It's been a busy week so here's my report:

Monday; Today my car got reversed into while parked up. It's only superficial front bumper stuff but I was furious. There wasn't a single mark on that car and it's treated like a baby. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Friday; Today I booked my car in for repairs. I've requested that the bumper be painted OFF the car. They informed me VW charge about £600 to recalibrate the radar (which was knocked off its perch and the crappy plastic bracket broke). Bodyshops like to take the p**s with repairs when insurance companies are involved. It's my first ever insurance claim in 28 years of driving (I think, hard to remember at my age!)

Hella have released the Camera & Sensor Calibration Tool in 2014, which is needed to set cars back up after any damage to the sensing and radar systems.  It makes sense to need this calibrated perfectly after an incident.

VW will be required to have these tools but they aren't only available to VW, and the aftermarket shops can aligned with the same tool, and probably for much less if they purchase the equipment.  Hella call it a "cost effective solution" I guess to stop every bodyshop having to go to a VW approved shop for calibration, but I think its still a 4k investment for the aftermarket bodyshops

Page 9 below has an interesting write up about it

I can understand that these sorts of things need to be calibrated, but I wonder how it's done at the factory, as they simply won't have that sort of time available for thousands of cars a day, hence I assume some kind of pre-calibration/default setting must be in force at build

What a pain in the arse (no pun intended) that is MH. Get yourselves to the docs if the head aches get worse. When I was rear ended (ooh err) in my first car I was fine for two days and then could barely get out of bed!

What a pain in the arse (no pun intended) that is MH. Get yourselves to the docs if the head aches get worse. When I was rear ended (ooh err) in my first car I was fine for two days and then could barely get out of bed!

When my Scirocco was shunted I was sat in it, parked up, waiting for the missus to finish work. I was hit at about 4pm and it wasn't until about 2pm the following day the effects of whiplash started to kick in. Weird how it develops - sleep fine on it overnight then intense neck pain 22 hours later, almost at the flick of a switch. Its a waiting game now to see if anything develops.

My new insurer (Sheilas wheels - only been on the new policy 8 days) doesn't even have an open claim line on a sunday so i'll be making the calls tomorrow. A bit sh!te! The bloke who hit me didn't want to hang around as he had no coolant, he wanted to get home ASAP. He didn't take any of my details, didn't take any pics and barely gave me time to take mine.

Gave me his name, address and number on a piece of paper, then pissed off home, no admission of guilt or apology or even asking if we were ok. As it turns out he only lives a 2 minute walk away from mine (he must have thought I was following him home) as I was driving to mine. I rang him when I got home and he didn't really want me to claim on insurance - I told him mine is probably a £600 - 800 fix if they can straighten the dent in the boot lid - the bumper is a goner and will need a painted replacement, if there is no hidden damage under there, that's without getting his done.

He must've been messing about in his car to hit me, I had been at a standstill for about 5 seconds waiting for a motorbike to pass on a raised roundabout over the A19 near the Tyne tunnel (and it's barriered all around, making you stop to see what's coming, you can't see if it's clear on the approach, and I did a slow approach up the slip road to the roundabout.

Thanks for the sentiment, i'd be more upset about my GTD if I didn't know it was going in March for the R anyway, but it's always a bugger when these things happen, especially when to a small degree a non-fault claim seems to go against you at renewal time (it'll probably add £30-50 to my next renewal May 2015).

Ouuuch. Good old white van man eh Monkey. :( Sorry to hear that buddy. What Isit with everyone running into MK7's lately? Is there a secret conspiracy to get us off the road?

Sometimes I do worry about red cars, maybe the brake lights don't stand out enough, although in this case I was static around 5 seconds before I was hit, and it was a gentle stop on my part, so they had no excuse not to hit me if they were paying full attention to the road ahead.

My Mk6 GTI was a real magnet for unexplained damage. The red rag to a bull syndrome. Front and rear bumpers repainted, bonnet repainted, A-Pillar repainted.

We have 2 identical Blue BMWs in the family. How strange is that? Mine has been relatively unscathed apart from a neighbour revering his motorhome into me which was witnessed with pictures. Damage £2k. The other BMW has been hit 4 times whilst carefully parked. £11k of damage! So the replacement will be a Mineral Grey one. Hopefully that will be left alone.

There are so many bad and careless drivers around. Clueless clots.

Sorry to hear that mate.

Was he drinking? Sounds a bit iffy that he wanted to get away from the scene as fast as possible. The least he could do was apologise considering it was clearly his fault. But then some folk have no manners and don't give a sh!t for others.

Hope you get it sorted asap.

Did you not get your bumpers painted yourself rather than due to 3rd party damage after being paranoid about the number plate recess not being right? Then getting it redone cause it never matched?

Front bumper, 3rd party damage once, my fault once. Rear bumper warranty replacement, then 3rd party damage, then my fault, then 3rd party damage. A well worn backside.
