And of course there are those rare early UK GTi's that came without them from the factory even the brochure had them pictured.

Yes - think it was some of the early UK spec mk7.5’s GTI’s and GTD’s rather than the mk7 cars that were mis-built without fog lights.

From memory, those owners that complained about it were compensated by VW.

Yeah very early 7.5's where VW UK hadn't defined the spec clear enough to Ze Germans and they arrived minus fogs.
