Title: Sams Scruffy Mk3!
Post by: rcsammy on 10 August 2010, 20:28
i hope this is the right place to put this topic, if not please move it :)

so i bought this 1992 1.4 CL a few weeks ago for £160, no tax or test and came with a couple of sets of alloys and a nice big chavvy exhaust so figured as scrap price is almost that around here i cant really go wrong

as you would expect for that money the car is a bit of a shed but theres nothing majorly wrong with it, im at college on an auto repair/technology course at the moment so it will be good to have a project car to get roadworthy and get looking nice

i'll let the pics do the talking really, any comments/suggestions/help is welcomed

One thing is... the engine runs fine but its got a starting problem at the moment so if anyones able to help the thread is here:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=160167.0

Ok, so here it is when i first got it:

So first thing was to get to work checking it all over underneath, none of which was too bad other than the rear shock tops which where rusted through and one side had been bodged with a 0.5Kg weight  :undecided:

Next i started removing the stenciling on the sides as to be honest i would be embarassed to drive that to an MOT station  still got a few more to get off
and those rims are disgusting in my opinion so i painted the set of 13"s it came with black and its rolling on those for now
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Phone267.jpg)

Also began removing this stuff off the rear windows which looks like a fail at spray on window tint
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Phone248.jpg)

last week i made a trip to the scrapyard with a friend, came back with a new backbox as it currently has none other than the massive chav one, a new left side mirror, GTI rear lights and a load of speakers as they were a £1 each

so last pictures for now...

the lights make a big difference i think

Updates might be kinda slow as im rather short on money atm and trying to save what i can for MOT and tax when its ready

Yeah right place... I saw the first couple of pics and thought for that money you cant complain until i saw the custom suspension mount!!   I cant believe someone would drive like that! how dangerous... well it seems your on the right track to put it right..... the rest of it looks pretty solid on the outside..... good luck and keep us posted.

Well ive been looking for a Mk3 for a while now, at one point i got so desperate to get rid of my mk3 astra i was considering anything with wheels and an MOT
but im glad i found this one, got a good deal and white was the colour i wanted

Loads still to do though, although hopefully not too much more before it can be MOT'd
only things left to sort are that starting problem and then once thats sorted i can drive it down and get a small hole in the sill welded up
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!
Post by: rcsammy on 18 August 2010, 16:39
well i hope you guys dont mind small updates because not much has been happening with it recently, need to figure out that starting problem before i can get any major progress done.

heres a crappy quality pic anyway  started sanding off those drips on the side, bloody hard work! its like window tint stuff and its on really thick

just posted my 10 pence worth on your starting problem thread

Cheers, dont think its the earth strap though  :undecided: i tested the resistance from battery terminal to the bolt its held on with the other end and cleaned up the contacts anyway and it read really low

im taking it up to my grandparents farm tomorrow as they are good at problem solving and cars :p then once the starting problems sorted it will be off to have the sill welded up and the MOT time

edit: forgot i should probably put the new exhaust on too

Starting problem is now fixed :) so im going to fit the new backbox this weekend and sort out a couple of other bits n bobs and it will be off for MOT next week

I now feel really stupid  as the starting problem turned out to be a bad earth... even though i resistance tested it and it was fine and also took it off and cleaned it up anyway
My grandad had a look and he put a washer either side of the wire and that did the trick, atleast it works now

dont worry about it, i had the same with my old white mk1 when its suddenly died on me at 60... was the earth strap, on the roadside even the RAC couldnt find the fault and towed it home!

Post by: rcsammy on 05 September 2010, 22:02
another little update
its still starting fine and not draining the battery anymore so thats all good
today i fitted the GTI backbox, it didnt have one on when i got it so picked up a almost new condition GTI one for £8 from scrappy
got it running on 4 cylinders again, turned out to be a dodgy HT lead
and removed all the general crap inside it from me and the previous owner, including rear seats as the previous owner decided to cut the seat belts off  :undecided: seats and no seat belts = MOT fail
once its MOTd and i know im not wasting time/money i will look out for a GTI interior from the scrappy... best place ever

heres some random pics anyway...
giving it a run to charge the battery and my mate stalled it in the middle of no where, 20 minute walk back to his golf to go fetch it :p
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/59300_1307521823045_1680550087_609892_1514055_n.jpg)

With the rear seats removed, well atleast it should be a bit faster

coming along nicely. good luck with mot
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!
Post by: rcsammy on 07 September 2010, 16:41
It is now through MOT  it failed on one wheel bearing, corroded brake lines and the rust on the sill which i knew about anyway

Sold that set of 17" wolfrace wheels for £95 on ebay which is a bit of a result  so once i get the money from those i can get it taxed and insured
It came with both sets of wheels aswell, so does that effectively make it a £65 car? lol
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!
Post by: lewis1641 on 07 September 2010, 17:11
it does in my book!
good work
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!
Post by: Rossabal on 07 September 2010, 21:28
nice man, changed the car into something good!! how are ya liking no rear seats ? i heard its louder on the inside without them ?
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!
Post by: rcsammy on 07 September 2010, 21:38
Cant say at the moment, i havnt driven it with them out yet and when it did have them in it had no backbox on
its already annoying though, was planning on going to snetterton this weekend with some mates but i can only take one person now

im just waiting on payments coming through so i can tax and insure it, then i will be totally skint till i sell the astra

Still got lots of work to do on the golf before im happy with it, still got some of the previous owners 'artwork' to remove... not sure wether to keep the 'DC' on the front NS wing or not, i kinda like it
then Tcut pretty much the whole thing
wire in the radio which looks like a right pita, and fit my sub and speakers
tidy up interior and get looking for some cheap back seats and seatbelts
also need a spare wheel and jack otherwise im screwed if i get a puncture
then once i sell the astra its getting some major slammage!

getting these window tint paint drips off is a nightmare!!!!!

im sanding them off with very fine wet and dry, but some of them are so tough to get off that the primer is starting to show through, especially around the bump stips

i've picked up some paint from halfords as i was told by a few people that its the best match for rattle cans, so hopefully i can spray over the area and then Tcut it in
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!

Personally, if this was my car.. I would remove all the tint spray and that, and sand it down a bit, and matt black it/

i've considered re painting it but im just not sure yet, I really wanted a white golf, was pretty lucky that i found one cheap.
I guess if i cant get the rattle cans to match well enough i might aswell re paint it.

im not too sure on matt black anymore, a lot of people are doing it now... i think i would go for a matt green/nato green like this:

I got it taxed and insured today and took it for its first proper drive, didnt get round to sorting the radio

It drives pretty nice, just a few things that are bugging me that i need to look at...

clutch feels a bit stiff but hopefully thats just the pedal/cable and not the clutch itself so i will have a look at that

no rev counter is rather annoying - need to look at putting one in

no power steering is also annoying at times - not sure wether i can put it on or not and wether it would be worth it

I need to sort out my gear stick problem, explained here:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=166633.0

and no radio!!! heres a couple of pics, 1st pic is the alpine radio and the adapter i have for it, i think i need one thats alpine to VAG fitting
second pic is the mess of bullets and adapters from the previous owner, they were all fitted when i got it

+1 my old 1.4 looked like that so I worked out which wires were original and required, chopped all of the others out and rewired the plugs
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!
Post by: rcsammy on 15 September 2010, 17:37
it looks like the original wires have had bullets put on and then they have fitted the original connectors back on after the bullets, i think the brown and black plugs in the picture are the originals, someone with a non screwed up mk3 might be able to help with that one

edit: i think im going to get some more bullet connectors and just put new ones on all the wires, the alpine HU has bullets off the adapter so i just need to work out what wire goes to where then

oohh i got lots planned :p i need to get it looking decent to start off with though, i would make a lovely long list like SoundillusioN  has in his thread but im not that organised and would miss half of it off anyway

first thing will be a set of coilovers and a VR6 splitter for extra lows if i find one cheap, need my astra to sell before i can afford them though, my dream wheels would be a set of deep dish Borbet A's, ronal turbos and ATS cups would also be acceptable lol... im on a student budget though so anything that expensive is quite a way off

 Dude..... i'm not organised, lists only started near the end as I had my fingers in too many pies and started loosing track of what i needed and what i already had etc. plus its near MOT time now so trying to get priorities right.

yeah you're doing the right thing at the mo so just keep at it mate,   nice plans too.

I take back what i said about power steering! got the tyres pumped up properly today and it made a huuuge difference, its really nice to drive now, it seems to pull a bit better than my 1.4 astra aswell

Got the radio sorted aswell, was easy with that adapter so cheers for the link :)
I have speakers to put in the front and rear door cards, not sure wether to keep the tweaters on the dash or not?

Im not too good with all the audio stuff, but i have 4(component?) speakers for the front and rear door cards and my sub to go in the boot
all 4 of the speakers have a tweeter in the middle already

Im struggling to find somwhere to get an earth strap from, rang round all the local car parts places including GSFcar parts and none sell them  :undecided:

oh i see what you're saying... well try them with and without, you may find that if you wire them in, at high volume with all the other stuff you have going on they'll blow eventually anyway if you feel the need to crank it up!

not sire what to suggest about the earth strap now unless you keep looking for a long length of universal or go scrappers like you said.

Riight, got a new Earth strap and some battery terminals from halfords and got those fitted... still wont start by itself, last time we fiddled with the earth it improved it but obviously its not the full problem

So i then went on to check the starter motor and got a bit confused by the wiring of it, started a thread if anyone can help:

Had a productive day today

Got the starting problem sorted again... hopefully thats it gone now
I had the starter motor out of the car so tested the motor and the solenoid and both seemed fine, so i put it in and turned the key and it started... not sure exactly what the problem was but its been fine all day

So then got my HU wired up properly and my front speakers in
Cant put the rears in yet because the previous owner ripped one of the speaker mounts, so ive attempted to bodge it for now

The HU, got it cheap but its still better than what i had in the astra, does everything i need
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Phone385.jpg)

Front speakers in, Blaupunkts, cant remember the exact model, the stock ones seemed pretty decent but these are a bit better
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Phone381.jpg)

errr bass?? :lipsrsealed: yeah previous owner again....

yeah i was gunna say that aswell lol didnt wanna offend you though if that was your artistic skills going on there i always keep the grills off with non standard speakers in :D

lol i didnt write that, the guy i bought it off did

i put the grills back on for 2 reasons, 1 i didnt want the speakers to get bashed by anything, 2 they look a bit blingy for my tastes
i might try the sony speakers in the front anyway, i like the look of those so wouldnt mind leaving the grills off

the Sony ones are rated higher watts but lower RMS, whats better? from what i understand watts is how loud they can go and rms is somthing to do with quality/distortion?

Both are related to power, nothing to do with quality. In a nutshell, speakers bragging High Peak Power are not as good as those rating high RMS.  if your want to know more look somewhere like Here (http://www.ehow.com/about_5059554_speaker-watts.html)

Good going bud. For the price its awesome! Its on the road, which is the best bit!

Making some great progress. I would keep it white and clean it up, no window tint. Wack on some coilies, get low and save for nice set of wide rims.
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3 CL!
Post by: rcsammy on 20 September 2010, 12:06
thats the plan  first things are coilovers and a deep splitter, im not decided in tinted windows yet though, i think a light tint on the rears might look nice, tints would be low down on my list though

These 13"s will need new tyres pretty soon so i might see if i can pick up a set of cheap BBS's for now. if not theres a rusted out mk1 golf in a field near me with a mint set of P slots on, i know the guy would sell them but i dont know how much

Still deciding on the side repeaters and indicators/blanks, not sure wether to go clear or smoked

oooohhhhh  went to go somwhere earlier today and its the same problem again!!!!!

was starting fine yesterday, went to go start it and nothing again, not even a click
Dad came out to look and he stuck it in a high gear, rolled it forwards to turn the engine over a couple of times and it then started fine

So obviously its getting stuck or somthing, weird though because when i had it out it turned easilly by hand

sooo i just need to decide wether to get a 2nd hand starter motor from the scrapyard or get a new one from the dealer

Sounds like your starter motor is gummed up. I remember my Mini used to do this so everytime it did I hit the poxy thing (the starter, not the Mini!) with a trolley jack handle and it always worked. I soon changed it over though.

I have a 1.4 starter motor if you want it. Only want £10 for it. Not sure how much postage would be. It came off my old 1.4, never had a problem with it.

Just got the rear speakers in, the passenger side rear door card was wrecked.
it looks like the previous owner half ripped it out along with the speaker mount.... i will get a new interior soon but wanted to get the sound system setup so i bodged it with a sh*tload of no more nails  doesnt look pretty but it works

Only thing is now i cant find how to adjust the bass and treble on this HU, all the speakers are 2 way and theres the tweeters on the dash so the high sounds are far too loud

Well i switched my insurance back over to the astra, off to uni on saturday so i need a car which i know is gonna get me there and back

So if the starter motor comes tomorrow then i'll get that in and hopefully thats the starting problem sorted finally
I also want to get some rear seats and parcel shelf in and get gearstick and clutch sorted before i take it up to uni with me

Im hoping to get that all done in 2 or 3 weeks, i should be able to hunt down an interior while im up at uni and then bring it down with me

I went back home last weekend, the starter motor arrived but unfortunatly the mounts are different and the motor is slightly smaller even though its from a 1.4(see pics below). so im still after another starter motor, i guess i'll stick this one back up for sale

I got some rear seats and a parcel shelf off a mate who just switched his interior, its a baige colour but hey its a free interior! and will do nicely for now

I also got all the rust spots fixed and sprayed over and the front left wing touched up as it had alot of chips and scratches
and also got a rear badge sprayed up in satin black as it doesnt have one on currently

I need to think of a way to sort that gear stick problem as thats bugging me, i might be going home again this weekend so can have a look then

heres the starter motors, old motor at the top, new motor which doesnt fit at the bottom

I dont know yet  i literally finished painting then set off back to uni again

It looked like it was a decent match, i think i will be going back in 2 weeks so it will be ready for Tcutting by then
If its not then it shall be going NATO green

Im off to one of the scrapyards in coventry later today so hopefully i can pick up a decent starter motor and some other goodies, ahh i love scrapyards

Got a starter motor, its exactly the same as the original one so should work, £20 and got a receipt to take it back incase it doesnt work so cant complain

the tax on my astra runs out the end of this month so that will go up for sale wether the golf is working or not, but hopefully i will be driving the golf back up to coventry next weekend

Well sorry for the lack of updates.... but finally some progress!

Unfortunatly as im now at uni the whole time and dont get many chances to go back home the starting problem still isnt fixed(its really bugging me now)

But i've been after some wheels for a while and a friend decided to sell his MiM cups(exactly the same as ATS cups)
they should make a good little refurb project for me, theres very slight kurbing on a couple of them but other than that they just need sanding back down to metal and polishing up as the laquer is bubbling alot

heres the before a clean pic
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/02022011020.jpg)

the better condition wheel after a clean
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/03022011022.jpg)

and the rest look like this, you can see the toffee coloured specs where the laquers bubbled and dirts got underneath
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/03022011023.jpg)

they have the metal type valve stems on them which will be really awkward to clean, sand and polish around so i might take them and get the tyres and valves taken off/out.

im back home this weekend so had another go at tackling the starting problem, tried another started motor, its clicking now but still not turning over, guy at the scrapyard in Coventry suggested it could be the ignition switch and gave me one to try but that made no difference either, so im well and truly stumped now

anyway here it is, looking sorry for itself in the driveway, not bothered about the tyre as its bald anyway and i have the cups to go on

atleast the lights look good

fiiiinaaally got the starting problem sorted(or so i hope... its been fine the last few days) which means i can get on with all the other jobs knowing im not wasting my time

so i ripped out the alarm system as it seemed to be causing problems and was just generally messy, plus i didnt have the key or anything for it so i would prefer to not have it there, wasnt too bad to remove, alot of wires though

I wasnt sure on the white front badge so decided to paint it black, and my blanks were cracked and starting to turn green so i got these black blanks off a friend which will do for now
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image106.jpg)

new gear knob!

and today i sanded off the final little bits of those drips down the side, that panel was also pretty scratched and chipped so as my spray can seems to be a pretty good match i thought i would touch it all up, i'll update tomorrow with how its turned out
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image112.jpg)
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3! *New wheels+DIY refurb*
Post by: rcsammy on 22 April 2011, 20:03
and heres the panel after paint, im really happy with how its turned out for a rattle can in the driveway job, its a bit patchy at the moment but should be good once its all T cutted

I also made a plate to solve my gearstick problem, the plastic hook on the gearstick that stops it engaging reverse without being pushed down had worn down to the point that it would go into reverse instead of 1st which is obviously pretty dangerous.

well my latest purchase is some new clocks, as i wanted some with an RPM counter rather than a huge clock
Pretty sure they are anni clocks, maybe someone can tell me?  got them cheap as you can see there is a crack in the front, will get a new one at some point.

You can use the plastic bit from your old clocks to replace the cracked one. There's 8 or so screws holding the front to the back of the dials.

well got it insured and taxed today and have been for a nice drive, i know they arnt supposed to handle great but compared to my old mk3 astra it drives amazing. its considerably faster too, the clutch is slipping atm but its still alot faster considering it has the same size engine as the astra and supposedly exactly the same power... very pleased with it :)

the clocks are in and all the dials work and are spot on, so im happy with that :)
was wondering what would i need to control the MFA display?

Cool.  Good to hear you're out and about in it now.

Um, the MFA is not just missing controls, you've got the wrong loom for it and missing some senders I think.

You will need a wiper stalk from a GTI but the rest I am unsure of as i'm only clued up a bit on the MK1 MFA (even though mine is dead at the mo)

few pics from the last couple of days

found some nasty rust on the boot, behind the numberplate so set to work on that
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image130.jpg)

Had to cut off the screws holding the numberplate on as they were too rusty, i dont have a welder so i have cut out the rust, covered over the hole and stuck the numberplate on... it will do for now, atleast the rust is gone

got to work on a few other patches on the boot to sort it all out
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image132.jpg)

colour coded the boot button/plinth while i was at it, just waiting for the paint to harden up then i can put it all back together along with the badge and perhaps a GTI boot spoiler
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image136.jpg)

Gave the rear panel that was painted a couple of weeks ago a quick polish, is looking alot better now but its still quite matte

got some rear seats from the scrapyard to go in, good condition just a bit dusty
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image138.jpg)

aaand finally some clear indicators and blanks and some smoked side repeaters.... opinions on the side repeaters? im not sure on them :/

Yeah im at uni in coventry, im back in Ipswich until september now though
I was over on Holyhead road this year, im off London road i think next year

theres also the Dub meets at sainsburys every wednesday in coventry, i shall start going more regularly when im back

As for the golf, i think the plans trim wise are to stick with the CL side trim and colour code it, not keen on the GTI arches
I think im going to leave the spoiler off for now and see what it looks like when i've got a bit further with the project

Stick it on there and paint it white, why no paint the rest of the car matt white?? and id just paint the bumpers, chances are you'l buy a pair and they need painting anyway.

Looking good tho, i like old bangers, its like a blank canvass!

Looking good tho, i like old bangers, its like a blank canvass!

the exact words i have used to describe it before

I've got some very strong double sided tape so i might use that to temporarily hold the spoiler on, then i can decide wether i like it or not... will get a mate to photoshop it white aswell

as for bumpers mine are ruined and they are textured so the entire thing would need sanding, if i do paint them then i would be better off getting some GL bumpers first

i think im going to smooth the swage line aswell, i think white cars look good clean/smoothed

Need to get the wheels sorted soon, so stuck them on and got a picture to photoshop so i can decide on a colour

Its hard to get an idea atm as it will all be colour coded eventually, but let me know your opinions

I just did a few colours to get an idea, came out a bit metalic but im not that good with photoshop so will have to do...lowered it too
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/black.jpg)

this is supposed to be a sort of baby blue
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/babyblue.jpg)

tried out a black roof too
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/roof.jpg)

while fitting the cups i noticed it may need some archwork done, although once lowered it should pull the wheel in a bit

hello mate, just been through the whole thread, gotta say - good work so far!

I'm surprised the clocks work because your original clocks only go up to 120mph, and the rev counter in a 1.4 should redline at about 5750 and end at 6.5k if I remember correctly. Also when I fitted those clocks in my old 1.6, the oil warning light used to flash if I took the revs over 2000rpm due to different oil pressure sensors so you wanna check that if you haven't already.

I've got a load of spares in my shed all going cheap if you want them. Got a pair of colour coded bumpers, and a mint tailgate all in white. I've got a pair of tinted rear windows if that's your thing. Got a genuine VR6 front splitter. Got smoked fog lights and indicators, can supply switch and loom if needed. Got smoked crystal rear lights. Got 3dr leather seats with rear headrests (no door cards). Got a pair of front doors but unfortunately in mystic blue. And to top it all off I work at a VW breakers so can also get my hands on a white bonnet for you.

Anything I can do for you just give me a shout!

:o thats amazing  which breakers do you work at? i think i've been to all of them around here looking for bumpers and other bits

did you want to PM me some prices? im deffinatly after colour coded bumpers and a VR6 splitter. would be interested in seats and lights too, but depends how much money i got left.
Think im going to leave the bonnet black for now, im after a vento front for it in a few weeks

As for the clocks, im surprised they work too but everything seems fine so far, when i first put them in i did have the oil light flash a couple of times after it had just been started but its not done that since then, redline and speedo seem spot on too

not much progress this weekend, just replaced the CV joint gaitor, managed to mess up the camber putting it all back together

as usual previous owners bodged, looks like the gaitor split and he tried to fix it with silicone sealant, no clips holding it in place or anything, the sealant was all in the CV joint aswell... surprised they didnt pick up on this at the last MOT

put a new clutch in yesterday, took ages but wasnt too bad other than trying to get the gearbox back on, drives alot nicer now though.

only thing is since then its been making this knocking noise, 2 or 3 knocks a second, it only does it when im coasting(off throttle), does it in a gear or with clutch down
the noise stops as soon as i touch the throttle or steer a bit

Im guessing it must be a CV joint or driveshaft issue? i had the driveshafts disconnected from the gearbox but didnt have them apart or anything, they were fine before the clutch

Got some new seats at the weekend, spotted them in a scrapyard

They are mk3 cabrio seats, in good condition other than a small hole in the drivers bolster, £10 each so cant complain... they are soooo much more comfy than the old seats, and arnt blue! so thats a plus too

Then got the rears in aswell, had these for a while, just needed to straighten out one of the brackets in the car so they could fit, these were £10 for the bench :)

spent a couple of evenings smoothing off and painting the bump strips, got all of them smoothed and primered, ready for paint tomorrow

i could of just painted them as is but i think being smooth will look alot better, although sanding off the texture is a major pain in the ass

didnt know that, 16s are the ideal size for mk3s i think, shame mine are 15s

I have started working on the cups again as i want them fitted asap, im still struggling to get them to a nice finish, im having to use a heavy grade paper/sanding drum to get the machining marks and pitting off but then thats leaving deep scratches which are then also hard to get rid of
heres what they are like
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image103.jpg)

quick pic of one of the arches, this is the best of the lot  the others need a little tweak
the lips rolled up flat and then the arch flared very slightly

Right, not updated this in a while

Not a whole lot has gone on, i've been sorting out my audio, got a new sub and mounted the amp and everything in the boot and amped the front and rear door speakers so thats all good now

I've put the Cups on for MOT as my 13"s tyres are getting low, it sits pretty nice, they still arnt refurbed though

tthe black bumpers do suite it atm, looks kinda ratty i think
im aiming for a nice clean white and black look in the end though so they will be colour coded... as you will now see

Time for an update to where i am now

So i had MOT a couple of weeks ago and it was having a small hole in the floor patched up and the welding caught light to some waxoil that was on the floor, the fire spread and caught light to the interior, the rear carpet, front seat, door card and headliner were all burnt, luckily my rear seats and sub were not in the car at the time so they are still ok.
Well as you would expect the garage sorted me out with a new interior, so i now have black GTI door cards, black carpets and plastics all round and black GTI front seats... a big improvement from my old blue carpets and door cards, only thing i miss is my cabrio seats. pics further down

well anyway this week i have painted my front bumper and sorted out the paint on the rear bumper so they will go on later this week once the paint hardens. and i have also been sorting out the bodged up sunroof which now opens and closes without any leaks! and just generally tidying up a few things

fire in the footwell
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image289.jpg)

headliner
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image290.jpg)

door cards, i didnt get any pics of the seat but the passenger seat was burnt to the frame
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image291.jpg)

New interior, i got some new mats and chrome handles
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/Image028.jpg)

The front bumper was in a pretty bad way, alot of the paint was flaked off and it was cracked all over, the bumper itself was ok though
so sanded smooth

got the bumpers on today, the fronts still fresh paint though so its not been polished up or anything yet

so fully colour coded bumpers, tinted indicators and blanks and spray tinted depo red black reds... also recently fitted some wind deflectors

ideally i want some all reds or red black reds but these will do for now, they look alot cleaner than the tinted rears imo

im really pleased with it anyway, its getting how i want it now, next big thing is getting the wheels and stance sorted

Started refurbing the other set of 7Js last week, going slow though because of weather and i now have a badly blowing exhaust which i need to sort first

heres the wheels to start with, this ones dirty but they are corroded where the laquers gone bad so need quite a heavy sanding to get a smooth surface

tyres and valves removed, jack one wheel up and spin it up in 1st or 2nd, lots easier :P

after the 240G sand, still need to sort out the curb marks and then sand with the finer paper

erm well i decided to get some steelies for winter, so i will paint the rears while they are off the car and put them on in a couple of months

not sure wether to switch to smaller tyres on the front so i can space it out so it sits flush like the rear
to get the same size profile and stretch as the rear on the 7Js i would need a 155/60/15 though which is getting to quite a narrow tyre... but then its only 20mm less than the rear... opinions?

my wheels were getting ruined with the salt on the road so i decided rather than ruin my nice freshly painted wheels i would get some steelies for winter, that way i can paint the rears while they are off the car and stick them on as a full set next year

obviously i couldnt run any normal steelies :P

Big update time!

I picked up a white 3 door TDI last weekend, yep the exact same car but with a TDI engine, its also much better condition inside and out

It drives really nice and is alot quicker than the 1.4, i've done the Evry mod so its got a bit more power now too

i will be swapping all of the bits over from the 1.4 in the next couple of weeks and then the 1.4 will be sold as a pretty much standard car

the TDI

1.4 left, TDI right

began swapping the coilovers onto the TDI this weekend, although a rusty and rounded suspension bolt means i cant get the front suspension off the TDI yet

Standard Vs coilovers

Rear lowered, front standards stuck on... this is how its sitting atm

Yes! i like this!

Best way to do it too, swap everything over! instead of the old 'how can i do an engine swap' question.. blah blah blah!

Will you be making it almost identical except with a TDI engine?
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3! *coilys, cups, colour coded!!!pg17-
Post by: rcsammy on 23 January 2012, 17:19
i thought about doing an engine conversion on the 1.4, but even converting to a GTI or TDI is alot of work and at the end of the day its easier and cheaper to just buy a car with the engine in already

I was quite happy with my 1.4 though so i didnt want to get another car unless it was a 3 door in black or white, and to find a 3 door diesel is quite rare, this one came up for sale on another forum for £650, bought it for £600... drove it down the road and noticed a massive lack in power, so the seller agreed to refund me £100 back to fix it( i didnt think it was anything major, £100 was enough for a new turbo which was worst case scenario)... drove it home and got it on VAG-COM which said it was a faulty MAF sensor, replaced that for £10 and its running awesome now, so £510 for it really, well pleased

but yeah i'll pretty much swap everything over onto the TDI and carry on the project from there, then the 1.4 will be sold as a pretty much standard car

Colour coded side strips switched over, what a pita these things are... only way i could get them to clip on was to put a towel over them and full on kick them

the paints cracked from when they were first fitted on the 1.4 anyway so i need to get some more and probably glue them on at some point

all the clips were new a couple of months ago, i had the same problems when they were brand new

they just dont clip in and stay in without a massive wack

i'll get some new strips and do a better job of painting them, then probably just glue them on so they sit nice and flush

Me neither, where did you get the clips from and were they all the correct depth ones in the right places along the length of the door strips as they do vary?
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3! *coilys, cups, colour coded!!!pg17-
Post by: DanChave on 31 January 2012, 21:31
Am i right in thinking the the 3 door models use the deeper set clips partially on the doors, where as the 5 doors only use the more shallow versions? If you haven't been using the deeper ones, that's probably your problem :)
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3! *coilys, cups, colour coded!!!pg17-

Post by: rcsammy on 31 January 2012, 23:11
nah its cool they are on now, 3 doors use loads of the smaller clips, and then a weird half size clip right at the end which always breaks

fancy a trip to the scrapyard in the afternoon?

well, heres what i achieved today.... dont worry its not staying poo brown for long

you may not have noticed as i tried to take pics from the other side, but the drivers side front wing was very badly painted the wrong colour white by the previous owner, it was also rusty and a bit scratched/chipped

yeah... eventually

need to put the camber on the rear, so i can take the car and the wheels to have the arches rolled and flared professionally
then i can get the tyres removed, paint the rear wheels, then get them all on

like i said before, the drivers side wing was in a terrible state before, a rusty, dented, fillered dragon green wing that was badly painted the wrong colour white by the previous owner... hence theres not one single picture of the TDI from that side of the car until now

Oddly enough, I think the fact that it's only one panel that's stickered makes it look better than if the whole car was done.
You look at one side of the car and you go, "hmm, white car pink wheels" then you see the other side.

I reckon that most people just sticker-bomb the bonnet, but this is different from the rest. Not that I personally would drive it

I put the camber on the rear of the TDI last weekend, ready to get the arches rolled now

I also swapped over the colour coded boot plinth thing and boot button to the TDI boot, de wipered it and painted the badge and backing plate

could still do with a new boot as the rust is under the window seal, but atleast it looks better for now

Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3! *new car pg21*
Post by: rcsammy on 21 February 2012, 01:27
nah deffinatly not doing the whole car, part of the reason i bought it is for the colour
the stickerbomb wont last long either, its almost impossible to seal it all with lacquer, one crease that the lacquer doesnt quite cover and the water soaks in and you can just pull the stickers off... its going damp underneath already

I've got a twin magnet back box if your interested. What front indicators, fogs and blanks have you got? Did you tint them yourself? I want to get some that look really black...

no thanks mate, i think im going to go for a hidden exhaust, or maybe just a single rolled sort of tip

it doesnt have fogs, so just indicators and blanks

bought them for £10 off a forum, the guy had spray tinted them

yeah cut a section out to fit then plastic welded the edges, you just have to make sure you get the right section from the rear bumper so the curve lines up

some progress on the smoothed bumper, i've made some indicators in the headlights ready for when the smoothed bumper goes on(will be a little while yet though)

they are made of 4 lengths of LED strips soldered together, stick on the side of the light and then painted black other than the actual LEDs so they are hardly visible when off

and im smoothing in the indicator and fog light holes.... but do i smooth the plate recess too?

Are you going to paint the whole thing white or just the bottom section? I reckon you should get a few badges, and try a few different colours out, pink for you winter wheels and blue for the Cups :)

spacers are on, 15mm thick
i spaced the hub rather than the wheel as i could make them myself, cost me just over £10 for the material and bolts
wheel pokes just a little bit  :)

Nice to see a bit of initiative used once in a while although i'm intrigued as to whether this way of spacing the axles out is any stronger or safer than the conventional way of using spacers between the wheel and disc face. Obviously you had to use longer stub axle bolts, i hope they were high grade one ie. 12.9 as i should think the forces against them have just been increased considerably.

Sound advice :afro: needs to be high grade bolts as you said.
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3!
Post by: rcsammy on 16 May 2012, 21:13
the bolts are 'BZP' high tensile steel, i was advised that they would be strong enough, opinions welcome though?

i decided to space the hub rather than the wheel because it was a lot cheaper and also i wanted to use my current wheel bolts

the spacer options were either a 15mm bolt on type spacer which the cheapest i could find was £120 for a pair, or the standard hubcentric type using long bolts which were around £60... but i then had to run the crappy looking bolts and also had to pay £30-40 for a set of longer locking bolts

They need to be at least 10.8 grade, 12.9 if you can get them, check and see what is stamped on the bolt head.

Would be a ball ache removing them every time if you had different offset wheels for winter though!

Think the reason this isn't done more often is simply down to the ....simplicity........ of adding spacers on the wheel side. Obviously cant do anything of this sort if you need to adapt the PCD though. Still, good thinking!

The other thing is you putting a lot of stress on the stub axle bolts.
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3!
Post by: rcsammy on 17 May 2012, 00:01
surely its less stress than wheel bolts though as it would get all the same forces except they all have to go through the wheel bolts first
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3!
Post by: Seanl on 17 May 2012, 07:15
Think its probably more actually as the stress point is further in.

i've just finished painting the passenger side wing, its been off the car for a week or so now and i have had a temp wing from the old car in place(you might have noticed the dodgy hole in the wing in the last few pics)

so anyway, i started grinding the rust back, fillered and primered it.... then got carried away and ended up smoothing over the arial hole... which ended up with me spraying the whole thing haha, but its come out good so im happy

pic doesnt do it justice, its by far the best body panel i have sprayed so far

Good work mate.Like the stub axle spacers.
For future reference ive got 78 12.9 longer stub axle bolts as i couldnt buy just 8 so bought a box of 100.
I will never use that many so ive just been sending them out for the cost of postage so if you get stuck and want some more give me a shout.

Cars looking really well btw.

got the wing on, paint matches ok i think, the bonnet, drivers side wing and front bumper are all alpine white as they are off my old car so ignore those for now
the doors and rear quarters really need a good polish as they are pretty much matte at the moment so i think once thats done the wing should fit in nicely

however i would like to do somthing with them at somepoint, maybe the lupo stubby mirrors... but i would like some with the indicators in as then i can smooth the wings completely

I always miss replys on this thread for some reason

yeah its the 1z TDI lump, i do want to mod it when i have some spare cash, not too much though as i dont want to lose the awesome MPGs it gets... probably bigger injectors, FMIC, straight through exhaust or atleast a de-cat, remap and possibly a new manifold and larger turbo

I would like an early grill, but they arnt cheap... im happy with the 3 bar one i have now for the time being

I finally got some motivation back and started back on the bumper

got the other side plastic welded up, had to put another peice in to carry the line on, as on the standard bumper it changes depth between the side and the front
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20120728_143431.jpg)

did the same on the other side, smoothed over the sunk down square bit in the numberplate recess and the screw holes

UPDATE!

i've been meaning to get round to re-doing my rear lights for quite a while now.

They are Depo M3 style lights, red bottom and clear top as standard, i bought them already spray tinted red top, smoked middle and red bottom... however over time the tint has faded leaving the top a manky orange and just generally they werent in brilliant condition

i wanted to do them properly so i sanded off all of the old tint so i was left with the standard clear top half, i also sanded off the depo branding and numbers stamped into the bottom corner.

then spray tinted the top section(indicator) red and the middle(reverse light) smoked and then lacquered the whole thing for an awesome finish :)

i've never done anything with lights before so this was a bit of an experiment, they arent perfect but im well happy

before:

during:

after:

Just the one finished at the moment, im just finishing up the lacquer on the other, will put them back on the car in a few days when they have hardened up

right i've finally got rid of the horrible plasticy standard steering wheel

i've ended up with two Nardi Torino wooden rim steering wheels, came standard in some MX5s, one with a black centre and one with a polished centre

i think the black centred one will look better in the car but im just re-doing the varnish on that at the moment so have put the polished one in for now.

pics dont do them justice, but haters gonna hate ;)

I've finally got round to finishing off the black centred steering wheel last week and its now in the car

when i got it, the varnish was cracked around the spokes and it was chipped off to the bare wood at the top of the wheel

so i sanded most of the wheel back to the wood, put on a few coats of yacht varnish and then G3 compounded it all flat, now its like new :)

i've also had a straight through exhaust put on, a couple of months ago my exhaust caught on a cats eye and it snapped the pipe just after the cat, so i have been driving around since then with it bodged up and catching the floor all the time

i like to do everything myself but i had a garage do this one, i got it done really cheap and it saves me crawling around on the floor trying to work out what bend pipe i need etc

its 2" straight through, no cat, no silencers, its really quiet, no different to standard really

not got a tip or anything on it, im not sure if i want one or to hide it, or to just leave it OEM looking

sooo i wanted a little change for next year, i either wanted a set of Corvette Salad shooters or some more 8J or 9J ATS cups to make a staggered set

after a lot of messaging i picked up these 9J ET15 Cups, i know 15"s on mk3's arent everyones cup of tea but i like them.

if my calculations are correct they should sit perfectly on the rear with the spacers taken out, they should poke about 4mm more, and i can put the 8Js up front and sell off the set of 7Js

Not sure if im going to stick with the blue or go for a change of colour yet either.

bit of an update on this, MOT was due on the 22nd of December, failed on a few things, but nothing too bad

Basically it needed some welding, a hole in the floor and a couple of patches on the sills... pretty much down to being lowered... one of the holes isnt even rusty, it looks like something has just punched a hole in it

a inner CV boot(what a pain in the arse that was!)

failed on a couple of wishbone bushings, i decided to replace both front arms and both ball joints while i was at it.

corroded brake lines, weren't too bad so sanded the rust off and gave them a coat of red oxide paint

thats about it really, i had to take the headlight tint film off and swap the rear lights for some standard ones because of the red indicators though

first on the list was some welding, I got a TIG welder in the summer  but hadn't got around to setting it up and learning how to use it. so after a little while practising on some old metal i set about welding the hole up in the floor... bear in mind this is my first time ever using a welder, i watched some youtube videos to get an idea then just set about having a go with it.

it was a bit awkward as i had to make it up of 4 little plates to follow the shape of the floor, i tried bending one piece to shape but it didnt work too well... oh well more practise for me!

Heres the rust, its one of those rubber bungs thats in the floors of mk3s, its gone rusty around the hole and fallen out, i could put most of my arm into the hole!

and all welded up, was pretty good practice as it was thin metal but didnt need to be too neat, welds were a bit messy but it held well and looks fine once ground flat and undersealed

that led me to my next problem! not MOT related....

after welding up the hole in the floor i noticed the footwells were filling up with water pretty quickly! so i ripped the interior out and put it inside to dry out.

I sat in the car whilst a friend sprayed it with a hose to find the leak... turned out it was coming in through the bonnet release cable bung under the scuttle panel, a bit of silicone sealant later and thats sorted

Interesting though, it seems that before the water was draining out of the hole in the floor, once welded it just puddled up in the back, bit of a rubbish picture but there was about an inch of water!

another un MOT related problem i had, one day the power steering pump just fell off, two of the bolts had sheared and the other two had fallen out... bit annoying but some new bolts and a new belt later and its all back on

i did the 2nd bit of welding today, this is the nearside rear of the sill, the rail was folded up from hitting a speedbump and i think that had caused a hole to open up

bent the rail back into place and cleaned all the metal up

I ran out of gas so didnt get as many welds on as i would of liked, its held very firmly in place, i just wanted to make it a bit neater. I was getting the hang of doing some short seam welds though

its in for its MOT retest tomorrow so im hoping to weld a patch over the last little hole and then it should be all good :)

all in incuding the cost of the MOT its only cost me about £100... thats with the two new lower arms, both ball joints and CV boot kit

Cheers, i've got the arch to sort once i get a bit better, thats mainly why i went for TIG not MIG, it seemed they were harder to use but much better for fine metal like bodywork

not sure whats best to do with the sills now, i was going to take off all the underseal and paint them smooth... but i think they are too battered for it to look good, so maybe i need to find some white underseal to match the rest
Title: Re: Sams Scruffy Mk3!
Post by: SoundillusioN on 30 December 2012, 22:40
Meh, probably best keeping some heavy duty underseal on the sills, stones will probably soon ruin a smooth finish and then rust.

I was meant to be treating myself to a welder for my birthday in September but never got round to it, defo investing in the new year as the Van needs a sh*t load of welding and there is no way I can afford to pay someone else to it, plus it'll be good practice before I do the little jobs the Golf needs.

What welder did you buy and how much?

Its one of the Xcalibur range from BOC, not sure exactly how much it was as it was a present from my Dad.
I'd originally asked for a MIG, but being the generous man he is he went all out and got a TIG instead, TIGs are quite a bit more expensive, but i've been told a decent MIG will set you back around £150 and will be fine for most welding on vehicles

Did some more welding this weekend, began work on the nearside rear arch.

It has some pretty bad rust holes in it, i welded 2 plates in, i couldnt get the TIG setup quite right so it took me a while to do it and it was quite messy, but now its ground down it just needs a bit of filler and paint :)

i also learnt how to stick/arc weld so stick welded the arch liner to the new metal instead of TIG

Thanks :)

couple of things to update on

Went to Newcastle last weekend for a night out and it just so happened there was
a good condition Candy white boot for sale in Middlesbrough... so we
stopped off on the way, swapped the boots over and left my old rusty boot in my mates garden!

its all dirty again now but you get the idea! it has done about 300 miles already to be fair

i do still need to take the wiper off and swap my lock and plinth over, not sure wether to paint the badge again or leave it chrome

last week i test fitted the 9Js on the rear, they sat perfect, poked about 5mm which is just how i want it to sit.

the 205/45s that were on them were rubbing a bit though so i bought some 195/45s which will hopefully do the trick

I also picked up a good condition full leather interior for a good price so have been fitting that this weekend, pretty sure the front seats are heated too so im on the lookout for a loom for them

i've been spraying the 9Js this week ready for Ultimate Dubs next weekend, along with a load of other little bits like spraying the bit of arch i welded up, spraying a new badge for the boot and just tidying it up

sanded all the chips and marks out

filler primed to fill in any imperfections

white primed

painted and lacquered!

I just need to give them a few days for the lacquer to harden up and then get the tyres put on and give the dishes a good polish

like the 8Js i also painted the back of the lip so the blue shows though behind the tyre stretch

Before:

little update, tried to go a touch lower on the front last weekend and the chassis leg sat on the driveshaft on the drivers side... i wasnt aware that it was that close, but after raising it up the CV joints are still noisy so i think its not done them a lot of good!

undecided whether to notch it or keep it at this height

went home for easter and found the old bumper i was smoothing, it had been sat around so long it was covered in mould. so i quickly finished it off to a reasonable standard and gave i a quick blast of white primer and stuck it on the car to see how it looked... im not sure i actually want to run it... its either this or standard bumper with colour coded foglight vents

opinions please!

i forgot to take the smoothed bumper off before i went back to uni haha so im driving around with an unfinished bumper atm

I changed the drivers side wheel bearing last week, the passenger side was done about a month ago, the car drives and sounds sooo much better now.

the race inside the bearing had actually broken up and disappeared, my wheel was caked in grease, dirt and rubbish from the bearing and there was almost an inch of play in it, anyone who has me on facebook will have seen the video.

while it was up in the air i noticed my sump had taken a few knocks and scrapes, so i may have to weld some plates on that next time im back home

I also decided to grind off a couple of bad rust spots on the drivers door, then i found more and more tiny rust scabs and ended up respraying most of the lower door, its still in primer at the moment

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG-20130409-WA0006_zps69c8ead2.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG-20130409-WA0006_zps69c8ead2.jpg.html)

it took me waaaay longer to sort than it should have, after a lot of filling, sanding, painting and sanding im reasonably happy with it

Its been a while!  i've been really busy over summer witth work, done a few odd little bits on the golf but its mainly stayed the same

i've been mainly trying to get it a little bit lower and also getting it so it can be driven low without smashing everything to bits

heres how it ended summer '13, had a temporary dark blue bumper on there which i started to quite like the look of... was tempted to get a pov spec black textured one to run

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20131015_131327_zpse4313cbc.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20131015_131327_zpse4313cbc.jpg.html)

Chassis Notched and engine raised using a hockey puck on each mount, sump sits a good 10-20mm above subframe now

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20130910_175646_zps56e30d6c.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20130910_175646_zps56e30d6c.jpg.html)

swapped to the winter wheels, ran the teardrops for a bit but they are now sold and i've got myself a set of G60s

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20131118_131531_zps6de6fdb5.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20131118_131531_zps6de6fdb5.jpg.html)

also gave it its first clean since edition38 lol

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20131118_135816_zpsb9af0d03.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20131118_135816_zpsb9af0d03.jpg.html)

i've got a set of 5 G60s so i decided to start refurbing them one by one, been trying out the sandblaster at work, its small and takes a while but gives a perfect finish, this is bare metal after beingg blasted

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20131127_152918_zpsa3cfa12c.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20131127_152918_zpsa3cfa12c.jpg.html)

had a go with the MIG welder at work too to plate up my spare sump, this is the first time i've used a MIG but its pretty straight forward really!

the sumps probably a bit overkill, its got a 5mm plate over the bottom of it and then another 3mm plate over the bulge where the sump plug sits... i've still got a little more to do on it

Yeah I love the colour, I just wanted something fairly oem looking and that would be easy to sell them in if I need the cash

I've put on a pair of lower ball joint extenders and flipped the tie rods to underneath the hub rather than on top, the tie rods were hitting on the chassis pretty bad, after flipping them i have a good 20mm clearance, the ball joint extenders keep the arms parallel with the track rod to eliminate bump steer and also stop the inner arm hitting on the subframe

i also put on a pair of supersport lowering top mounts, these are supposed to lower it by 20mm but i would say mine has gone even further! i need to raise it up because my tyres are scrubbing like mad with any kind of steering input

but its currently sat with about 10mm clearance to the subframe, splitter has about 5mm clearance and its pretty much tucking 15"s!

but mainly the top mounts allow me to still run low but gain back some of my suspension travel and get some ride quality back!

MOT time has come around!

had it in yesterday and it didnt actually do too bad, some tyres, a CV boot and a bit of welding, all of which i knew about

well... all of it other than this hole which has me rather confused, its on the outside edge of the sill rail in the middle of the car, its a bit rusty around the edges but is a pretty clean hole like something has punched right through it

got a whole new driveshaft as euro car parts had a massive sale on this weekend, the old boot was a bit knackered! haha

also eyeing up some new wheels for this season, opinions?

So last weekend was a busy one, with the help of some good friends we were able to transform the golf in just 3 days!

i'll let the pics do the talking, there is also a timelapse video of the respray and refitting at the end of this post!

rolled it into work, setup a bay and removed the whole front end and bumper to spray that seperatly

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20140523_232756_zpsr3llkprp.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20140523_232756_zpsr3llkprp.jpg.html)

keying the paint, removing rust and started setting up the makeshift spray booth

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20140524_182015_zpsj6ud25w9.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20140524_182015_zpsj6ud25w9.jpg.html)

booth done, windows masked, repaired patches primered... its go time!

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20140524_202607_zpskch19qd5.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20140524_202607_zpskch19qd5.jpg.html)

in the meantime, tyres have been fitted!

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20140525_025217_zps36syi6kr.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20140525_025217_zps36syi6kr.jpg.html)

done, bump strips going on... ditched those crappy clips for some sikaflex, looks so much better.... yeah i still need to sort that arch, thats a job for another day

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20140526_012229_zpsl3fvakwf.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20140526_012229_zpsl3fvakwf.jpg.html)

being assembled

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20140528_112332_zpsnx6kvkfu.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20140528_112332_zpsnx6kvkfu.jpg.html)

and its party trick!

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/rcsammy/The%20Golf/IMG_20140526_210055_zpsk3welt7s.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/rcsammy/media/The%20Golf/IMG_20140526_210055_zpsk3welt7s.jpg.html)

and here is the video

http://youtu.be/PwHD1FXlHoI

it still need a lot of flatting and polishing, the bonnet is all i have done so far

i've made a couple of trick bits for it such as a magnetic front numberplate and 'quick release' front bumper which i can put pics up of if anyone is interested

i just need to sort my front arches/tyres/fitment now as its catching the arches bad, i can hardly steer! but i'll get it sorted as i want to go a touch lower on the front... because i can!
