Title: How to - Resync your keys / Change key battery
Post by: Rhyso on 17 February 2008, 16:42
sometimes your remotes can lose their coding with the car meaning your remote won't lock / unlock but there is a solution

you need two remotes for this!!

1. Place your first key into the ignition and turn to the second notch (do not start the car)

2. Now close the door and place your second key into the handle lock

3. Turn the key to the lock position and let it spring back to the central position.

4. Hold down the Lock button on your new remote, you may hear a bleep from the car

5. Now unlock the car using the key in the barrel and remove, then take your first key out of the ignition

6. Close the door

7. Your remote should now be coded

Also to change the keys battery this link will help:

Try these if your silver key clip is broken on your fob, You can buy just the cover:

Hello, ive brought a used Key from Ebay with a new blade which im going to get cut, however I do not have any key holes in either doors on my Golf.  Brought the car used and im not sure if its had the mod done for the de-lock, or whether its been like that from new?  My car is a 2000 year X reg VW Golf GTI 1.8 Turbo, 3 door.  Ive heard that you have to use Vagcom connected to the ECU with a usb lead and a laptop in order to program a new keyfob?

Any ideas would be a great help as im not sure how im going to program my new key.

No - this only does the remote function.  The immobiliser side of things needs to be done via VAGCOM / dealer.

If you're only replacing the battery then the immobiliser won't need re-programming; if you've had a new key or the immobiliser chip inside the fob has become damaged then it will need VAGCOM / dealer visit

IIRC - Vagcom cannot do key SKB(??) code retrieval.

I've had a look on mine and it isn't apparent.

I think there is another bit of software (dos based) that is needed to acquire the code for the immobiliser. Alternatively, I have heard that VW keep a record of all codes applied to each vehicle which a UK dealer will get from them.

Correct - you need VAG KOMMANDER or Vag Tacho to retrieve the SKC code from the clocks.  Although the latter is not very reliable on Bosch clocks; VDO clocks tend to be far easier to work with  :undecided:

If you're extremely lucky you'll have the plastic key and tag that came with the car as the tag has your SKC on it  :nerd:

Worked for me - took less than a minute and saved me a few quid i am sure. My car came with two keys one of which had never been used. i used to have a renault card key and had visions of a similar nightmare rebooting the key. No such problems with the VW. Great tip many thanks.

Hi i had this issue my problem is i have no hidden keyhole. My guess is previous owner removed it (dont ask me why) so my question is is there a way without going to dealership and without using a second key? Can i do it through the lock on boot both my spare and main are not working
