Hmm where to start really!

Here's a breakdown of what i use:

Wash:
Poorboys Superslick Suds
Supa snow foam - used with my foam lance

Claying:
Megs Quik Detailer and Sonus Green Clay Bar

Polishing:
Autoglym Glass Polish
Autoglym Super Resin polish
followed by Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection

Wax:
Collinite 915 - superb shine and durability - best suited for darker colours

Trim
Poorboys Natural Look; works great on all plastics

Wheels & Tyres
Megs Hot Rims
Autoglym Wheel Sealant
Megs Endurance Gel

Get some microfibre cloths and use one for each product and a sperate one for buffing.

won't go far wrong with that list mate :afro:

Add a bottle of Quik Detailer (something like Meguairs Quik Detailer will do) which will help with the clay bar and also to freshen up the shine between washes

thats not a bad list at all,

i wouldn't bother with the poorboys world polish with carnuba, you really want a pure polish so something like meguiars stage 2 would be fine. i say this as you are buying the collinite which is a great wax so no need for the blend in the polish.

i'd also suggest a pack of microfibre towels for buffing etc and a waffle weave drying towel. loads of people rate these:

also meguiars new ultimate quick detailer is meant to be incredible:

any kind of quick detailer will become your best friend!

if you've got a MK4 odds are its reflex silver

i'd recommend Super Doublecoat Auto Wax (No. 476s) for it!

i'd recommend the sonus clay over the megs, its a finer clay so less likely to marr you paint and is fine enough to not totally strip your wax

obviously you need at least 2 buckets

There is a great thread in the mk5 section about washing your car

The only thing I would add is if you live in a hard water area use rain water collected of your car port or conservatory etc for rinsing.  You will get no water marks if you rush the drying a bit.

if your car gets dusty in between washes you can use the QD and a microfibre cloth to wipe off the dust, and freshen up your wax leaving it looking shiney all the time

also used when using a clay bar as a lubricant

wht not just wash iy though?
is the QD and cloth quicker?

does it not scratch the paint?

its sounds like a lazy wash

washing will remove wax and stuff, QD is designed to enhance the longevity of the wax, as long as its just dust the QD is quicker, using QD on a dirty car, will have a negative effect as you'll just rub dirt into the paint

right I think I'm getting there!

So wash and polish as normal. If you need a quick buff up on a cleanish car then qd and microfibre?

wash polish and wax, polish will give you no protection.

QD and a micro fibre can be used between washes to get rid of dust / water marks if you should get them.  for semi dirty jobs a cool rinse will keep most of the wax on.

so what does polish do?
can you not wash then wax?
what is glaze
what is sealent?
the more I try to read up the more options keep appearing!

polish is like a prep, so it cuts back crap and can polish out minor scratches.
if you wash then wax, you just wax over the crap, if you haven't polished. the only time you get away with a wash and wax is if there is a healthy amount of wax on the car in the first place.
glaze improves the shine of the polishing stage, before waxing
sealant is a kind of protective layer you put over a polishjed surface, but under wax.

yeah you can wash then wax, just the aim of QD or a cool wash is to keep the wax you're already got in the paint on and not to wash it off.

polish contains really fine abrasives that effectively smooth the surface to make it smooth and remove fine sratches, polish will also add a gloss but not as much as a glaze

glaze basically give your paintwork the gloss / wet look glazes don't contain any adrassivs so you apply after polishing.  glazes also offer no protection so you need either a sealant or wax on top

sealants are pretty much a liquid resin that forms a protective layer over your polish / glaze

wax adds a further shine and also helps protect from uv / contaminates wax also causes the beading effect and water will sit on top and slide off, this means you wont have to worry about water marks after rain

to do a full job you would probably use a foamer to cleans the car, wash rinse and dry, clay the car (remove below surface contaminates), use a paint cleaner (on top contaminates), polish, glaze, seal and wax

Lol, I've been doing a lot of reading around car cleaning at the moment too. I always thought I had a good technique (my cars have always been kept clean) but I reckon its all about to get better!

You're right, there is a fair bit to do, but it depends just how clean you want your car. Also, if you do it regularly, it should theoretically be easier to keep clean.

I was reading that about 2-3 deep cleans (the whole shebang) a year should suffice with regular washing intervals. I always aim to get a fresh layer of polish and wax etc... on just before winter starts and then again before summer.

Tire dressing always adds the finishing touch too in my opinion! Currently I use Meguiars Hot wheels tire spray, but I've heard the gel is better and lasts longer.

i just wash with car shampoo and use a good polish and sometimes use a wax! and a bit of tyre gel! still looks the muts when clean!  :undecided:  - micro fibres are the best cloths to use! they really are worth getting!

Just bought this cos I thought it was a bargain!!!

http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/d/meguiars+premium+car+care+kit/pid/2325515 (http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/d/meguiars+premium+car+care+kit/pid/2325515)
Had already washed the car last night, so I thought I'd give the QD a go! I honestly cannot beleive how good the car looks even after the wash last night - it is so much better and it literally too me 10 mins if that!

The Microfibre cloths really are the dogs too!

What else do I need to add the above kit? I have a nearly full bottle of MER polish - does this fit into the above kit/routine? E.g. wash, Mer, the the maguiars wax?

What else do I need to add the above kit?

probably just some applicator pads, you might have got them with the kit, i like to use a separate microfibre for each product, so you might want a few more of them.  you'll want a tyre dresser (http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels-tyres/trim-tyre-dressing-applicator/prod_340.html) for the wheels too.

what you using to dry your car? i'd recommend the megs water magnet or the sonus der wunder drying towel (the sonus is better IMO)

MER is good but old school, and can be hard to remove and cakes, megs stage 2 polish is good and produces a nice shine.
what you can do is add some MER to your shampoo
