Headlights are rubbish
« on: 28 October 2003, 22:49 »
Hi

Sorry if this has been posted before - couldn't see anything obvious when I searched.

I've got a PD150 and am really pleased with it...except for the headlights which I think are dreadful.  They just don't light up the road far enough ahead to see anything - and in the country it's positively dangerous! :(

Has anyone else found this? My friend upgraded his headlights (not to Xenon) but doesn't reckon there's much difference.

Can the headlights be adjusted? Or do I have to spend ???s on Xenon bulbs to improve the situation?

Thanks!

It depends on how naughty you are.

I 'know someone' who has upgraded the bulbs to, erm, not exactly legal ones.

Standard headlight bulbs are 55w mine his are 100w! and he has set them up so that they don't blind people, but rather they cast a nice wide, long beam pattern on the ground.

They are also almost white, so along with his super-white LED sidelight bulbs, they give real good night time vision, and a much better look, too.

Both sets of bulbs, including postage, would set you back approx ?60.
Apparently.

Ok, cheers - looks like I'm not the only one who thinks they're cr@p.
I'll look at buying some perfectly legal ones!  ;)

kniterider - I disagree! I think they're sh*& on full beam, and not much better dipped.  They're really low on dipped, even with the full beam adjusted on zero.  Of course, mine may be set up badly, but I've only had the car for 3 months (since new), so I'd be surprised if the alignment is out.

Full beam is the real let down, however - I had a Pug 206 CC before this, and the full beam was leagues better than the Golf.  I find that although the bulbs seem bright, they've got *no* distance on them at all - fine for motorways, but as soon as you're in the country you just can't see far enough ahead to judge corners etc.

I agree... I've had 3 X 1.8Ts now and though the car is great I'm forever going to full beam on country roads otherwise can't see bends early enough. Brake dust aplenty!
