Right chaps,
As most of you are aware, the black side trims or edging strips on the mk3 golf side skirts are a pain in the a$$.
They are black plastic with a metal backing strip. The metal rusts and not only causes the skirt to turn a funny shape, it can fall off.
So, what can you do about it?
Firstly, DON'T buy second hand.
They will be rusty if they are original, just might not be able to see it yet.
They are still available from VW new. About £25 a side.
These are the part numbers:
Drivers Side: 1HO 853 986
Passengers Side: 1HO 853 985
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/8-853-60.gif)
They are number 13 on this picture from ETKA.
They are the same 3dr or 5dr, and come with the rear end piece.
They are just push fit, so you don't need any screws or fittings.
The front end piece is seperate, and is around from £6.
1H0 853 995 for front left
1H0 853 996 for front right
The pic of wagenstad shows these rivetted on
Edited as I had used LHD VAGCAT so the number are now right

Nice one! This gets bought up alot so I must remember this thread is here!
-
yeah i've noticed . All this info was here already, just collated it all together

Great little bit of advice, hopefully this will now stop the endless torrents of threads about rusty side skirt covers
-
good one...now can you do one so people use the search function (as I still bet there will be a few posts about them this week!)

Thanks guys, just picked up mine from VW dealer yesterday - £26.71 each plus VAT.
When you say push fit, did it involve some form of 'persuader' as in a mallet?
Struggling to get mine on.

I wouldn't recommend hitting them with a mallet! Just a firm push is all that should be required :undecided:
-
Give the skirt a good clean beforehand, the section affixed to the car was full of dirt and rubbish when I replaced mine, and could be stopping the new trim from clipping in properly in your case
-
spray some silicone lubricant onto the clip track first.
-
WD40 used - popped on a treat both sides.
Thanks all round.

Edited to include the covers at the bottom of the front arches

In case anyone needs any other bodykit parts this link gives you a pic as previously shown on this thread but with a complete breakdown of all the parts and part numbers.
To hold the plastic strip on that is originally held on with double sided tape i can thoroughly recommend servo tape like they use on radio controlled model cars etc (beware of the cheap stuff and the poundshop stuff. It do'nt last and much of the cheaper stuff is too thick.See :-

Amazing what using the search function can do! Hopefully have mine sorted in a weeks.

Just ordered mine for the passenger side - VW Jardine Motors, Letchworth quoted me £38. Also, she knew exactly what it was by the part number and said I've got them the wrong way round. Apparently, 985 is the passenger and 986 is the driver.

I've swapped it now, thanks

got such a dilemna in my head about this...
I'm having my rust sorted over the next month or so (either before or after the BH weekend & TRAX) but in serious debate with myself about the arches..
Somehow I think removing the arch covers and sideskirts will make it lose the GTi look.. that it wouldn't feel original anymore..
but then I think about the water and dirt trapped against it and how i'd probably end up having to have the arches done a second time years down the line..
I suppose I'll see what they're like when I drill the rivets out and pull them off (nervous.. :lipsrsealed:) and then know if i want to keep em on. I know the bottom of the arches where it meets the side skirts needs some attention, as its very crunchy, so will have em done with the sills..
I just don't know :undecided:

I paid nearly £500 to get my sills done. Stuff putting that trim back on. Infact I have sold it all. Looks far better all smooth in my opinion. Thats what I like about the VR6 Highline, no trim.
Paying out to get rust done you would be insane to put the trim back on. However am sure some would disagree. Can't understand why VW decided to put it on in the first place. Hated it when it was on.
Reason why most keep the trim on is they are nervous to take it all off and see what is lurking. If they did and then paid a small fortune sorting the rust out doubt very much they would put it back on. My car now looks 100% better even more so with the new Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 coming

I've just obtained the drivers side for my car , should I have bought the metal strip aswell?
