Title: Gti_Jamo's White Mk3 Golf Gti....HOME WITH NEW PICS!
Post by: Gti_Jamo on 06 October 2011, 23:18
Hey guys heres a few shots of my recently purchased Mk3 gti 2.0 8v. Will be doing a fair bit to this over the winter months to bring this back from the death.

This is how it looked when I got it, been sitting for 2 years but runs well and drives fine. Only 80,000, full history. Mint interior. Has some rust about it and all four wheel arches are completely shot.

So began the strip down.

So after stripping it down I assessed what it needs I was looking at this list.

Both front wings
Both rear arches
OS Sill
Welding to NS Sill
Welding to rear panel
Some welding to floor at drain plugs
Front crossmember mounting straightened
Radiator
Catalytic converter
All flexi brake pipes

Obviously will be renewing alot of bits but these were just an overview.

Anyway began cutting out rot and welding in new metal. Not welded in over 10 years since I was an apprentice but gave it a bash anyway. (Photo taken mid grinding smooth)

Also had these arrive today.

Got the doors off it and up on axle stands to begin cutting out the OS sill.

Sill gone....

Need to cut the rear arch off and repair a bit of the inner wing before I go any further. Hopefully get a few hours on it tommorow.

Cheers for looking and should have more updates to follow.

Looking at the state of those sills I wonder if it was worth saving.

I would not be refitting the covers thats for sure.

Its only sills and can be easily repaired. Definately worth saving as Mk3's are dropping like flies these days. If everything goes to plan this will be a fine example with no rust when its finished. wont be seeing the road for the next six months anyway so plenty days, evenings and weekends to get it done. Sill covers will be going back on but the metal underneath will be waxed first. Will be hitting it hard next week!!

Fair point but it all depends on what you paid against what it is worth, mk3's are still easy to find, earlier ones seem to be better built.

£235, 80,000 miles, full service history. Engine and box is sweet as is the interior. very well specced too which to me is important. Just has sat off the road for two years. Even came with a £200 set of alloys. Yeah something to do with cheap grade steel on the later ones make them prone to rust but ive gone over the entire body and it pretty solid despite the OS sill and rear arches. Obviously had them plastic arch covers on it at some point.

Arch covers were standard on all GTI's, later VR's they were an option.

I always think they look better without them.

Title: Re: Jamo's Mk3 8v Project
Post by: Gti_Jamo on 11 October 2011, 18:11
Not far to go in terms of welding. Just got the other rear wheel arch to do along with some of the floor drain plug grommets which have begun to rust due to water in the footwells. Not too bad but will do them anyway.

Todays progress, got the sill and wheel arch on and have used fibreglass on the seems. Got it all ready for filler on but noticed I didn't have any left as i had used it all on my dads Spitfire so will pick some up tommorow. It terms of fitting the rear arch all I did was cut out all the rust then cut the repair panel to suit. Used a joggler to create a step for the new panel to sit in and spotwelded it all the way!! Its worked out well and shouldn't be noticable when its painted. Also doors were off and on many times to make sure all the lines are correct.

Wee update, managed to get a couple of hours on the Golf today and got the offside sill and arch finish. Spent alot of time getting it right so it would be very difficult to tell its had the work done. Just brushed on some rust proof primer as protection just now. Think it came out pretty good for someone who has never done this level of bodywork before. What do you think?

Title: Re: Jamo's Mk3 8v Project - REAR ARCHES DONE
Post by: Gti_Jamo on 21 October 2011, 19:45
Spent some time on it this week getting the other wheel arch sorted out. Wasn't as straight forward as the other side as half the inner arch came away with it when removed so had to make some plates up to get it right. Could of easily botched it up but thats not what this project is about. Not yet got into the habit of photographing as i go along but got a few today before I finished it off.

Arch on, fiberglassed, fillered and seam sealered.

Section of the inner wheel arch although it been welded all the way round.

Hed to rebuild the section at the bottom too as that was falling apart. In mk3 tradition, loads of seam sealer. Rock solid now.

Some etching primer brushed on for now for protection.

Well thats pretty much all the welding done. just got a couple of cosmetic bits like de-wiper and de-badge at the rear along with welding up up two of the floor grommets that have began to corrode in drivers footwell. Next up will be the removal of the engine and gearbox along with the subframe and everything else for painting up. This is the bit ive been looking forward too.

I'm gonna be using the 8v (for now) as it runs sweet and has low miles. If any coversion is to be made it will most definately be a VR once its been on the road for a bit. Aye its coming along. Still a fair bit to go yet but at least i'm getting all this rust sorted out.

Nice work fella

Title: Jamo's Mk3 Gti 8v Winter Rebuild Project
Post by: Gti_Jamo on 25 October 2011, 20:51
Finished off some work to the bottom of the OS rear door. All the other doors are mint with no rust bar this one and was affected by it on both sides although no holes.

The seam sealer on the inside that bonds the skin to the door basically came away with a swift tug so ground down all the rust, treated with some killer and a couple of smearing with fibre glass and filler.

Ran a new bead of sealer..

A final rub down and some primer. As you will have seen during my thread I have been just brushing this on many areas ive worked on. It will rub down nice and smooth come proper primer time and saves me masking everything off for now.

Flipped the door over and finished off this side. Again was loads of surface rust so grinded it all down then used my spot blaster to remove what was left. Some fibreglass then filler.

Got a rattle can out for this side....

Another job crossed off the list!!

Cheers mate! Doing the paint job in two stages, hopefully get the engine bay, the door checks on the body and the inside of that repaired door painted soon but the rest wont be done until all the underneath is done and the engine/subframe is all painted up and back in. Basically the exterior paint wont be done until everything else finished. Not doing the roof though as that has quite a good finish on it and no rust spots.

Got some work done on the Golf this afternoon. First of all was to get the front end up in the air and remove the bonnet.

Then removed all the suspension and driveshafts, disconnected the steering column from the rack, removed gear linkage assembly.

Had a bit of an issue with how I was going to remove the lump from the engine bay as the car wouldn't go back far enough so I could hook up the engine hoist to the steel roof beam running the width of the garage. There is a room above in the loft to store parts so drilled some holes up through the floor and ran some rope round a couple of the wooden joists to support the front of the engine while I lowered the subframe down with a huge trolley jack. Worked out well.

And out she comes.....

Then began to strip the engine bay of al its bits. All brake pipes and ABS pump removed. Going to remove the servo tommorow hopefully so I can begin rubbing things down. Sooner I can get all this in primer the better as looking at it now it certainly looks like I have my work cut out.

A fair big job doing this but my biggest concern is putting it all back together but have meticulously took loads of photos as I go along and all parts, nuts and bolts, clips etc have been logged and stored seperately so I know exactly what goes where. Looks like I will be needing quite alot of new parts too in regards to the suspension as it was all seized solid.

Hopefully begin stripping the engine down for paint next week.

Cheers mate, its all pretty simple aslong as you have the right tools to do it. Yeah the garage is spot on although my dad has a fair bit of gear in it which makes it alot smaller than it is.

Cheers, yeah I sometimes wonder what i'm doing but the progress has been good and not spent much on it yet so i'm happy. Subframe bolts came out no bother. Wishbone bolts were a bit tight and the top nuts on the shocks took me ages to get off.

Few more pics of todays progress.

Basically just sanding down and treating the surface rust. Nothing too major. Had already removed all the wax with a heat gun.

As for the backs of the inner wings instead of removing all the seam sealer down to the metal I have removed it where it has lifted due to rust, treated the rust and reapply sealer then will be some stonechip then paint. Will adopt this way when I do the underside.

Cheers mate, keeping an eye on your progress too. Yeah the garage is thee reason I can tackle something like this. Many cars have rolled out of here with a new lease of life. An MG, a Jensen Interceptor, a Mini and me and my dad have been rebuilding a Mk3 Spitfire just now that had lay in a barn for 20 years. The Golf is all my work though. Spent a couple of hours working on the underside today so should have more pics up in next couple of days.

Not been doing much to the Golf this week as been quite busy with other things and the garage is full up so space has been compromised.

The floor pan and inner wings are all ready for some stone chip then will primer them along with the engine bay. Then will be turning my attentions to the engine and running gear.

Spent a couple of hours today on front calipers and carriers. Were covered in flaky rust but will be as good as new once they are painted. Its good to get another laborious job crossed off the list. Much much more to go though.

front calipers and carriers will look lush once they are all done, what colour will they be? what paint are you using on them?

Will probably do them black or silver but not decided yet. I'm thinking Smoothrite will give a good finish along with being durable. Maybe do the hubs and carriers black and calipers silver.

Small update on the progress. Got all the floorpan and the inner wings all stonechipped so just waiting for the next kinda mild day to get some primer over it then hopefully some paint.

The tunnel area underneath the main heat shield had some serious rust needing attacked. Another few years and it would have rotted through. All sorted now though.

Also some wee bits in the bay needing filled and smoothed off.

While waiting on some better weather I have turned my attentions to the engine and running gear and stripped it down nut by nut. Basically will clean everything, paint it, then rebuild it back together. Replacing anything it needs along the way. Need the gaitor that protects the steering knuckle and also the rubber gaitor for the gearbox selector. Broke the top nut on the rear engine mount so will need to get a new one of them and also my power steering pump dosn't feel so good so will change that too. Took loads of photos during the strip down and labelled and filed every single nut and bolt. Doubt yous would appreciate me posting them all so heres a couple of how its looking just now.

Also could anyone confirm to me in the picture below if the pulley on my water pump is indeed knackered. Its more or less a smooth surface when I believe it should be grooved like the alternator and bottom pulley. Maybe someone can check their Mk3 for me .

More updates soon. .

Cheersl!! Not too sure mate, not much you can do to an 8v to make it better. Just want to try and make it look near to brand new under the bonnet. I am open to suggestions though!!

Cheers mate, yeah its shocking the amount of surface rust in the places you don't expect it. The only way to find it is to rip them to bits like this. The underside just seams to be layered in sealer and not much else. Atleast with some paint under there it will protect it better. May be over the top but when I come to move it on I can confidently say its a Mk3 with no rust. The flash on my camara emphasises the rust in my pictures. That rear beam looks like its been underwater for 200 years. The titanic would be in better shape .

Well I though I better update this just in case anyone thinks I have packed it in. Been pretty skint this month so not got as much done as i would like but still feel its on schedule to be finished for March.

Anyway been cleaning parts up, removing rust etc so they will be ready for paint which will be done in January, then its all system go to get this back together. Will be throwing everything it this to get it up to scratch.

Some of the stuff with the blue colour is just rust neutraliser!!

All these parts are all ready for paint.

Anti roll bar done...

Steering rack done.....Need to either source or make the two pipes that feed the rack as they could not be saved. Seen a guy on ebay sells them once in a while so just need to keep my eyes peeled.

Power steering pipes....these were completely riddled with surface rust and took me ages to clean them up. A coat of paint and they will look brand new.

Not really begun on the engine and gearbox as need to get some G101 or something to clean all the muck off it first but like I said been skint so just been doing the stuff that doesn't cost me much. Its good to get all these parts done though.

Well thats probably it for this year. January will hopefully see me begin spending some money on this!!

Have good xmas and new year guys!!

Possibly yes but its extra cost I don't really want to commit too as I have loads to spend on this over the next few months. Like a couple of grand. They don't look so great the now with all the rust neutraliser but believe me when they are painted up and finished they will look great.

Well might consider powder coating the subframe and roll bar as they will be the most susceptible to rusting but all depends on cost. Then obviously I would have to get the rear beam done to match so will wait and see.

Cheers bud!! Just want it ready for then so I can at least use it over the 6 months of decent weather then either put it off the road in september or sell or swap. Get it to shows and events too.

Managed to get a few hours on the golf this week. Decided against powder coating the subframe and anti-roll bar as I couldn't justify the cost given the long list of parts I have yet to buy. Got the subframe,  power steering pipes and some other bits and bobs painted and got all the other aluminium engine parts sprayed in zinc primer ready for a final coat of silver.

Also picked up these 16 x 7.5 Lenso BSX's yesterday. Not ready for wheels yet I know but these came to my attention at bargain basement cost. Thought they would need a refurb but actually just need a clean and a bit of elbow grease and they will look spot on. Need new centres for the caps but can get them new for £40. Tyres are 195/45/16's with a little bit of stretch and all match with plenty tread so i'm happy i have saved myself a wad of cash that can be spent elsewhere on the car.

Really need to speed up the progress in the coming weeks if my deadline is to be met. So far total spend on this is a shade over £600 including the car which is good going so far but reckon I will need to plough another grand into it to get it in top notch condition along with a good set of coilovers but i'm confident its money that can be made back when or if I decide to sell it in the summer.

Got the engine bay, inner wheel arches and floor pan in primer yesterday. Was going to put the top coat on today but its just too cold and didn't want to risk it blooming up.

Also got all the engine parts painted up.

Brake calipers primed. I know i'm missing a carrier, its still on the back of the car. Bolt rounded off but will sort that out when I switch my attentions to the rear.

Painted...

Still got the engine and gearbox to do but will get that done next week. Then it will be time to rebuild. Away to do some online shopping today as need to get some parts bought for it. Going to look for a set of coilovers but not cheap joms but a step or two up from them. Venom seem to have quite a big collection so might get them from there but will look eleswhere first. Don't want to spend anymore than I have too.

Cheers mate, just used normal 2 pac primer which was on the shelf in the garage. Yeah looked at Weitecs but I don't like the green coils on them. Will prob go for AP's. Yeah progress is good but needs to be faster. Still so much to do. Can't argue with that if you got more than you paid. just unfortunate you had to get rid.

Got a break in this cold weather yesterday so got the spray gun out and painted every inch of the front end and the floor pan in alpine white. Turned out pretty well with a nice glossy finish. Went round it today with a wee brush and touched up any areas I couldn't get the gun aimed correctly and it looks mint.

Getting the front end all back together will be huge step closer to finish, then just a matter of doing the same to the rear then paint the body. Probably spent about 3 days or half days on it a week and in between jobs or the odd evening if I can be bothered.

The idea is to lower under bonnet temperatures therefore allowing more colder dense air to enter the intake, thus creating more power. OR simply to protect surrounding electrical components and paintwork from excessive heat damage.

Yeah that included purchase price and the cost of it getting it delivered the 25 miles. Everything I have bought for it is added to the price list, even all the materials used to clean up and paint parts. I reckon another £400 max will cover it thats including taxing and mot.

Cheers mate, never planned it this way it just knda happened . I have removed the heatshield on the down pipe as it had some corrosion and also will be leaving off the tunnel heatshield so my plan is to heat wrap the downpipe and the front half of my stainless. What it is the purpose of the factory metal heat shields?

Keep exhaust temps up? protect the floor pan?

Well the tunnel heatshield's main priority seemed to be attempting to rot out the tunnel but yeah basically its to protect it from heat getting into the cabin.

Going to the dealers today to pick up a few bits so will see if a new one is cheap enough.

Not cutting any corners on this then!...

Will be a very solid car when done.

Not really a fan of MK3's but you obviously are and you seem to be very thorough so far.  Hats off to you.

Cheers mate....To be honest wasn't a huge fan, more of a Mk1 or Mk2 fan but was looking for a project and this came up first. They have grown on me though during this build because the way I see it if your an gti fan and want the old skool look with some modern touches then the Mk3 is the best all rounder. But prob look to do a Mk2 or maybe a raddo next. The Mk3's more of a test run !!

As Shaun says, very thorough job and hats off to you for the job you've done. Problem is with spending so much on this project, you won't make it back. You will more than make up for it in experience and confidence though, so don't be disheartened by that. Raddo next, you know it makes sense!

I'll make back what i have spent easily i would say. Will be after at least 2.5k once its on the road. Its not just about the money its the hard graft that will make it what it is. I know Mk3's don't make much but that because they rust and its difficult to tell how bad until you get right in about it, this one will be 100% rust free. Will prob part ex it for another winter project with plenty monies my way.

Few pics of todays progress.

Fitting the new clip that secures the servo to the brake pedal was an utter ball ache. Still not got it located but i'm hopefull when the brake system is pressurised it will be a matter of pushing the pedal and it will all click into place.

Been going over everything as it begins to go back together. Every nut and bolt cleaned up or replaced and will be coated to prevent future corrosion.

Gearbox painted....

Got a new end cap, flywheel bung and selector rod gaitor from the dealers today so the box will look spot on when its back in. Waiting on my rear mount and clutch coming. Almost have all my parts now. Well besided an OS wing, headlamps, grille and a new battery.

You don't put this much work into a car without expecting a good return. Like I said its not about the parts your buying but rather what you are bolting them on to. At the end of the day it will be a good solid, mechanically sound, low mileage car with most, if not all the servicable parts renewed. Worth 2.5k of anyones money and if not then it will be kept.

Next time (soon hopefully) I do any work on the exhaust I'l ditch the shields as I hate them!

You engine bay looks so lush...bit of a dumb question, are you spraying the whole car white?

So many critics mate, you can pay £750 - £5000 on MK1's and easily the same for MK2's, next to the top is the MK3 so like you say you pay sh!t money you get a pile of sh!te (i know ha) it'll be a mint car so gunna fetch decent money from someone who can see it for what it is. Mite be worth holding on to it for a few years anyway cus that many getting scrapped they will go up in value eventually just may take a while. Bays looking nice and tidy . Whats happening on the inside with interior are you putting standard back in or going for something abit more fancy like recaros, leather? Be ashame to stick normal interior in after all ur efforts, would let it down.

Well for now will just be putting the original interior back in because it is mint but if some recaros or leather come up in the future at a good price I will put them in. Got a set of silver anniversary dial covers and red needles for it already.

Remember a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. There might be no one willing to pay anything more than 1.5k but then again you may get two people who will fight for it.

Good luck when you do come to sell it, i'm sure you will get what you want :afro:

No need for you to worry about it as i'm constantly worrying about the finished article wether or not it will measure up. I doubt I would have taken such a project on knowing how much time and money it would take me as i'm practically brassick now although at least have 99% of my parts and accesories. Just want it finished now but still a fair way off and refuse to rush it as that where corners get cut.

Pretty much got my engine and gearbox ready to go back in the bay. All bolted to the subframe the same way it came out 8 weeks ago. Just got to mount the power steering pipes.

Had the sump and the rocker cover and was surprised how clean it was inside, a nice golden brown and no gunge. Even all the breathers well totally clear. Sign of a well looked after engine.

Quite pleased with it, looks almost original how it came out the factory. Just got to fit the brake pipes in the engine bay then this lump will be getting hoisted back in.

A previous comment got me thinking about interior. Yeah my standard stuff is pristine but its still cloth and a bit bland looking and this build deserves something a bit special so bit the bullet and went and picked up some mint VR6 black leather seats and door cards

Pics to follow soon.

Cheers mate.....seats are mint exept for a small rip at the stiching in the base of the passenger seat. Bout an inch and a half long but will take it to get repaired once its on the road if its cheap enough. Didn't even notice it when I bought them. Only downside is that the rear bench is the one without the headrests but i'm not too fussed about that. Will try sell my old interior and try recoup some money.

Well been working away rebuilding the front end painting and cleaning things up as I go along. Progress has not been too bad. Had the cold the past week or so which has slowed me down a bit but got tore into it today. Here's some pictures anyway.

All the gear selector bushes and linkages replaced....

Front end coming together.....

Idea of how it will sit on the road. Not fitted caliper yet so not sure if they will need spaced out as it is a bit tight behind the rim.

Also shot of the engine 95% hooked up. Will tidy up as much of the wiring and cables as I can.

Thats where its at just now so can at least get it turned round and begin work on the rear. Not to concerned about getting her running anytime soon as want to have the exhaust back on so to bring to my attention any strange noises so that will have to wait til the rear is done.

Anyway i'm away back to bed as I feel rough as a dog

Yeah was a bit rusty up there but luckily no holes to worry about.

Will clean it up and paint it myself. Not wanting to spend too much it now as i'm at about £2k on this build so far. Think thats enough lol. Will be done right, strip it right down and remove the torsion bar. If they come out that is but I assume they do.

Block was done on black hammerite and the gearbox and many other parts are done using smooth silver hammerite mate.

Just a wee update as its been a while. Still waiting on my primer as the courier company are obviously useless and believed my postcode to be part of the highlands so took it back to the supplier as they had not been paid the surcharge. Anyway reordered and hopefully arive near end of the week.

Car is still sitting masked up waiting.....

Been keeping myself busy with other stuff as still plenty needing done. Done some smoothing work on the bumpers. My plan was to buy smooth ones but I have blown my budget to bits so it has to be done. Basically just working my way down the grades of sandpaper until the texture has gone, will fibreglass the swage line then some filler primer.

Still undecided on wether to colour dode the tops of the bupers white of do them pearl black magic to match the roof. Any opinions are welcomed!!

Getting the bonnet ready for primer....

Cleaned up my stainless.....just need to autosol the boxes and tail pipe prior to fitting. Also painted the base area of the tail pipes as the looked pretty poor. You know how they go over time.

Rear heatsheild although still needs work...

Re-painted my calipers and carriers as the finish from the smoothrite was very flat. Used some hammered stuff and is much better and I suspect much more durable.

Painted the centres of the rear discs....luckily all four discs are like new.

And finally have painted the ends of my new flexi pipes to stop them rusting up prematurely. Yes I know...I've taken that too far lol.

Anyway more to follow shortly.

Yeah have done some things before, nothing this size though. Will be minimal filler in it. I think what is most important putting the filler primer on thinly, sanding in between coats. Basically I started at 80 grit and worked my way down to 320. Still abit rough but no texture left on it. Was an utter b!tch of a job doing it by hand. But yeah will need to do a write up on it as there ain't much info out there on how to do it right.

Cheers mate.....all pretty simple for the body...Will be sprayed up alpine white, door checks, inside of doors, hatch etc. Will smooth off the tops of bumpers and side strips and probably spray them white too but might change my mind and do them black. Roofs getting left black as its in good condition as will the rear spoiler. No arches are going on but the sill covers will be.

Had her running today and sounds sweet as a nut, really quiet running engine. Had it right up to temp and no leaks so i'm happy. Hooked up the power steering too and it also sounds and feels really smooth. Glad I sourced that replacement pump now!!

Sounds good man! You might want to consider getting a set of CL side mouldings instead of the GTI counterparts? They look sooo much better without the arches off as well, I cant wait to see this! I have been very temped to repaint my MK3 Alpine White! Also, what are you dong with the number plate plinth? Colour coding to the tailgate or to the roof? And also, I reckon you should ditch the tailgate spoiler! Either that or colour code it white! And maybe colour code the handles to the roof :)

Yeah have been keeping an eye out for a cheap set of side mouldings although I don't have any problems smoothing out my originals if needs be. Plate plinth will go white, had to get another one of those too as my original had the bent bit above the lock!! In two minds about the spoiler but ditching it will mean getting another tailgate without the holes in the glass and not wanting to spend much more on this. At the minute just want to get it done and looking good and on the road and can easily make the relevent changes after that over the summer.

Today I roughly bled the brakes up but will more than likely need to find someone with vagcom to do it right, also trial fitted some 10mm wheel spacers but need longer bolts for the front. Some more pics up tommorow and got a video of cold start up too that will post up.

A couple of pics i took yesterday of the wheels with 10mm spacers. Sits pretty much flush with the arches now and should look pretty mean once lowered down.

Also a short vid of it getting fired up from cold. Not the first time since the engine went back in as that was the day before. Is a bit rough but once its warmed up there is no hesitation when revving. And also no smoke out the rear!!

Next is to get it outside and get all the stour off it then begin bodywork!!

New metal welded in...

Test fitting the rear light I noticed something up with the lines, had a feel in the back of the quarter could feel a dent that had been filled up with filler, was a good job but no good to me so all the filler came out and with a dolly and hammer straightened it out. Still got some work to do with the fitment of the lamp as it just doesn't sit nice and flush like the other side. Want it to be all right with good clean lines.

Also fitted the wings and bonnet so I know the all fit together easy once painted. The passenger wing is not a genuine vw part and seemed to have got bent in transit and needed alot of fettling to get it right. Basicaaly just been working away making sure all panel gaps are as they should be.

Cheers mate!! Yeah leaving the plastic arches off as they ruin the wheel arches with corrosion over time. Look at the beginning of the thread and you will see how bad it was. Side trims and sill trims will be going back on.

I don't want to change it too much though, hate the look of that 'frenchied' boot mod and also want to keep the badges. Even got a brand new golf gti badge for the rear!!

Hope to have it on the road over the summer but certainly not be a daily and prob be too scared to take it out in anything other than scorching hot weather lol.  A show car would be nice but not sure yet will see how it turns out. If I have funds my plan is to supercharge it over next winter and have a Mk3 Golf G60 which should make it quite unique as its not that common as oppose to 1.8t and VR conversions.

Not much of an update really but a few pics. Was hoping to have it primered by now but has needed quite a bit of prep work and had other stuff on.

Done a mock up of the fitment of the front end. New wing I got was bent and needed a bit of panel beating and the other second hand wing I sourced was full of filler where it meets the headlamp so all that had to come out. All hammered and dollied back into shape. The metal skirt for the grille was all twisted also. Need to source the top half of a grille as the plastic is broken.

Prob have them cleaning the garage and fetching hot beverages...!! At least I can say it 100% all my work! Enthusiasts like yourself wouldn't even need to be asked twice to lend a hand!!

Haha, to right! To be fair, I would probably do your head in with all my ideas! And god forbid you listen to me, then the project would never get finished lol! Speaking of ideas, how do you feel about yellow Laminex on the front fogs and the round headlight sections??

It's great to be able to say you have done it all yourself though, I have done all the work on mine my self (apart from the welding) and its great to stand back and look at how have its come :) Just wish I had the garage space to go as in depth as you have! Rest assured, as soon as I do, I'll be buying a little run around and she'll be getting a complete strip down and colour change!

Got a few hours this afternoon to get the body in three coats of primer. Excuse the messy masking, kind of hurried it. All looks good apart from a few issues with the rear arches but at least its all sealed up. Gonna do the doors and some other stuff tomorrow hopefully as had no room in the garage to do it all at the same time.

It does....should just laquer the primer lol. Just be a 2k solid.....canny be ersed with all that laquer malarky  Will colour sand the white smooth though. Try and get it as shiney as possible. Top coat will go on once its all flattened and ready....few wee issues here and there to sort out but nothing major. Had been struggling with that driver side wing as it just don't fit same way as a genuine one but will live with it just now as its beaten me. Can't really notice it unless your looking down the side of the car, the bit where it meets the door near the indicator hole. Last time I buy a panel off Chung Fu Ching Enterprises....Yes thats their real name

Here's some pics, not the best ones i've taken but will hopefully get some better ones outside in the next few days once the rest of the car is painted.

So far have done both sides of the bonnet and tailgate, inside of the doors and the wings and bumpers. Not the best way of doing things but needs must due to limited space and resources.

Quite a few inperfections in the paint but its all getting colour sanded and polished but if worse comes to worse I can always go over any panels again as i've plenty paint. Did have the garage lined with dust sheeting and everything dampened down but think the warm weather didn't help in regards to dust contamination. Just my luck really!!

A few more recent goodies....VR splitter, presses plates and autohaus surrounds and a set of hella blues although not sure if i'll use them yet.

Basically still got the body to paint, outside of doors and a few other bits and bobs like mirror covers, bottom of grille, boot plinth etc and should have them done during the first part of next week.

I did think about putting the cupra engine in it but to be honest i'm kinda bored with the 1.8t after having run one so long. Ideally I want to G60 it sometime but there still alot of cost in that....then there is the VR option  Want some raw old skool power if you know what I mean, the 1.8t is just to smooth lol.

yh that is a lot lol. n yh i reckon mk3 will go up in price over time, i dont have a gti atm on a cl which isnt gunna worth as much, i might drop an abf init tho so id be running a mk3 cl abf

Aye well when I say engine conversion it wont be until I have saved the money which wont be for a while now, i'm far from mint. In fact this golf has scunnered me big time but at least I have spent it on something worth while. I hate having money stting doing nothing, as I just waste it. Saving is a real hard for me. Next winter possibly.

I'd say its all about the condition of the body regardless of what spec it is. I have thought about an ABF too as I do like them engines. But of course, my 8v has more torque ha ha

im the same with money dont worry, ive only got a good set of wheels bcoz i payed for them on my credit card, could never of saved for them . yh thats why i wanna keep the cl, theres no rust atall as theres no plastic arches or sills to worry about i was thinking about an 8v gti engine as donor cars are cheaper and less work then an abf, not sure yet, need to save some money first

Post by: Gti_Jamo on 11 June 2012, 18:03
Few pics of recent stuff i've been doing. Wet sanding and polishing and slowly beginning to rebuild. Not going mental with the wet sanding, cutting a bit of a layer off to get rid of the worst of the orange peel as there is a fair amount of paint correction to be done but plenty time for that after its built up. Few areas of the bonnet need some attention and may paint it again but you can only see it looking across the panel. The good thing with the white its difficult to see any imperfections. I can do all that paint detailing and again with it being white and fresh paint makes it all the easier. All in all i'm very happy with the way things have turned out given where its been done.

Did plan on taking it outside for pics but the battery was stone dead!!

Ok so got the drivers door and tailgate flattened and fitted and got her outside for some pics.

Bonnet has a couple of issues as can still see some of my prep work through it, not sure what happened there but they are really hard to see. Hopefully they will come out with a sanding block but other than that the finish here is superb.

Rear quarters turned out not bad but these are what needs the most attention. Had to flat it back a fair bit and still some scratches visible but will sort that out. the white here is still a bit flat but will come up good. Its really hard to get pics of the flaws.

Some other shots....

Think I will paint the tops of the bumpers again as there is a couple of imperfections in my smoothing job that i'm not happy with but its good enough for now. Also trial fitted the rear lights I have.

I like those ones the best just now so left them in and packed her away for the night!!

Gonna flatten the front bumper and fit that tommorow. Still need to paint my grille and boot plinth and will do them at the weekend.

Just a few pics of what been done....

Fitted my pressed plates and surrounds!!

Fitted the rear spolier, still in the original black. Still unsure on it but will leave it on for now.

Also fitted my doorcards....done a speaker upgrade while I was there....

Also today fitted my number plate lights and put some coolant in it. Also was getting a fault code for the NS front abs sensor so changed it today and now getting a code for the other side. Just gonna leave it for now and get it mot'd. Im hopeful once its gets wee run the abs will sort itself out.

Updates will more or less be daily from now on.

Cheers mate! Looking at the pics now, the rear just dont look right!! Dunno if the plate surround is too much or its that spoiler. Them lights ain't really doing it for me either. Got some cl ones coming though. Sold the blue hellas!! Lowered the back down a bit although its hard to tell as its a slope there.

Yeah there too chavy. I want to drive over there now and rip them off. Well i put the spoiler on cause i thought it would help blend the roof to the rest of the car and match the plastic part off the grille which is also black. But i suspect your right! Needs to be simpler, too much going on at the rear.

I know what you mean, I think its just the fact that the number plate plinth ain't on yet though! As for the lights, maybe red tint film just the indicator lenses, red tint the whole lot, or grey tint the whole lot :) I ran CLs for a bit on my old car, I feel they they look to low spec to be honest!

I'd say the lights don't look right, also the spoiler only really goes well with gti arches

I don't agree with the spoiler only looking right with the gti arches, the later spec VR's have the spoilers black and I think they look great, I think why it looks odd is because the roof is black? I reckon you should maybe colour code the spoiler or ditch it? :)

Interior in just needs a vit of a clean up....

Also had some bother with one of my strut top mounts. Even thought they are new the passenger side one still managed to split for some reason. Have been turning the wheel quite a bit whilst stationary in the garage when fitting wings etc. Anyway got a new one, fitted it but its sits lower than than the one on the driver side. had them both of and compared them and made sure they were fitted correctly but still their is a height difference.

Not much of an update as have been pretty busy the past week. Still waiting to paint my side trims, metal part of front grille and boot plinth. Have fitted my sill covers. Also got another headlamp which turned up all broke so thats three I have now which were all refunded through ebay although none of the sellers wanted them returned. Plus side is I was needing bulbs which I collected from the headlamps and two of them had the electric levellers which I was needing also so at least thats a bonus. Was going to phone vw to see if the plastic  adjusters links can be bought seperately as they look pretty straightforward to fit if I can get them.

Have also sorted my abs so the light goes off as it should was just needing front sensors. Sorted my lumpy running, though I was needing to set up the hall sesnor with vagcom but it was all due to me putting the distributor in incorrectly. Was just a matter if pulling it out and refitting it with the rotor arm lined up with the tdc mark of the dizzy. Runs perfect now and throws no codes.

Refurbished my wiper arms and fitted some aero blades and took my fogs apart and yellowed in plastic bit. Not the normal way to do it but going to tint them out black aswell along with the rest of the lights and should look not bad. Pics are phone pics hence they are abit pish!!

Anyway its definately going for its mot next week sometime, just need to sort the headlamp out and were rolling!!

Well should be on the road next week if all goes to plan and will just be a matter of tinkering with a few things over the summer. Technically I guess it will never be finished, always be a work in progress. Want to get the black A,B and C pillers and get the roof lining retrimmed. Get the curb rash on the Lenzo's sorted!! Source a better NS wing and do some paint correction to some bits! Sort some overspray on the insides of my doors!! Just try and improve it, make it the best i can get it. Need to source some end caps for the sill trims as i have no rear ones. Will prob begin to collect parts for a future G60 conversion!! Unless I see sense anytime soon but cant see that happening

Sorry for the lack of updates but my internet has been down the past week. Anyway the Mk3 went for its MOT today and passed with no advisories and is now legally on the road. Drives really well but have a few problems!! My gearbox is shagged, noisy reverse so will need to source another box for it. Forward gears are all ok, for now anyway. Small coolant leak from the hard line that goes round the front of the engine. Central locking is a bit temparemental but lickily the key still works in the lock. Its running a bit lumpy but think the HT leads are the cause as they don't look in the best of condition and are not a tight fit on the distributor.

Title: Gti_Jamo's Mk3 Golf Gti Winter Project...A NEW ARRIVAL - Mk2 ;)
Post by: Gti_Jamo on 23 July 2012, 18:32
Well like I said was wanting to do something a bit more old skool so have taken delivery of project Mk2 today. First of all a quick pic....

As you can see is 1988 Mk2 Gti 8v, its done close to 200k and been off the road for about 3 years and has the mandatory mouses nest under the rear bench. Looks pretty rough but not as bad as you may think. Sills are mint, as are the rear inner arches and fuel filler. Looks all clean round the windscreen, bottom of the doors are like new, tailgate has little surface rust, floors all sound, strut towers all good, battery tray all good, boot floor in top condition. A bit of corrosion in the bulkhead at the usual place but nothing major

It has no brakes, a blown exhaust, few dents about it, no coolant and running on three cylinders so possible head gasket. All in all i'm happy with it. Was on one of those facebook 'items for sale' pages and was brought to my attention by a friend and was just down the road from me. The guy had bought it without having anywhere to put it so I put 150 notes in his hand for it.

Yeah but grime is better than rot...but seriously you can't go wrong for 150 quid, it needs litterally no welding underneath. My plan is to paint the body and engine bay (same colour) and drop it on some nice wheels. Just keep it minimal and clean. Obviously all new suspension, bushes and brakes. Has a brand new set of rear discs and pads in the boot!! I like the 6 digit reg plate also!!

Cheers mate, yeah its some read! I get all emotional reading it back  things not so clean now after having it on the road past 2 weeks as its all manky already. Enjoy driving it too much to keep it parked up. It is like a new car on the road!!

Just some recent pics after giving it a good clean. Got some trim ends and replacement strip for the sideskirts so its all complete down there now. Still got some we bits and bobs to do like fit my anniversery silver dials and do my headlamps and perhaps some amber front indicators. And get some red tint and laquer on the rears. Also needing a couple of rubber window trims as they have rust bubbles on them. Find a replacment maf as mine's gubbed and currently disconnected. Drives real good on the road and is delivering near on 40mpg but not been driving it hard as have been well looking after it. Thinking about changing the bumpers back to textured plastic tops and some point but not sure yet. Sort everything else out first. Needs a good detailing too.

Maf is buggered, runs so much better with it unplugged so left it that way for now. What you mean about the Mk2 wiper?

A few updated pics of the mk3. Not really had the time to do the stuff I have wanted to do especially in regards to getting some detailing done on the paintwork. All I have done recentyl is joey the headlamps along with yellowing the inboard chamber on them. Turned out pretty awesome I think....

Also fitted some anni silver dial faces on my original clocks and stick some red led's in tha back of it. Not as easy as I thought it would be. Plan is to change all the other illuminations in the car to blue led's.

Basically thats about it for now. Lowered it a bit more and that is as low as it can go without the driveshaft coming in contact with the chassis leg over bumps. Have hit it once but that was a big bump that I didn't notice. Just cruise in it anyway as it attracts dirt like a magnet. Have done over 1500 miles in it already and not had it over 70 on the motorway and can usually average 40-45mpg.

Excuse the pics, not really got the hand of this photography malarky or how to work my camera properly.

Really need some different wheels, or get wider lenzo's for the rear or maybe just some wider spacers. Next step is to get the machine polisher and some G3 over it and get the paint gleaming.

Cheers mate, just the chamber itself, glass is untouched. I used some yellow glass paint (cost me two quid on ebay) and dabbed it on with a sponge. Looked pretty poor when it was first applied but when cured overnight it was spot on. Don't need much of it either. As del boy once said, ''a little dab il do ya''. It gives a nice translucent hammered effect but if you use to much turns out blotchy. Ultimate budget mod, surprised its not done more often.

Not got any close ups on the car yet but this was a tester I done on a spare lense. Gives you an idea of the finish. Also a pic of the stuff I used off ebay. I doubt the expensive tint film will look anywhere near as good as this does to be honest. Gives off a nice yellow beam at night too. My only concern was the effect off the heat of the bulb but its been fine.

Ive just bought this back for a quarter of the price I sold if for. Its wounded though, guy rode it up on a kerb outside a shop and now the engine is either dropped at the gearbox side or risen up on the other side, not sure what has happened. The car itself is still complete the way I sold it and barely turned a wheel. Will get some pics up when i pick it up next week sometime.

No VR goin in it, my VR is in really good nick for its age so would be a shame to break it up despite its high miles. Plus the 8v engine is in real good condition inside and out. This thing will be getting resold once its sorted, but in a more standard form. Wheels and suspension will be replaced with standard stuff. Want to make it more user friendly so it appeals to a wider group of people. The Lenso's and AP coilovers will go on the VR me thinks

Went down to Glasgow yesterday to repair and pick the Golf up, I tell you stepping into this after driving about in my 190k VR6 its like driving a new car, feels totally different.

Anyway this is how she has been sitting since the beginning of november.

Not turned a wheel in three months and only covered about 2300 miles since I sold it but has sat out in the elements so there are a couple of wee bits that need some attention. This was how the engine was sitting.

Rear engine mount had broke, not sure how as it was new, and its also broke part of the front mount, broke a bolt hole lug of the starter motor also. With the engine being angled down at the gearbox side the passenger driveshaft gaitor came in contact with the drop link and unscrewed it out the roll bar.

Done a temporary botch job to get it up the road.

Will rob the front mount bracket and starter off my mk2 engine I removed recently so an easy repair.

Some pics of how she looks.

Not been polished and waxed since I sold it which is ashame.

Need to source some arch liners and one of the top strips on the side skirts has split due to corrosion, a few wee bits on the bodywork needs touched up also. Gonna be putting standard suspension on it and different wheels, either some 15" bbs soltitudes or the 17" wheels thats came with the car originally, standard front lights and then it will be up for sale again pretty cheap. Although my dad has his eye on it.

I know, but what can you do. Its had two owners since I last had it and neither have been dubbers or car people really, they just liked the look of it. Underneath ain't so white anymore but will clean it all up best I can. Will be back up for sale in a week or so.

interesting how the engine mounts etc had broken on this, the exact same thing happened when I crashed my 8v. common weakness?

I think he rode it up on a high kerb doing like 2mph and it just split the rear mount. it was lifted right out the subframe. No damage to the sump or that so it is a bit weird. i think any upwards movement will ruin the mounts as their not designed to be put under that kind of load.

yeah you're probably right.. I must have hit the underneath of the engine then. the block was slanted in the same way as yours.. btw how did you get the block so clean?

Loads of graft and some paint, used air tools with grinding stones.
