 February 2014, 14:33 »
Keep an eye on your wheels folks.  Just had one replaced due to 4 spots of alloy corrosion appearing under the lacquer layer - all occurring where a spoke meets the rim.  Only 4 months old.  Other 3 wheels are unmarked so far.

Cheers for the heads up, is this the standard 18s?

Whiteworm corrosion was the scourge of the mk5 GT, the last VW I had with polished alloy wheels. Mine went after 2 years.

Don't suppose you've got any pictures to look out for?

I'm tempted to replace the standard alloys with some bbs if they start with the whiteworm carry on!

It almost looks like the white part of bird sh!te, and the lacquer bubbles up slightly. I might have some pics from my MK5 wheels - i'll have a looksy.

Photo on this thread of very bad case

I have such a filthy mind – just laughed out loud on reading that thorough thread, at the mention of the “rim king”.

Rim king...don't get me started .

Sorry, been offline since posting this.  They are the standard 18's.  I did keep a picture but can't manage to insert it - will have another go.

I have 3 small areas of whiteworm around the centre cap on the front drivers side wheel (mk6 GTD with 18" Charlestons). I'm OCD about they way my car looks, and the wheels are cleaned and sealed / protected regularly. Noticed the whiteworm for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

I've yet to take it in to the dealer to get them to (hopefully agree) to replace FOC under warranty - car is 31 months old so still under warranty and I've owned it from new.

If they suggest the wheel has been damaged when it's been removed from the car, it's never been removed since the car was built, unless the dealer removed it during the 2nd service!

Whether or not I get a replacement under warranty, I've been seriously thinking of getting a set of BBS and some decent tyres (still on original sh!te Bridgestones). If I do this, then I'll store the Charleston's until the time comes to sell the car, when I'll put them back on, and transfer the BBS wheels to the new car - if they fit. If they don't, then there's always a ready market for genuine, well looked after BBS wheels, so I wouldn't anticipate having any problems selling them.
